Apple Tree Yard is a tiny little alleyway in London, and the location of a impulsive moment that becomes a catalyst for the chain of events that unravel in this dark and twisty psychological mystery/court room drama..... Don‘t want to say more, at risk of spoilers!
Apparently this was made into a tv mini series, and though I‘ve not seen it, I imagine it worked well on screen....
A few twists and turns but I didn‘t get overly invested in this.
Missed this on the telly for some reason and only picked up the book because I was away and didn‘t have anything else to read (not on purpose I should add!) but it had me gripped. A really enjoyable read with plenty of twists and turns.
1. Although I haven‘t read the book, I watched this miniseries last weekend and it was quite good. I may have to read her books.
2. Peanut Butter/Vanilla or Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip.
3. Not right now but I plan to include some horror novels soon.
4. I almost never eat out, unless I‘m in a date.
5. Best Thing: My mom finally moved into her new apartment. Worst Thing: Having to move mom into her apartment.

This was a really unique and dark book. It was written in the second person which is super impressive for any author, especially in fiction. The story is about an affair and a crime that unfolds throughout the book. The characters are very believable and fascinating. This was a hard one to put down.
1. I am in bed after a long day at work and wedding planning.
2. I am reading Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty
3. I make a TBR for the month out of ARCs and books that I have had for awhile or want to read right away (I.e. book club books, challenges, movies coming out) kindle and physical books and just grab what‘s next in the stack.

A very good read. No doubt about that. But in the end I really didn‘t like the characters!
The main character, who often I felt very close to ... in the end , she lost me. Parts of her I really could identify with , I kept hoping till the end .... alas , left me feeling there was no resolution ,
#ReadingResolutions #plottwist current audio book. ! Bit of a plot twist happening at the moment. A good read...more than half way now 🍎
Will be starting this new Audible book shortly! A Litsy recommendation 🍏🍎🍎
An afternoon of truffle fries, wine, and carrot-orange-ginger juice to finish Louise Doughty‘s Apple Tree Yard.
Gripping, suspenseful and so very well written. This is one classy literary thriller.
Not a fan overall. It was page-turny sometimes but I wasn‘t too into the central relationship (im not honestly sure who would be?). I know it‘s meant to be morally ambiguous but it wasn‘t really compelling, and I couldn‘t feel anything other than freaked out and disturbed for a lot of it. Quick read at least
Not sure how I feel about this one so far. I haven‘t given it much of a chance yet I admit but the writing feels a bit overwrought and I‘m not sure how much the psychology rings true to me really. Oh well I shouldn‘t judge it this early, lots of books have really turned it around after shaky beginnings before. I never bail on books anyway so I‘ll just be interested in how it develops
February is a good month for a psychological thriller, no? #readingatwork
Mixed feelings about this one. Kept me occupied, even vaguely amused, but I didn't love it & much was meh/borderline wrong with it. Mainly unbelievable, unrelatable, unlikable characters who's actions & motivations were ridiculous/dubious. Was frustrated by how nicely it built tension which peaked, plateau'd and then petered out .... Was all a bit predictable/unbelievable/downright cringey. Twist at end was pointless, weak, added nothing.
This is the kind of book I enjoy - intelligently and well written, yet not too taxing after a day at work! And I‘m always a sucker for a good courtroom drama... Less thriller-ish than I expected but still a page turner. I‘ve not watched the TV series and don‘t think I will now I know the twists and turns.
Hoping for a “brilliant” and “addictive” read as per the cover blurb!
After loving the tv series picked up the book 📚 don't usually like watching the series before reading the book 🤷🏽♀️
A page turner thriller. I really liked it. Gotta see the movie some day. "Louise Doughty's seventh book is a chilling courtroom drama about the downfall of a scientist told with precision and skill" #Sha2016 #DogsofLitsy #morgana
I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, I hadn't watched the tv show before reading and I'm glad of that as I suspect if I had I wouldn't have enjoyed the book so much. I liked the narrator she kept me glued throughout.
Even though I was familiar with the plot from the tv series I found this an addictive read. The second person narrative was a bit hard to get used to at first but I thought the book was really well-written, especially the courtroom scenes and I will definitely look out for other books by this author.
I have not seen the tv series so had nothing to compare to. Overall a book I really enjoyed with a great ending.
Didn't watch the series so let's see what the book is like...
Just finished Apple Tree Yard, which I really enjoyed. Now for a glass of wine and a magazine by the pool since we haven't had sun in days ☀️
In a hotel reading and watching the Weather Channel. Tropical Storm Cindy is totally messing up my work week travel 😡 #roadwarrior #raingoaway
There is no doubt that Doughty is an excellent and teasing story teller, who left me wanting to find out more.
I'm not usually fond of just first person narrative, but Doughty perfectly got the balance between present and past in a suspenseful manner and structure. The court room scenes were gripping, which I wasn't expecting to particularly enjoy. So much more than a courtroom drama or psychological thriller. Unreliable and thought provoking.
I just couldn't get into this one. Perhaps it is because I watched the drama first 🙊. What were your thoughts? X
I read this on holiday in Zanzibar. A compelling, affecting, dark and twisty novel. Now I really want to watch the tv series and see how they did it. It's stayed with me, thinking about the ways in which it dealt with affairs, rape, truth and lies. Very compelling.
I really enjoyed this book and read it in less than a week (bearing in mind how busy my working weeks can be - that is impressive!). I was gripped straight away and, despite the mixed reviews this book has received, I remained hooked throughout! I do feel this genre is often guilty of creating really boring, predictable and underdeveloped characters and that was evident in some respects but the story DEFINITELY makes up for it. So, I recommend!
This is such a sad truth of the world we live in - each girl having to learn to be wary or vigilant around men. To feel at times uncomfortable in their own world and untrusting of other's motives. To take the long route home because it's along a main road or to have to text your friends when you get home after a night out to tell them you are safe. What a world! Sigh.
Made some good progress with this book this weekend! Enjoying it so far - very different from a lot of the books I usually read. Hope you all had a great weekend! 👏🏻
Friday morning, time to get well underway with my new book 📚. Happy Friday all - what are your weekend plans?!
#day2 #17rainbowbooks #orangesorotherfruit This is such a page-turning thriller, with an affair that has devastating consequences and so many secrets and lies.... It starts with a courtroom scene with our main character, a super smart scientist and her mysterious unnamed lover, on trial for murder.... and everything unravels from that moment.... "Relationships are about stories, not truth" .....
Not sure how many stars to give this book. I enjoyed it but at the same time there were bits that I extremely disliked.
Apple Tree Yard
Took me a week to read the first 5 chapters and I very nearly gave up but then........ total switch and finished the rest of the book in 2 days.
Gripping, sometimes for the wrong reasons, and the end leaves you thinking "did she say that or just thought it"
If you need to get straight into a book maybe not for you but an excellent read.
BBC have just serialised the drama based on this book & I've got it saved to watch on holiday.
She has a good job & by chance meets a handsome stranger through work. Married, happily, but the stranger offers a distraction from life. Their "relationship" grows, the woman experiences a tragic event & her and the stranger are embroiled in something they never predicted.
Liked story & reflections on being a woman v man, esp in relat to marriage.
70% through and really enjoying the read. I do like the fact the main character is an older (50+) female.
Couple of quotes so far from this book make me smile 😊🤔. Yep my PhD took that bloody long because, like the character, I was raising my family and studying...#beingamum #manvwoman
