The story is told in alternating chapters between Edie in her 30s and Heather at 16, so the reader hears the story from both characters‘ perspectives and as things happen at each age. I thought this was very suspenseful; it kept me wanting to read to find out what had happened when they were 16, plus what was going on in “current” day and how things were going to turn out. Cont in comments

LibraryCin I did prefer Edie‘s viewpoint, but I think it really made a difference for the suspense to get into Heather‘s head, as well. The end, itself, was a little too open-ended for me. Some things were tied up, but not everything 6y

I keep getting deja vu feelings like I have read this book before but I can‘t put my finger on it exactly. It would have been before litsy (for me) if so.

Apparently, it's in the vein of Gone Girl & Girl in the Train. (I've noticed, why do almost all psychological thrillers have either 'girl'/variant or someone's name in the title?) Anyway, enter here:

As I was reading this, I thought that I would end up marking it a so-so read as I was having a hard time with the characters. Edie just seemed so pathetic and Heather is creepy; it was hard to care about either. Things began to change though as I passed the halfway point. I won't say how as that might spoil the nice surprise ending, but I like that the book was unexpected and had a good couple of twists. A satisfying psychological thriller.

That-Bookish-Hiker I thought the same things about Edie and Heather. Heather's parents really annoyed me as well. 8y
MyNamesParadise I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!! 8y
RadicalReader @Bookgirl what‘s your all time favorite psychological thriller? 7y
See All 6 Comments
Bookgirl @RadicalReader great question! I cant pick a single favorite book as that would be like having a favorite child but for classics I‘m a huge fan of The Haunting of Hill House, Rebecca by Du Maurier, Beloved by Toni Morrison (does magic realism count??) and for more contemporary I like the first 4 books in Tana French‘s Dublin Murder Squad, Bird Box by Josh Malerman, and Dark Matter by Blake Crouch although that‘s really sci-fi thriller 7y
Bookgirl @RadicalReader that opened the floodgates...books that I found flawed but still really enjoyed the psychological thriller element: Night Film, The Basic 8, A Good and Happy Child, The Perfect Stranger, All The Missing Girls, Our Little Secret, In a Dark Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, Sometimes I Lie, Emma in the Night, Final Girls - I‘m noticing a theme...almost everything I listed was written by a woman 🤔🤔 7y
RadicalReader @Bookgirl all the wonderful eerie works love each and every one of them truly incredible how scary books can be 7y

Wow! I just finished this book and wow! I did not expect that twist. This story is about two girls trying to find their place in the world where their parents don't pay much attention to them, so one clings to their friendship, while the other clings to her first love. In the end all I can think about is the argument about nature vs nurture. Would the attention and love from their parents have changed the outcome? This story just blew my mind.

Alfoster Cool! On my kindle to read after NetGalley ones! Yay!👏👏👏 8y

That-Bookish-Hiker @MyNamesParadise I did too! Just recommended it to someone yesterday. 😊 8y
MyNamesParadise @That-Bookish-Hiker I work part time at a library and all the ppl I work with I tell them to recommend it to people that want psychological thrillers or it's similar to gone girl. I wasn't too impressed with girl on a train. Watching Edie gutted me at the end. It was so powerful. 8y
That-Bookish-Hiker @MyNamesParadise I really liked Girl on a Train but after reading Watching Edie I'd say it's so much better than Girl on a Train. When this ended I was like "what?! I need more!" lol 8y
MyNamesParadise @That-Bookish-Hiker the only thing for Girl on a Train did well was have the blackouts be used as a storytelling device. The switch of feelings towards the narrators towards the end for Watching Edie will make me re-read the book in an entirely new way 8y
That-Bookish-Hiker @MyNamesParadise I completely agree with you. That was what I liked the most from Girl on a Train. The twist in Watching Edie was something I was not expecting but when it was revealed my reaction was "what?!" I really want to reread it but I checked it out from the library so I really want to buy my own copy. 8y
MyNamesParadise @That-Bookish-Hiker I'm going to buy my own copy too!! I might not even wait for paperback! I loved it that much! 8y

Listened to this in audio. While I grow weary of thrillers moving from past to present to keep the one event until the end, the change in narrator between the two sections kept it more interesting.

A psych thriller set in London that grabs the reader early on. Edie and Heather were friends in their late teens but, then something happens that keeps them distant for 17 years. Fast forward and Edie, the confident, attractive one is pregnant, alone and a mess when Edie reappears. Heather narrates the chapters about the past, Edie in the present and as the tension builds the reader wonders whose more unstable. An unsettling read.

I've read a lot of suspense/psychological thrillers lately - and not all have been very good. Loved Watching Edie. Edie is a single mother with a newborn. Suffering from postpartum depression, she is finding it hard to get through each day. And then Heather shows up. The history of their friendship is revealed and it's hard to know who is telling the truth and who to trust.

This book is told alternately from Before and After a mysterious incident, with Edie narrating the After and Heather narrating the Before. As the unreliable narrator has been abundant in many psychological thrillers as of late, it only added to my distrust and wariness of both women, which I enjoyed. I love not knowing who to trust and trying to decode and decipher every word that comes out of a characters mouth. Full review on www.novelgossip.com
