If you‘re expecting a hard core multiverse SciFi novel, this isn‘t it. If you want to look deeply at choices and regrets, this may be for you. I liked these families living on a sleepy cul-de-sac in Oregon, and the novel unfolded with quiet beauty.

Ginny and Mark are having trouble in their marriage. As Mark withdraws after seeing an alternate self, Ginny begins an affair. Cass is studying the multiverse but has left school to have a baby. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ Samiera has taken her mother‘s unexpected death hard, and she has to decide whether to stay in Oregon after her father reveals a secret. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen Why does my brain hurt….I can‘t keep track of all those threads 😜 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was interesting with a very subtle reveal. Not terribly hard to keep track of irl. 3y
Ruthiella Yeah, I wanted/expected this to be more hard sci-fi than it was which left me a little disappointed. 3y
Megabooks @Ruthiella once I got over that disappointment I liked it, but yeah, not very SciFi. 3y

The skyline of an Oregon town is dominated by a dormant volcano. Small earthquakes keep happening with odd visions occurring after each one. We follow 3 main groups of characters and see how things are changing in their lives with a touch of magical realism. This is a somewhat quiet book, but I found it engrossing. It makes you think, what if?

Here is my living bingo card for December #bookspinbingo! I‘m very excited by how this one came together. Plus, I used this challenge effectively in October to read down some of my BOTM books, so I have the same goal this month. Let‘s get reading!

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Looks great!! 4y
Librariana I LOVE your live bingo card and OH! OH! I see The Midnight Library!! 😍🥰😍🥰 I meant to add that one to my list, but there's always the freebies! 😁😊💙 4y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana I am literally reading The Midnight Library right now! As in, open in front of me! I‘m almost halfway through and really enjoying it. I have fun doing the living bingo cards. They look so much better than my handwriting. 😆 4y
Librariana How very serendipitous! I love it 😊 I need to get to that one sooner rather than later. There is so much I want to read all the time!! Why aren't I an octopus!? 4y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana And why aren‘t there extra hours in the day just for reading? Really, it would benefit everyone. 4y

Interesting concept, but the storyline moved too slow for the better part of the book in my opinion. Good prose, but not enough exploration of the multiverse.

I don't know. I think the idea of a multiverse is just fascinating, but the characters didn't glimpse as much of these other versions of themselves as I thought. The book worked. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but it wasn't the page-turner I was led to believe.

Current read. I DNF'd this early on a while back but I found myself in the mood for it and checked it out again.

This engaging novel explores the concept of multiverses through four characters in the same neighborhood. I confess one of my attractions to this book is the setting in Oregon. My daughter recently moved there, and I enjoyed the descriptions of the mountains and surrounding areas. I found the characters interesting, if not always sympathetic. The explanation for the phenomenon they experienced was not explained in detail, but I didn‘t mind.

This is a fun, quick read. Honestly, I have to shout out any work of fiction that manages to mention Quine, Kripke, and Plantiga.

Pedrocamacho Honestly, given all of the material on counterfactuals and the multiverse, there should have been a David Lewis mention (see “On the Plurality of Worlds”). 5y

Multiverse what-if stories always interest me and this one is done well. Contemporary realism with a touch of speculative fiction, the aspect of multiple universes, of all of us living multiple lives. How will a #bisexual woman‘s life differ if she chooses a woman instead of a man for a mate? Also, a propulsive plotline: is that volcano in Oregon dormant, or will it erupt like Mount St Helens? #Audiobook expertly narrated by Rebecca Lowman.

merelybookish The writer was in grad school with me. (I didn't really know her.) So Ive been curious about this book! 5y

I devoured this book in a day and loved it for a bunch of little reasons. The author's attention to detail made her characters unique and her decisions near the end were perfection. The setting is the Cascade mountains of Oregon (I grew up in sight of Mt Hood so I know the landscape well) with volcanic/seismic activity causing some parallel reality situations for these intertwining characters. Believe the hype!

Ruthiella Yay! I voted this one for the summer TOB to”make me read it “. Unfortunately it didn‘t make the cut. I love the premise! (edited) 5y
ReadingEnvy @Ruthiella it's a quick read so I recommend combing that longlist (always the best part of the Tob in my opinion) 5y

This is Day‘s first novel. The story centers around the residents of a cul de sac on the edge of a volcano in an Oregon college town. As the neighbors go about their lives—as a new mother, a recent widower and his adult daughter, a professor trying to get funding and his doctor wife and middle school son—they slowly meet each other amid some odd happenings. This book shows potential, the ideas are great but more chaos would have made it stronger.

I thought I was going to love this book based on the premise of parallel universes and the dystopian theme, but it was super slow for me. I took so long for anything to happen and the story just didn‘t come together, in my opinion. I was expecting more excitement from this book and it fell flat for me.

EKonrad Agreed! 6y
LittlePixels Agreed! I was thinking it might be reminiscent of Dark Matter, but it actually felt less sci-fi and more literary fiction. (edited) 5y

Lives are up-ended when the people of Clearing, Oregon glimpse themselves in parallel realities. Obviously if you saw yourself living a different life, you'd wonder about the one you're in now, if you should perhaps be doing something else. Well-balanced blend of literary and speculative fiction, I quickly found myself swept up in the slow-burn drama of these character's lives. Reminded me some of Karen Thompson Walker's THE AGE OF MIRACLES.

This novel just completely missed the mark for me. I was expecting a sci-fi angle or even magical realism. It's set up to make it seem like there might be a parallel universe at play since the main characters start seeing people who aren't really there. However, this concept is never fully drawn out. I was also disappointed with the lack of a true plot. The only exciting things happened after 80% of the book was already done. ⭐️⭐️ #NetGalley

So far, this is not the "propulsive page-turner" I was led to believe. After reading a review, it doesn't look like it ever will be.

Probably I'm going to bail.

Okay, I still have Feelings about A Divided Mind, but I am going to try to move on with "If, Then," which I read is like characters seeing parallel universe versions of themselves?

I am emotional and on the rebound!

Pleasant and well paced, but I think trying to be about many things; grief, new parenthood, yearning, sexuality and the multiverse. Thankfully not all in one character 😄 but ultimately left me with a feeling of that's it?
It's a nice and good after a dark or deep read just don't waste brain power looking for a big message.

Startling, deeply imagined, and compulsively readable, Kate Hope Day‘s debut novel is about the choices we make that shape our lives and determine our destinies—the moments that alter us so profoundly that it feels as if we've entered another reality.
The residents of a sleepy mountain town are rocked by troubling visions of an alternate reality in this dazzling debut...

I stopped reading at 60%. I thought this would be more sci-fi but it reads more like a general fiction book with a sprinkle of sci-fi. Four people in a small town see visions of a parallel universe. They start to question how they are living their lives. The story was a bit mundane and I didn‘t really care why the visions happened or how the books ends. #arc #NetGalley

Do you ever read one of those books where you realize you‘re 80% done and nothing has really even happened? That was this book. There‘s an interesting kernel of an idea here—about multiverses and what happens when they overlap—but it just never goes anywhere, and when it finally does (kind of?) it‘s rushed and winds up feeling very incomplete. There is no depth here whatsoever and when that‘s lacking I expect a good plot. This delivered neither.

Tashreads Oh no! I was looking forward to this one :( 6y

Finished this a few days ago, but t was a busy week!

I‘m giving this a pick, but that is because I‘m going to ignore the marketed summary and just appreciate it for the book that it was. If I considered the summary too much, it left me feeling disappointed. That‘s all I can really say without giving too much away. Full review on Goodreads!
