Kurt Vonnegut: The Last Interview
Kurt Vonnegut: The Last Interview: And Other Conversations | Kurt Vonnegut
12 posts | 6 read | 22 to read
One of the great American iconoclasts holds forth on politics, war, books and writers, and his personal life in a series of conversationsincluding his last published interview. During his long career Kurt Vonnegut won international praise for his novels, plays, and essays. In this new anthology of conversations with Vonnegutwhich collects interviews from throughout his careerwe learn much about what drove Vonnegut to write and how he viewed his work at the end. From Kurt Vonnegut's Last InterviewIs there another book in you, by chance? No. Look, Im 84 years old. Writers of fiction have usually done their best work by the time theyre 45. Chess masters are through when theyre 35, and so are baseball players. There are plenty of other people writing. Let them do it.So whats the old mans game, then?My country is in ruins. So Im a fish in a poisoned fishbowl. Im mostly just heartsick about this. There should have been hope. This should have been a great country. But we are despised all over the world now. I was hoping to build a country and add to its literature. Thats why I served in World War II, and thats why I wrote books. When someone reads one of your books, what would you like them to take from the experience?Well, Id like the guyor the girl, of courseto put the book down and think, This is the greatest man who ever lived.

“But as I say regularly in lectures, you practice an art to make your soul grow, not to make a career, be famous, or be rich.”

"It's an art form for very few people... To stare at horizontal lines of phonetic symbols and Arabic numbers and to be able to put on a show in your head, it requires the reader to perform." [US Airways Magazine, 2007]

This book felt like having a casual conversation with KV. I particularly liked the 1992 Playboy interview with him and Joseph Heller. They were quite funny together and full of insight.

Highly recommend to Vonnegut fans.

AvidReader25 He is my fav! There's a Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library in my city that is awesome. 8y
britt_brooke @Avidreader25 Sounds like a place I need to visit! 8y

🤔👏🏻😆

Laura317 Obviously, Vonnegut wasn't a fan of religion. I find it scary that people think it is perfectly ok to put people who believe a certain way on a reservation. 😱😱😱 If he had said some other group, folks would be all up in arms. 8y
britt_brooke @Laura317 Oh, I agree. I really don't think he was being serious. 8y
OrangeMooseReads 👏 oh Kurt he knew how to get the people talking. 8y

Laura317 The thing that concerns me is that folks will say "oh, so and so is just kidding," when it come to Christians, but if the same is said about other groups, it's taken seriously. In today's world, we really can't jokingly say things like this. #doublestandard 8y
britt_brooke @Laura317 I'm not easily offended by religious criticism. He does not specifically mention Christians in this passage. ? He says "religious fundamentalists." That could be extremists from any religion. 8y
Laura317 @britt_brooke Point taken. 😉I am not offended by religious criticism. Goodness knows I see it all the time in this world. Wonder what group of fundamentalists Vonnegut was referring to, then? 8y
britt_brooke @Laura317 I think he was generalizing. 8y
britt_brooke @Laura317 I appreciate your point and our discussion. 👍🏻 8y
