It‘s probably polite to call this GoldenAge SciFi. In reality, it‘s massively antiquated. Eurocentric men smoke cigarettes & argue aggressively about politics, resources & a pseudo-religion, created to pacify colonies. The 1st female doesn‘t appear until page 183. Planets replace countries & spaceships, aeroplanes to qualify it all as SciFi. Herbert finessed the hell out of these themes 15 years later with Dune. However…I enjoyed it immensely!🚀

TheSpineView I agree but the story is good and well written. 4mo
The_Book_Ninja @TheSpineView It‘s strangely compelling. I look forward to part II 4mo

so far, for dated science fiction, it‘s not terrible…

Foundation describes a story about the last remaining human knowledge being preserved through an age of barbarism and conflict. Hari Seldon, the protagonist of the story, manages this foundation through his ability to predict the future. He carefully crafts his plan to save humanity after the collapse of the galactic empire. To survive this event, they must make a choice; Stand for freedom and risk destruction; or submit to the barbarians.

Mulre2 I would recommend this book to anyone interested in older science fiction novels or that is interested in a well-thought-out story. It is a challenging read but goes extremely in-depth to build up the world that it is set in. This book is great for someone getting into a large series, as it sets the “foundation“ for an extremely large series spanning over ten books. I loved the book, but it may be hard to get into for some. (edited) 13mo
MissYaremcio Oooo It sounds like the Chrysalids in a point! You were just missing the POV and how it is established! 4/6 13mo
Mulre2 @MissYaremcio Could I change my mark by explaining it now? I didn't know we needed the POV. 13mo

I finished this at my work desk this morning. I enjoyed the book - ish. There were certain scenes that I was really into and I kinda adored Hardin. I don't think I loved this book as much as I had hoped though. The characters weren't very diverse or really developed. The beginning parts with Seldon and the beginning of the Foundation seemed a bit weak. I might still continue with this series though. Completed Roll #24 for #Roll100. @PuddleJumper

Bk4 of November & Bk2 of #NovelNovember #33by33 #readathon & the last of #AnyWayYouReadathon is done! Read as an audiobook on Scribd, I came to this as a new Asimov reader and on the back of the series now on AppleTV so I don‘t know if it‘s the narrator or because it‘s so different from the screen adaptation, but I much preferred that🤭I know, gasp shock horror. Maybe if I‘d read this first it would be different? I‘ll try Asimov again though.👇

I like the premise of the Foundation series, but the premise itself causes this book to be like a book of short stories, which isn‘t my favorite. That being said, I‘ll probably read the next one. 😊

Trying to branch into sci-fi more, while I‘m intrigued with the story and where it will go, it wasn‘t as engaging as I wanted it to be, will take a break from the series for awhile and come back once I has finished some of my back log

Took a walk along the seafront today with an audiobook. It was 22°c and blazing sunshine... I could definitely get used to this! 🏖☀️🎧 #IslandLife

Anyway, the review...

It was a fascinating storyline that I'm not sure I've encountered in this way before. Spanning multiple generations it sees the various protagonists carefully navigating political instability across an expansive galactic empire as it crumbles and begins to rebuild, and ⬇️

TCLinrow playing out the 'scientific' prophecy of 'psychohistorian' Hari Seldon. All of the characters, despite their limited timeframe within the story, were fleshed out relatively well with clear personalities and goals. The setting was fantastical and which I think is best describe as 'atomic age goes to space', which is a selling point entirely in itself for its quirkiness. ⬇️ 4y
TCLinrow Overall, a very good, though old fashioned, sci-fi romp in a quirky atomic age setting. 4y
TCLinrow *Disclaimer* While I think of it: From a modern perspective this story would be... difficult for a number of reasons. For example there is no diversity, and the only female character I can remember started just about every conversation with something along the lines of 'If my father knew about this...' rather than casting any thoughts of her own. However, if you bear in mind that this was originally written in the 50's it makes a lot more sense. 4y
