Vostok | Steve Alten

East Antarctica: The coldest, most desolate location on Earth. Two-and-a-half miles below the ice cap is Vostok, a six thousand square mile liquid lake, over a thousand feet deep, left untouched for more than fifteen million years. Now, marine biologist Zachary Wallace and two other scientists aboard a submersible tethered to a laser will journey 13,000 feet beneath the ice into this unexplored realm to discover Mesozoic life forms long believed extinct--and an object of immense power responsible for the evolution of modern man. In this sequel to The Loch and prequel to MEG: Nightstalkers, New York Times bestselling author Steve Alten offers readers a crossover novel that combines characters from two of his most popular series.

TK421 Yes! I liked the first 3rd of this book. The rest was ridiculous! Hot dumpster fire is an accurate description. 6y

What in the heck did I just read?! Steve Alten, I love your MEG books, and The Loch was great, but this really fell flat for me. It started out great, with a good plot and great new creatures to deal with. Then it went WAY off the rails. Aliens, UFO conspiracies, inter-dimensional telepathic communication, string theory, the multiverse, time travel, all smashed together in the end. I enjoy sci-fi, but this was way too messy for my taste.

#MarchIntoThe70s #Day9 #Barracuda
Vostok has went way off the rails into alternate dimensions, aliens, and worst of all lots and lots of math. But before it went all crazy, it was a really entertaining lost world creature book. Like when their small submarine, the barracuda, gets swallowed whole by a giant prehistoric eel.

MayJasper Just to clarify - I meant the book sounds weird, not you! 6y

Each chapter of Vostok begins with a Lewis Carroll quote. I've always liked this one.
The farther I get into this book, the stranger it becomes. I'm really not sure where this is headed.

Ummm.... ya.... uhhhh....... so that happened. I feel like this went off the rails and they just decided to let it crash, but it kept going, it didn‘t crash, it just... kept.... going....

This is hubby's current read, and while he's enjoying it, the errors he's finding are driving him crazy. One historical and one scientific, and both pretty obvious.

zsuzsanna_reads Good for him that he can enjoy it despite the errors! 8y

WTH? Not what I was expecting. Since reading Jurassic Park at 10, books where people get eaten have been my secret guilty pleasure. Not proud of it, but I'll own it. I've read several by this author before, & he usually delivers, but this? What was this? It wasn't completely horrible, but this sequel to The Loch took a very strange turn. As in aliens & parallel dimensions & gov't conspiracies. Not a sequel. Pure Sci-fi. #LitsyAtoZ #LetterV

Bookzombie The Loch sounds good. I also like books and movies where people are eaten. 😁 8y
BookDragonNotWorm @Bookzombie I really liked The Loch and the MEG series, but I feel duped by this one, like the author was capitalizing off the popularity of The Loch to trick people into reading this one. (I'm glad I'm not alone 😀!) 8y

Not the sequel I had been hoping for.... parts were fun, but overall it was disappointing- and clearly Brody didn't approve at all!
