#3books #thatmadememad

🔹️The Torchwood author thought that the members of the team would have no qualms about sacrificing the life of a child with autism. 🤬
🔹️Frances Mayes showed me that she is an insufferable bitch. Fat shaming, whining, just all around snotty behavior throughout.
🔹️The Hannah Swenson was just bad, lazy writing. I am more mad at myself for not being able to quit reading these.

I am back home in Oz. I‘m not tired but I can‘t sleep so I thought I might catch up on some Litsy and drink wine. This is my first book for #BackpackAroundEurope. I started with a book that includes many countries as I wasn‘t 100% sure of my route but going with Heathrow as the starting point now. This picture was taken outside our beautiful friend‘s chalet in the Alps. I really hope to return in winter one day @Miss__astrid @JenP

Miss__astrid What a gorgeous photo! Winter visit has to happen!! Still can‘t believe it all happened. We‘re home too. And I can‘t sleep either 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️😘😘 6y

#backpackaroundeurope @JenP is running a reading challenge. Come join us. This is my current read as I have started in Heathrow and am heading to France even though I am already physically there. Yesterday I was at this pop up bar in an old tobacco factory in Strasbourg. Go now if you have a chance.

Smarkies Have a good trip! 6y

So disappointed in this one. I always loved Frances Mayes' writing, but here she is a gloating, whiny bitch. She is constantly insulting strangers she encounters (not to their faces), describing one young single mum as an "albino hippopotamus" for daring to show her large body in a white bathing suit. One chapter (30 of the 417 pages), where she visits Fez, is the only worth reading. ?

Trashcanman Wow she sounds (at least in this book) like she's an asshole. 7y
Traci1 @Trashcanman so much of the book reminded me of that Mean Girls movie. She and her husband laughing and making fun of the dresses women are wearing and constantly degrading all the "fat people" they encounter. Yet all they do on these excursions is eat and look for restaurants and talk about their last and next meal. She's also very entitled. She has a poetic way of writing, but I'm done with her. She is not a nice person. 7y
Librarybelle I‘ve only read two books by her, including Under the Tuscan Sun, and found both to be dull. I did re-read UTTS a few years ago and liked it marginally better than the first time. One of the few times I liked the movie more than the book. 7y

Traci1 @Librarybelle I enjoyed UTTS, but agree it had it's dull moments. I enjoyed the movie more, but it was so different from the book, it's almost hard to compare them. I think you'd find this one insufferably boring...it had few high points that weren't. 7y
Swe_Eva So disappointing. I was going to read this one since I have seen the UTTS-movie and figured I‘d read something else of hers instead of that one. Nope! Thanks for taking the hit on behalf of the rest of us. She‘s off my list. 7y
Traci1 @Swe_Eva My pleasure 😊 Honestly I'd have quit halfway in were it not for needing a Y book for the LibraryThing Alpha challenge. I should have gone with A Year of Yes instead. 7y

"The women flow in the impossible narrow lanes, a river of color: saffron, burgundy, sage, pistachio, peacock blue threading the crowds, Nile greens and mustard parting, rust, magenta, emerald merging, tomato red, ochre and all the earth colors, the occasional white worn by a woman in mourning."

I haven't loved all of this book, but passages like this remind me of why I love Mayes.

"The urge to travel feels magnetic. Two of my favorite words are linked: departure time. And travel whets the emotions, turns upside down the memory bank, and the golden coins scatter."

?It is a #CruelSummer not having any major travel plans.
I can comfort myself living vicariously through the travels of one of my most favorite lady authors, Francis Mayes. Her words and prose are like pure sunlight to savor.

Warning: if you are like me and periodically suffer from severe dizzying bouts of wanderlust DO NOT read this book. Ms Mayes writing is so descriptive you feel like you're there. I was left desperate to travel to all the places see all the things, and eat all the foods. My dream travel log.
