Embarrassed to admit that I have an ARC of this and still put off reading it for years.

Here's the thing, something in the core story of The Magicians deeply resonates with me. I've read the novels three or four times and I've made my way through the SyFy series at least four times. But I don't actually like the books...? Or I don't know, I have to keep them at a distance. The series is where my heart actually lives, there's just more soul there.

everlocalwest That was not at all a review of Alice's Story, which was fine. I was really hoping for more from this, not just a change in perspective (which is all this is really) but a broader few or really her story of *avoids spoilers* after the thing. 2y

Been using story graph a bit and the stats are pretty cool to look at

Samary I found storygraph at the beginning of the year. I like it so far 4y
CoverToCoverGirl I‘m giving the storygraph a try. Question, if I export my Goodreads library do I loose my library from the Goodreads app? Technologically challenged here but I try. 🙂 (edited) 4y
BookishGirl06 @CoverToCoverGirl I didn‘t import so not sure. Regretting doing that now lol @Samary did you import ? (edited) 4y

Samary @CoverToCoverGirl I did! you won‘t lose your goodreads library. You‘re just downloading a copy and uploading. The directions are in StoryGraph, I didn‘t have any issues! I still use both. 4y
Samary @CoverToCoverGirl it‘s easier to do on a desktop or laptop I believe 4y
CoverToCoverGirl Thank you @bookishgirl06 @samary ! I‘m trying it now... 4y

While I‘m glad I read & own this, it wasn‘t what I expected. It‘s described as “a new chapter in the smash-hit series, The Magicians” — but it‘s not a new chapter. It‘s the same story, told from Alice‘s perspective, with no new revelations or insights. Still, I got the Penny I was missing from the tv show; detailed drawings of magical hand-positions; & a decent, quick recap (if I ever need to jog my memory without rereading the entire series).

monalyisha I‘ll admit it: I gave up on the tv show. I‘m not even sure that I finished the whole first season. I thought the acting was painfully bad. I honestly couldn‘t even understand what the actors were saying, sometimes. And Quentin just reminded me of Dawson (from D‘s Creek) so intensely that it was genuinely laughable. I *loved* the books, though. I loved the idea that you can have magic, untold wonders & worlds, & *still* be unhappy & unfulfilled. 5y
monalyisha I love the emphasis that‘s placed on the importance of making your own meaning. And I love George R.R. Martin‘s assessment of the books (which was what made me pick them up in the first place, before GoT was even a show). He wrote, “The Magicians is to Harry Potter as a shot of Irish whiskey is to a glass of weak tea.” DAMN. 5y
monalyisha Anyway, I guess what I‘m saying is that if you love The Magicians as much as I do (& you know you‘re not getting any new material but are still interested in a graphic novel adaptation), then sure, go ahead & read this. If you haven‘t read The Magicians yet, you should grab the original novel, instead. And don‘t judge a book by its tv show. Please. (edited) 5y

vivastory I've had The Magicians sitting on my shelves, unread, for a couple of years. Will definitely be moving it way up my list now. 5y
monalyisha @vivastory I think a lot of people go into it expecting all of the characters to be likable and...it‘s not that kind of book. But I fell pretty hard for the series. Hope you do, too! 5y
Branwen I've been thinking of reading this trilogy for a long time now, and you've just given me the final push to do so! 😀 Thank you so much, friend! Your glowing review has me even more excited to starting it! 💕 📚 5y
monalyisha Thanks, @Branwen! There are definitely mixed reviews but I‘m clearly in the “pro” camp. 🙌🏻 If you remember, tag me when you review it! I‘d be happy to read your thoughts! 5y
Branwen @monalyisha Absolutely, I'd be happy to! I'm actually thinking of starting it tonight! 😁 I've just finished the first season of the show, and while I thought it was okay, I have a feeling I'm going to like the books a lot more. I didn't really connect with the tv characters (except maybe julia) but I do love the whole 'your favorite book series could be real and you can go there' theme that I'm sure is explored further in the books! 😀💕📚 5y
Avanders Bummer, but good to know! I‘ve had the book for a hot minute, and I‘ve been curious about the tv show... I‘ll be sure to start w the books! 5y

Thank you, to @Avanders , for stepping in to replace my original #jolabokaflodswap flop; and thank you, to @MaleficentBookDragon , for arranging it!

I‘ve already started the (tagged) book & have snacked upon the delicious, chocolate-covered, powdered-sugar-dusted almonds. I even shared with my husband because I‘m *that* good of a person. We just brewed the coffee, & I can‘t wait for it to snow to indulge in the spiced hot chocolate! 💖

monalyisha When I can‘t wait for snow...you know you‘ve rocked my world. 😅 Great job shopping, @Avanders ... & thanks, again! (And as a bonus treat, I got to open this on my birthday! Just perfect. 🎉🧁) (edited) 5y
Avanders Lol yay!! I hope the cocoa is worth the snow ? I‘m glad you liked everything — Happy Jólabókaflód! ♥️♥️ 5y

monalyisha Thanks @dgingo! She loves being called a baby (even though she‘s 7); it makes her feel wonderful & vain. 😉🐰 (edited) 5y
Panic70 What a thoughtful swap gift. Also, I love the bunny photo bomb. 🐰 5y
AlohaAmy Awww cute lil bun-bun 🐰🥰 5y
dgingo @monalyisha My babies are 13-year-old kittens. ☺️😻 5y
MaleficentBookDragon Yay!!! I'm so glad you finally got a 📦. 5y

This is the graphic novelization of the first book in Lev Grossman‘s Magicians series. It differs from the book in that it is told from Alice‘s point of view. We get Alice‘s story from childhood to when she becomes a niffin. The illustrations are pretty good.
I enjoyed this a lot. Alice is my favorite character in the series. Reading this made me pull out my DVDs of the show for a re-watch.

GrilledCheeseSamurai ❤️ The show. A new comic has been announced that takes place after the books/show with a whole new cast of students. 🤘 5y
VioletBramble @GrilledCheeseSamurai I saw that. It‘s being put out by the same publisher that did Alice‘s story. It will have the same illustrator as well. 5y

The magicians books were never my favorite because I don‘t like Q. But I loved the tv show. This graphic novel tells the story from Alice‘s perspective which was cool.

2 🌟 I read the original The Magicians before it was in paperback. I think about this graphic novel the same way i felt about that book: boring!!!!! Maybe I would like the TV show more? Alice is trying to get into the magical university, which she does. Then she gets to skip part of her first year. It just goes nowhere and does nothing for this reader.

Trashcanman Say what? Just watch Rambo and Rambo 2. Pfftttt the hell with that noise.ha! 5y
BillBlume The TV series, what I saw of the first season was much better than the book. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Trashcanman I wont lie, with a new Rambo coming out, I have been tempted to rewatch the entire series. I just haven't had a day where I was sick enough yet. 😁 5y

Trashcanman @LibrarianRyan if you want to get sick I can arrange that. 5y
LibrarianRyan @BillBlume I plan to try the TV show. I caught the first 20 minutes of episode one, and it starts off compleatly different from the book, and I just not really tried to watch it. And Lev is SOOOOOOOO nice. We chose his book for our very first One Summer One Book, and he made a little intro video for our website and everything. It sucks that I didn't like it. It was right up my alley. 5y
TsundokuAleax If you like the books, the TV show has such a similar vibe. They are two different beasts but the writers know these characters and respect who they are on the page. I have not watched recently due to time and not sure about how they ended the last season. That being said, what I watched was a perfect interpretation of these characters and the story to the point that I did not mind all the changes. 5y
wanderinglynn @LibrarianRyan Oh, I‘m so glad I‘m not the only one. I so badly want to like this book because it‘s my genre & I love the premise. But I would read a few sentences or a paragraph & then put it down. I‘m now trying the audiobook. The narrator is good, but I think there‘s just too much detail & not enough movement, so I find myself phasing out. 🙁 5y
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn EXACTLY! If it wasn't something I had to read for work, I would never have finished it. UGHHHHHHHHHH 5y
