The sensational new novel from the million-copy bestselling author of The Miniaturist and The Muse. One winter's afternoon on Hampstead Heath in 1980, Elise Morceau meets Constance Holden and quickly falls under her spell. Connie is bold and alluring, a successful writer whose novel is being turned into a major Hollywood film. Elise follows Connie to LA, a city of strange dreams and swimming pools and late-night gatherings of glamorous people. But whilst Connie thrives on the heat and electricity of this new world where everyone is reaching for the stars and no one is telling the truth, Elise finds herself floundering. When she overhears a conversation at a party that turns everything on its head, Elise makes an impulsive decision that will change her life forever. Three decades later, Rose Simmons is seeking answers about her mother, who disappeared when she was a baby. Having learned that the last person to see her was Constance Holden, a reclusive novelist who withdrew from public life at the peak of her fame, Rose is drawn to the door of Connie's imposing house in search of a confession ... From the million-copy bestselling author of The Miniaturist and The Muse, this is a luminous, powerful and deeply moving novel about secrets and storytelling, motherhood and friendship, and how we lose and find ourselves.

Another four books finished this month and two on the go currently. I really enjoyed three of these and absolutely hated one- Daisy Darker. I think this is the best Louise Penny since no. 1, The Confession was so skillfully written and The Bandit Queens felt like the perfect book for me right now, I really enjoyed the complicated female relationships in a country I rarely read books set in. DD made me angry. Badly written. Terribly plotted.

31/23 What really impressed me about this book was the way Burton captured each character as a unique individual. They felt more separate from each other (less written by the same hand) than many books. It wasn‘t the book I expected but I enjoyed it. I would definitely read more by this author.

Excellent. It was as good as I'd hoped from her previous two.
I seem to really like books that flit between two eras, though the fact that the eighties were described as three decades ago made my head hurt 🤣🤣.
I found both female characters believable and in turns, frustrating and loveable. The other characters were equally understandable and all added to the greatness.
I hope she is writing another novel... ☺☺🤗

An easy read and an interesting story alternating between Rose, whose mother left when she was a baby and has remained a mystery since, and then her mother. The feel of the book wasn‘t at all what I was expecting and there were times it felt a little predictable. I‘m also not a big fan of the back and forth timeline however the the final third completely lifted it and I couldn‘t put it down.

This book was sooo worth reading for the last chapter. The book has made me look at my own life and see the importance of living every day to the fullest. Her writing is soo easy to read and is a true master piece!

Having read both her previous novels and adored them, I thought this was a sure thing. Instead I found it tired, cliched and predictable. The story also, for me rested on an implausible plot element which felt forced so the story would go a certain way. I read through to the end hoping there might be something original in its conclusion. There wasn‘t. Having said all that, Jessie Burton can string a sentence together. @TheAromaofBooks #doublespin

There‘s something do wonderfully comfortable about Jesse Burton‘s writing. It feels like an interesting & highly intelligent friend telling me a story. I loved this story because it takes a unique spin & I HAD to know what happened to Elise. I needed a book that would completely suck me into the story and this did it.

Day 2 of isolation and I have had a good tidy of my room and have taken out the basket's previous contents (dvd's) and made myself a bedside reading basket containing my current bed time reads including my BBC History magazine.

Birdsong28 @Ms_T This is just today's cleaning! going to do more tomorrow and then I will have more room for books and yes it is satisfying 😘 4y

Very unconventional and overtly feminist. Unexpected. Burton doesn't shrink from writing true female characters - ones who are strong and weak in terrible combinations. Motherhood is explored with a searing honesty around sensitive topics such as post natal depression, abortion, miscarriage, conception that I found refreshing. At times it felt as though it could be leading to a thriller type twist, but it's ending is more mature and I was glad.
