Everybody Behaves Badly
Everybody Behaves Badly: The True Story Behind Hemingway's Masterpiece The Sun Also Rises | Lesley M. M. Blume
The making of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, the outsize personalities who inspired it, and the vast changes it wrought on the literary world In the summer of 1925, Ernest Hemingway and a clique of raucous companions traveled to Pamplona, Spain, for the towns infamous running of the bulls. Then, over the next six weeks, he channeled that trips maelstrom of drunken brawls, sexual rivalry, midnight betrayals, and midday hangovers into his groundbreaking novel The Sun Also Rises. This revolutionary work redefined modern literature as much as it did his peers, who would forever after be called the Lost Generation. But the full story of Hemingways legendary rise has remained untold until now. Lesley Blume resurrects the explosive, restless landscape of 1920s Paris and Spain and reveals how Hemingway helped create his own legend. He made himself into a death-courting, bull-fighting aficionado; a hard-drinking, short-fused literary genius; and an expatriate bon vivant. Blumes vivid account reveals the inner circle of the Lost Generation as we have never seen it before, and shows how it still influences what we read and how we think about youth, sex, love, and excess.

Blume tells the story of Hemingways struggles to get his big break and the story behind The Sun Also Rises. What did I learn? Hemingway wasn‘t nearly as creative as I had thought, in this case using the story of a strange bender with friends as the plot for his book. It confirmed than Hemingway was quite honestly an ass. Yet at the same time, I‘m tempted to actually read one of his books for the first time in over twenty years.

I still haven‘t read The Sun Also Rises... I‘ve read and really liked two other Hemingway novels despite myself, since I didn‘t think I liked Hemingway the guy very much.

This book, about Hemingway‘s life at the time he wrote The Sun Also Rises, as well as his relationships with the people he wrote in to that book, is well-written and full of fascinating tidbits.

I‘m sure now I, though: he was a great writer, but I don‘t like the guy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Ruthiella There was so much drinking in The Sun Also Rises, I swear I got a contact hangover. 🥴 4y
mcctrish Have you read The Paris Wife by Paula McLean about his time in Paris when he wrote The Moveable Feast ? I really liked it but I still haven‘t read The Moveable Feast 🤦🏻‍♀️ I agree with you regarding: writer vs man 4y
sprainedbrain @mcctrish I have The Paris Wife! Haven‘t read it yet, but I‘m sure I will read it before I ever get to Moveable Feast. 🤣 4y

sprainedbrain @Ruthiella Ha! Not surprising having read this... are the bullfighting parts really gory? 4y
Ruthiella @sprainedbrain Not as I recall. (edited) 4y
Daisey The Sun Also Rises has been my favorite of Hemingway‘s books so far (and yes, so much drinking), so this sounds interesting. I also want to read The Paris Wife, and I am also sure neither will help improve my opinion of Hemingway as a person. 4y
Scochrane26 I liked Moveable Feast. When I recently finished Z: a novel of Zelda, the author said that Hemingway‘s stories in Moveable Feast about the Fitzgeralds have been proven to be false. I went through a Hemingway phase years ago but not sure if I would still like Sun also Rises now. 4y
Scochrane26 The Paris Wife is really good. None improve opinions of him. Z‘s author portrayed him as a horrible person who hated Zelda. 4y
sprainedbrain @Scochrane26 I have read Z, and it didn‘t help my opinion of Hemingway at all. 😬 4y

Did you know that Hemingway‘s breakthrough novel The Sun Also Rises was edited in part by Fitzgerald? Or that his dementia was perhaps caused by using his head to escape from a plane? There‘s plenty of tidbits about the pre WW2 era when decadence, poverty and war again were in the air in Europe. It‘s a real portrait of the artist as a young man, an arrogant, amorous & adventurous middle-aged man & then an old one who dies not by the sea.

#septemberdanes #FactFiction I love reading about Hem‘s time spent in Paris in the 1920s, his circle of friends, and the trip they made at that time to Pamplona, Spain.... He wrote about this period of his life in fiction and Non fiction works.... ⬆️
The tagged book is great, and I really enjoyed The Paris Wife, but the cover always irritates me! The fashion on the cover seems totally wrong for the era! 🤷‍♀️

jpmcwisemorgan The Goldfinch alone is a fairly hefty book so I can see why the stack would be late! 8y

I love learning about Hemingway's life! He's such a fascinating man. He certainly wasn't perfect, he was human. This book focuses on his relationships and how he portrayed his friends in The Sun Also Rises. Good audiobook too! 🎧🥃✒️ #NonFictionChallenge17

Ernest Hemingway to use his own language was a Son of a Bitch. Imagine going away with a group of friends to an exotic location where no one can know you and you cut lose misbehave and be wild and then having one of your friends writes a classic novel in which you are all barely concealed characters and all of your behaviour is laid bare before the world for generations to come. Hemingway was the friend and the Sun Also Rises is the novel.

Oblomov26 This book tells the story behind the story, the Paris scene, the partying, the infidelity and the damage that the publication of the novel had on those involved. 8y
Desha I agree lol...I read this book a few months ago and could not believe how unkind and self-aggrandizing Hemingway was...it was all about getting his story and whoever was hurt be damned. 😳😠🤔 8y
Gezemice The Paris Wife covers this topic also. Our book club read it and I read The Sun Also Rises after. 8y

Branwen I adore Hemingway ♡ Somehow this book made me love his work even more! He was indeed, quite a son of a bitch...but he was a charming one ;) 8y
Oblomov26 @Branwen my thought as well - for me he strikes me as that brilliant mercurial friend who you know will burn you the moment that it is advantageous for him, but you hang around because he make life more fun more exciting by his presence 8y
Branwen @Oblomov26 EXACTLY!! His personality was so strong and commanding that you can't help but enjoy him! :-) 8y

Centique Hey @branwen just finished this - it was great! A good dose of Hemingway plus insight into all that cast of characters - a real delight. ☺️💕 8y
Branwen @Centique Hooray! I'm so glad you loved it too! Reading about his life and experiences is so intoxicating, isn't it? ♡ Have you read The Paris Wife? It's supposed to be told from Hadley's point of view. I'm toying with the idea of reading it, but I'm afraid it will portray him in a bad light, you know? And I don't think I could bear that! 8y
Centique @branwen I bought that book at a goodwill shop a few weeks ago! But I have such a pile of books I don't think I'll be getting to it for a while. Wish I could get in a time machine and go visit them in this period instead! 😋 8y
Centique @branwen And yes - I know what you mean. So easy for a fictional portrayal to paint him in a very harsh light. 😕 8y
Branwen @Centique Oh YES! Wouldn't that just be the best?!?! I think that's why Midnight in Paris is so incredible. It shows an ordinary guy going back in time and hanging out with his idols! *sighs blissfully* So lucky! ☆ 8y

Look what came in the mail today! ♡ I swear, the more I read about Mr Hemingway the more I love him! ♡♡♡

Centique I have a bit of a crush on him too. (After seeing Midnight in Paris as well as reading about him😍) Then I read a Zelda novel where he was portrayed as really awful! I'll have to read this to get back to where I was! 😂 8y
Branwen @Centique I actually never had heard of Midnight in Paris before you mentioned it. But it looks AMAZING! I just downloaded it and plan on watching it tomorrow night! :-) Thank you for the inspiration! :-) I have been trying to stay away from Zelda books for the same reason! 8y

Day 28 of #SeasonsReadings2016

Today's Audible Daily Deal looked too interesting to pass up, so it became the #LastBookIStacked 😃

The true story of the making of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises - I think I will eventually listen to this while (finally) reading the novel.

This book was great. Book basically gives back story and insight to the true Ernest Hemingway AND we get to see how the manuscript for The Sun Also Rises made him who he is -and made him one of the most famous writers of his time ... and ours. Perfect for the Hemingway fan. Or not. Mesmerizing. Feel like I need to get to Paris. Or Spain. And write!! #ernesthemingway #thesunalsorises

Desha I loved this book...one of my book clubs was reading The Sun Also Rises and I read this as well...👍🏻❤️📚☺️ 8y

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in 1920's American literary culture. It's not as vibrant as A Moveable Feast (and if you love Hemingway the man or the icon, best stay away), but it is a complete picture of the creation of The Sun Also Rises.

Started this today. Though I did not like The Sun Also Rises (I know, I know), I do love reading about the literary culture of 1920s Paris (Hemingway's A Moveable Feast is a particular favorite). Only a couple of chapters in, my hopes are high.

DivineDiana If you haven't read it, you would probably like The Paris Wife. Although it is a novel, it covers the topic of this book from the first wife's perspective. 8y
Susannah @DivineDiana The Paris Wife is on my shelf, and I need to get to it. I'm curious about how the fictional Hadley compares to the nonfictional one. 8y
