This is the second book in the Kingsbridge series. It takes place 200 years after book one and can be read as a stand alone. Though the characters are different the plot similar. Politics, love, jealousy and revenue are the key components of this historical fiction. The characters are exceptional and the prose refined. My only complaint is that it was a bit long and the story dragged in places. Still very good. 4⭐️

#Two4Tuesday Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView 😀

1. Tagged book was my longest last year. I read 38 books that were over 500 pages, but the tagged book was over 1000.

2. I actually at times really want a fat book to get lost in for a few days. 💚

@bthegood wanna play?

And finished. I loved this book just as much as the first. The only complaint I have is I felt that there was way more sexual content than the first. So much so that it felt forced and unnecessary. But, I still loved the journey through several decades in Kingsbridge. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is just as good as the first book in the series! I wish the series could go on for decades! This second volume in the Kingsbridge series takes place in the 14th century and again features the residents of the English city with its magnificent cathedral. This tells the story of a plague that strikes England and how the residents of Kingsbridge deal with it. Just like its predecessor, this novel is a modern masterpiece. Highly recommended.

Just as wonderful the second time around! 💚

Although I do miss the characters from the first book, I love that we see some of their traits in their ancestors. Caris is such a great character in this book, defying conventional norms to do what she feels is right.

The plague felt more realistic to me with the masks and quarantine. 😕

Another engrossing trip to Kingsbridge.

Another stumble into a local op shop, but I only had 30 mins before school pick up to quickly scan the many shelves, I think I got just over halfway. Happy with my finds.
I will save a longer browse, (usually I'm there a minimum of 2 hours) for a day when I have the headspace to stop and relax and the need to feel nourished. These are such special days and I like to stretch them out inbetween and do not ever take them for granted, they are earned.

Bailedbailed

I made it 112 pages in before I stopped.

I didn‘t like the I‘m going to beat this person up just because I can happening twice within about 5 pages. And I also found that I just didn‘t care. I didn‘t care about Kingsbridge Priority and it‘s surrounding areas and I didn‘t care what happened to the purple that lived there at all.

I don‘t typically DNF books so this is definitely a rarity but this one had nothing keeping me in its world.

I will put a spoiler in the comments to this post because there is one thing in this book that I really don‘t understand.

So, anyone who read it, please peek and explain its relevance to me if you can. Thank you‼️🙇🏽‍♀️

Buechersuechtling So, here‘s what I don‘t understand: The relevance of the letter Thomas/Merthin buried in the woods. It says, what everyone else assumed anyway, namely that Isabella killed her husband Edward II. or at least gave order to do so. If everyone knows anyway, where please is the relevance for Edward III. It‘s 34 years later and his father and his mother are both dead by now anyway❓🤔 4y

Bailedbailed

Never thought so, but I need to bail on this Ken Follett book. Sorry, not sorry. From about page 600 on the story felt kind of dragging and boring. Like Follett wanted to still put more and more and more information in without really developing his plot. Maybe it‘s because I just read “Kingsbridge” but I found many of the plot lines similar and interchangeable. The story just didn‘t hold my interest anymore.

Part Five
March 1346 to December 1348.

Foreshadowing on some blood-shedding if I interpret this illustration right.

I‘m at a bit more than 50 % now and am a bit in doubt. The last about 150 pages felt different than the rest. Not so grasping. More like Follet wanted to also put this … and this … and this … and also this topic into the plot as well.

Part Four
June 1338 to Mai 1339

At the end of the last chapter on of the protagonists had an abortion. She wanted it. She‘s a modern woman longing to be independent in what was even more a men‘s world then then today …

But this scene really moved me. Always reminds me that I never want to be confronted with that decision. I feel, it‘s one of those you l#always feel bad about no matter how intense you ponder over it or discuss it. 🥺

Borrowed from friend. We started talking about “Kingsbridge” being the prequel to “Pillars” and I said that I didn‘t know “Pillars” is no standalone. She said, she owns volume 2 and could lend it to me. I asked, if it is the book where in the beginning the bridge falls apart because I remember to have often started but never finished it because of, you know, life coming in between. She wasn‘t quite sure.
But there you go: The bridge falling apart.
