Untamed Shore | Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Silvia Moreno-Garcia's first thriller, set in Mexico in the 1970's about a film-obsessed young Mexican woman who becomes infatuated with three American tourists who come to her sleepy seaside town, but when she lies to cover up a possible homicide she is caught in a chilling web of deceit and betrayal.

This dark noirish thriller set in Baja California in the 80s follows 18-year-old Viridiana, who has a gift for languages and a longing to leave her small, conservative town behind. When she is hired by a wealthy American tourist for the summer, she finds herself entwined in a plot worthy of the old movies she loves. Tense, atmospheric and unpredictable, this was a unique and violent coming of age story, with sharks of all kinds.

I‘m rating this so-so with the caveat that it might be my mood.

It reminded me a little of a Patricia Highsmith book, but I just never got into the story.

I‘m glad I read Untamed Shore, but it‘s a bit like watching a train wreck and not being able to do anything to help. Beautifully paced, like one of the swimming sharks that appear in this story. We learn of Viridiana‘s involvement with two terrible grifters and her subsequent fall from her tenuous grasp on the bit of grace offered by her small town in Baja. I rooted for her, until I couldn‘t, but I won‘t soon forget her and I wish Viridiana well.

I don‘t know how I feel about the main character of this book. The book is by the same author that wrote Mexican Gothic, though this book wasn‘t as good, but still pretty good. In her hometown of Baja California, eighteen year old Viridiana starts working for 3 Americans, but soon learns they aren‘t who they say they are. I want to like Viridiana…but she seems too selfish but then, I know she doesn‘t have the best life. It makes me wonder ….

Reggie I really liked this book. I loved Viridiana and the fact that she was smart enough to use the politics and small mindedness of a small town to carve out a future and solution for herself. 3y
Asthecroweflies @Reggie true. I just don‘t know how to feel about her manipulating Lawrence like she did. On one hand, her experiences with her father running off from her mother and men using women shapes her perspective and she doesn‘t get any guidance or support from her mother. But then, Lawrence was a genuine guy… 3y
Asthecroweflies @Reggie I guess this inner debate I‘m having is proof of Silvia‘s writing talents. lol. She does a wonderful job of conveying Viridiana‘s youth, naivety, restlessness, and dreams of experiencing life (such as on the movie screen). But Viridiana is older than her years in some ways as well. It‘s refreshing to see such a dynamic character in novels. Especially these days when many books are so stereotypical/mainstream.. 3y

A historical thriller set in Baja California in the 70s. When Viridiana agrees to do translation work for a group of tourists and one of them ends up dead she becomes caught up in a web of deception beyond her wildest imagining. An entertaining read with lots of twists and turns.

Viridiana lives in Baja California (which is in Mexico, I share this because I did not understand it) in 1979 but she's bored and is resisting all attempts by her mother to settle down with a local. Three Americans come to town and hire her as an assistant because she speaks multiple languages. Life gets more exciting but also more dangerous. ↘️

ReadingEnvy Silvia Moreno-Garcia is such a prolific author and she seems to be trying out different genres and almost always basing her novels in Mexico. This plays with the psychological thriller but it's almost a spoiler to say so because the novel doesn't feel that way at first. I wouldn't say this is my favorite from the author but enjoyed a setting and time period I hadn't experienced before. 3y
Ruthiella Coming from Southern California, I knew that BC is part of Mexico. But we all have those holes in our knowledge. Like I didn‘t understand that Neanderthal was a PLACE and the species of early man named after the place they were discovered! 😆 (edited) 3y

I‘ve recently become enamoured with Silvia Moreno-Garcia‘s works and I‘m so sad I didn‘t discover her sooner because it looks like most of her backlist is out of print?? I‘m just a few chapters into this one but I already know I‘m going to love it. If anyone knows where I can find physical copies of her older books please let me know!!

This is as untamed and as shore-like as I get right now, and so this book was perfect 🤣
I love Moreno-Garcia's ability to construct settings, and the Baja California desert is so perfectly still in this quick little thriller. I could feel the sun baking down on me, and it was wonderful (see photo, again, for further information). The author captures parts of Mexico that are rarely seen, and makes them so real. I love it.

I really, really, liked this. It‘s the 1970s and Viridiana is a girl living in a small town in Baja. She takes a job helping out 3 Americans who come to vacation for the summer. One ends up dead. There‘s writing in here that volleys back and forth between dialogue and metaphor that had me smiling so big as I read about the many layers of Viridiana‘s coming of age in this noir. Pick!!!

KVanRead “wandered into the dark streets of a noir” what a great quote. 4y

Reggie @Nute 😊thanks, but honestly your reviews, those soft and wonderful things make me feel like I don‘t really read books. Lol. They‘re awesome. Check this book out. It has a girl from a small town with dreams bigger than that town. And does she try to make them come true with the guy we all know is wrong for her or does she figure it out herself? It‘s sooooooo good. 4y

LibrarianBanana @Reggie true, I'm listening to Mexican Gothic and it took me a few chapters to find her style again. My first one of hers was Gods of Jade and Shadow so every line of hers refers back to that for me. 4y
Reggie @LibrarianBanana I read Signal to Noise which I loved and cried in even though I really disliked the main character. Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Untamed Shore is both a compelling coming of age narrative and a suspenseful noir thriller. It's 1979, Baja California. Viridiana is fighting the expectations of her mother, who wants her to marry to get her out of the house and to forge a business partnership with her ex-boyfriend's parents. Viridiana, however, has no plans to marry her ex. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Instead, she takes a job for the summer as an assistant and translator to a family of tourists. As part of the job, she lives in the summer home of the man, Ambrose; his beautiful wife Daisy; and Daisy's gorgeous brother Gregory.⠀

Viridiana is happy to escape her mother's control and to dream about her future. She had befriended a local man who nurtured her brilliance, ⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod helping her to become multilingual and teaching her about the opportunities available outside of her small town, where everyone knows--and whispers about--everything she does.⠀

Watching Viridiana become entangled in the machinations of Ambrose, Daisy, and Gregory, watching her become infatuated with Gregory and with being more like Daisy, I had a growing sense of dread. ⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod Viridiana is trapped by circumstance, by the lack of support from her mother, and by the prejudices of her small town. She's so tempted by the possibility that seems to surround the visitors that it's not hard to imagine all the ways she could be drawn into poor decisions. Then, when one of the tourists dies, Viridiana is pulled in to the suspicion of officials in her town and the conspiracies of those left behind. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod Moreno-Garcia is a master at building atmosphere, at a gradual acceleration of suspicion and desperation that takes over. I was totally entranced--and worried--watching brilliant Viridiana wrestle with her expectations for herself, the obstacles she faces as a woman in her small, 1970s town, and the dreams she worries she may have to sacrifice. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod Adding in this disruptive outside force is the catalyst for forcing her to act to regain control of her future. What a complex character and what a brilliant, edge-of-my-seat novel.

Do you focus more on plot, on atmosphere, or on character when you read? Do you think you weigh one more heavily than the others?

A pitch perfect noir thriller that follows a well-known formula but does it so thoroughly and so well, it doesn‘t detract from the reading experience. Moreno-Garcia‘s writing is wonderful, evocative & cinematic in scope—at times reading the book felt like I had stepped into a classic black and white movie. Loved the time and place, hated the main character—really, really hated the main character but I kept reading, surely the sign of a good book.

A bit different from other novels by Moreno-Garcia, her successful foray into the suspense/thriller genre. Taking place in a small shore town in Mexico during the 1970s, the scene is sets really well right from the start. Things quicky spiral out of control for main character, Vividiana. Enjoyable, engrossing, & nerve-racking!

Thanks, #NetGalley!! Being a shark lover, this cover drew me right in to this #OwnVoices coming-of-age tale. It‘s marketed as a thriller and while I must admit that all of my guesses about the plot turned out to be right, the stellar 1979 Baja California setting makes this feel fresh and really wonderful. I wish there had been more live sharks, but it‘s a satisfying read. Viridiana makes for a great heroine who comes into her own in this one!
