Brontes: Wild Genius on the Moors: The Story of a Literary Family
Brontes: Wild Genius on the Moors: The Story of a Literary Family | Juliet Barker
The story of the tragic Bronte family is familiar to everyone: we all know about the half-mad, repressive father, the drunken, drug-addled wastrel of a brother, wildly romantic Emily, unrequited Anne, and poor Charlotte. Or do we? These stereotypes of the popular imagination are precisely that - imaginary - created by amateur biographers such as Mrs. Gaskell who were primarily novelists and were attracted by the tale of an apparently doomed family of genius. Juliet Barker''s landmark book is the first definitive history of the Brontes. It demolishes the myths, yet provides startling new information that is just as compelling - but true. Based on first-hand research among all the Bronte manuscripts, including contemporary historical documents never before used by Bronte biographers, this book is both scholarly and compulsively readable. The Brontes is a revolutionary picture of the world''s favorite literary family.

Branwell, Charlotte, Emily, & Anne Brontë all had to move back in with their father as adults because they couldn't get/keep permanent employment. THE O.G. MILLENNIALS.

I'm an apathetic agnostic (don't know, don't care), but poor Patrick...I kind of *have* to hope there's a lovely afterlife, if just for this one guy.

(For those unfamiliar, Patrick Brontë was the father of *deep breath* Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Branwell, Emily, & Anne Brontë. He outlived his wife & all his children.)

The Bronts: A Life in Letters | Juliet R. V. Barker

Charlotte Bronte disses Jane Austen in a letter to George Henry Lewes (critic and partner of George Eliot). ?

"These observations will probably irritate you, but I shall run the risk" = my new Litsy tag line. ??

LeahBergen @shawnmooney You may need to preface your "bails" with this line, too. ? 8y
batsy That's a great line! Anyway, I love thinking about this. "Was Bronte right about Austen?" is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night ? 8y

ScorpioBookDreams Would you be able to do me a favour, please? I'd like the preorder goodies for When Dimple Met Rishi but they are only available in the US/Canada. Any chance you'd be willing to receive them and post them on? Don't worry if you can't though! Xxx 8y
drokka Le plus ça change, le plus ça reste le même. Im not sure glad is the right word, maybe interesting is better. I find interesting the writer jealousies have always existed. It's kind of nice to see how authors we sort of group together today, were far from viewing each other as equals in œuvre. 8y
readinginthedark There are a lot of good authors who underestimate Austen; it's pretty interesting. Virginia Woolf wrote a critique of her work, and a lot of what Woolf writes accomplishes similar things for the reader! But her writing style is completely different, and someone almost always dies. 8y
LeahBergen @ScorpioBookDreams Sure! I sent you a message on Goodreads. 8y
LeahBergen @batsy Right? And then I was thinking, "what would Austen think of Jane Eyre?!" ? 8y
LeahBergen @shawnmooney Yes!! 👏🏻👏🏻 8y
LeahBergen @tpixie Haha! Yes! 8y
LeahBergen @drokka It's fascinating, isn't it? 8y
andrew61 That is a wonderful quote. 8y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen @batsy She might consider it something Catherine Morland would enjoy. 😄 8y
Hobbinol I love that! Good one! 8y
tpixie @drokka c'est vrai! 8y
batsy @rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen They're so stylistically different it's fun to think about ☺️ Austen would have prob delivered a delicious backhanded compliment! 8y
LeahBergen @batsy Austen would have put her in one of her novels as one of her frumpy, hypochondriac comic characters. 😄 8y
batsy @LeahBergen Oh yes! 💚 8y

#WCW The Brontë Sisters painted by their brother Bramwell (who included himself then painted that out leaving but a ghostly outline) have been on my walls since I picked up the poster at an exhibit in New York in the late 90's, so ya, I guess you could say I'm a bit of a fan girl : @BookishFeminist

ValerieAndBooks @KVanRead Interesting story! Seems like the poor guy was both literally and figuratively overshadowed. 8y
KVanRead @ValerieAndBooks yes, I think that's one of the things I like most about the picture. 8y
tpixie @KVanRead @ValerieAndBooks love the story behind the painting! Makes the painting special! 8y
