Chief Inspector Alan Banks moved away from London to the quaint village of Eastvale to find some peace, but trouble can be found in a village as well as in the city. Soon Banks must contend with a Peeping Tom, a group of thieving young thugs, and the brutal murder of an elderly woman in her home. A growing friendship with psychologist Jenny Fuller and tension with wife Sandra complicate matters, particularly when Jenny and Bankss family are threatened. Ultimately, as the story builds to a surprising and terrifying climax, Banks must make some hard decisions. First in the critically acclaimed Inspector Banks Mystery Series.

My first Inspector Banks book and I have to say I‘m a fan. While it was written many years ago now - leading to some outdated scenes (smoking in an office!) - it still contained some frank and interesting observations about changing views and gender roles, marriage, sexuality and policing - all while covering three interesting and entertaining mysteries. Definitely going to be back for more!

Bk3 of May is finished. I did decide to go back and reread the DCI Banks series, all 28 of them! This is bk1, written in 1987 it‘s a bit dated of course(telephone boxes, cassette tapes & questionable fashion😋)but the story still stands up. Banks is new in Eastvale, a town in the Yorkshire Dales, when 3 things happen, breakins by two teens, a peeping Tom & the murder of an old woman. Working as an incomer creates some challenges. #SeriesLove2024👇

Andrew65 This is something I‘d like to do as well. A wonderful series. 7mo
Lizpixie @Andrew65 have you read the last book? It ends so abruptly I wondered if he hadn‘t finished the final draft before he died. It‘s so sad to know there‘ll be no more Banks, Annie, Winsome & Gerry. How are you and the missus? You‘re just starting the warm weather while I‘m freezing my butt off & drowning in rain! 7mo

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView Thanks for the tag!

1. Peter Robinson‘s DCI Banks series always references music and books that make me nostalgic.

2. I prefer reading books that are set in the USA.

Can you play? @Elizabeth2 @Nute @magyklyXdelish @suvata @Jadams1776 @MaleficentBookDragon

My October #BookSpinBingo wrap up! Five books read; not great, not terrible. No bingoes, and I didn‘t get to the Doublespin. Started it yesterday, but it didn‘t grab me, and was depressing, so I‘ll read it at another time. At this time and place, depressing is NOT what I‘m in the mood for. I remembered to say White Rabbits this morning though! 🤞 🐇

Looking forward to tomorrow‘s numbers!

Day 6 #Top20series #20series20days Ah, Alan Banks. He really grows on you. A series that keeps on getting better. The first few in the series are OK/good, but after that 👍🏽 I love sitting down reading this series. It takes me to the Yorkshire Dales, and I most definitely feel I‘m there!

Andrew65 A great series and I agree it takes a few to find its feet. The recent book I read from NetGalley was also good for the feeling of the Yorkshire Dales. I intend reading the rest of the series. (edited) 4y
Nute It doesn‘t get any better than being pulled into a particular setting while reading especially if it‘s misty and atmospheric. The cover photos seem to be setting the mood. 4y

Andrew65 @Crazeedi Yes I need to start that one. I certainly recommend The Rebus Series by Ian Rankin, I love the writing style and Rebus is a great character. (edited) 6y
Leftcoastzen Wow , didn‘t know Rankin had so many. 6y
Andrew65 @Leftcoastzen It is surprising. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Stephen Booth has 18 books but his taking a break from his series - he just tweeted this message: 6y
EadieB For those of you asking - yes, my next book does fall into the category of Historical Psychological Thriller! The history theme runs all the way from the 18th century through Victorian times to the Second World War and the 1990s. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Interesting! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Peter James is now up to 15. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Wow! I‘ve only read the 1st one of Peter James‘ books. Gotta get moving! Hope your mouth is doing better! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I love that series, possibly more than Banks. 6y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I will definitely check out this series! Thanks for recommending! 6y
Cinfhen That‘s dedication!!!! 6y
gradcat Omigod Andrew...you make me feel so guilty (and jealous, if I‘m honest)! I read a lot of series, but I think you have me beat by far!! 😩 Oh, and just by the by—I‘ve never read any Hamish Macbeth books—are they light or dark? 🤔 (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen I like working through my series, I am up to date on two of these series and mid series in two others. Now waiting for 2 books published on 16th May fir my up to date series. 6y
Andrew65 @gradcat if anything I have far too many series on the go! Hamish MacBeth are light, quick and humorous reads. Very quirky. I read these in just over half the time of the normal books I read. 6y
gradcat Oh, thanks very much for answering! You‘re the best! 😊 6y
Andrew65 @gradcat 😊👍Will always share my thoughts. 6y

Mehso-so

The first of the Inspector Banks books, and while it deals with some feminist issues, is a bit dated now. While I enjoyed it as a procedural, there were a couple of issues at the end around Banks‘ and Jenny Fuller‘s involvement in the cases that left me wondering if it would occur that way in real life

I should have gone with the Litsy reviews on this one: cringe-inducing misogyny & eroticized sexual violence against women. Interestingly enough I'm reading Ian Rankin's 1st Rebus book alongside this, both being published in 1987, both hard boiled British detective novels with similar subject matter. Yet there is little comparison to be made with authorial sexist insensitivity.

Sorry DCI Banks; I'll be sticking with DI Rebus.

My $2 book haul from the Friends of the Library in Kihei, HI! Thank you for the advice, @DebinHawaii We made it to Lahaina but it was so windy. We had lunch and came back to our side of the island. But managed to find the library right by where we were staying 30 mins before closing! My kind of souvenirs!

rabbitprincess Interesting cover on the Peter Robinson! 8y
EvieBee @rabbitprincess rightI? The back flap says it's the Canadian Penguin crime edition. 8y
DebinHawaii Sorry Lahaina wasn't better. It's a windy weekend on Oahu too 😬 but I'm happy that you found a couple of good books as souvenirs! 📚🌺👍 8y
EvieBee @DebinHawaii It was still beautiful! We had to head back earlier than expected because we discovered our rental car had ton of ants. So by the time we set it right we had time to hit the library on our side of the island. But we are going back tomorrow to do it right! ☺️❤️❤️❤️ 8y

Nope. Too misogynistic for my taste. I've heard such great things about the Inspector Banks series that I may try a (much) later book in the future. But, this one, written in 1988, was just too much for me to take. 🙁

Heard good things about the Inspector Banks series. Kicking off the weekend with the first book of the series. And, it's got a map! Love maps in books 😃

Andrew65 I love this series, have read them all and now waiting for the latest to be published. They only get better from this point onwards. 8y
Daisydo Maps are the best! 8y
JulieAnn I love this series! I did get a bit lost after awhile because there are so many but the books are really good. There's a tv show based on them as well. DCI Banks on Hulu. It starts with one of the later novels though. Happy Reading! 8y

Lizpixie Can't recommend them enough! I got started with Aftermath which blew me away so I went back and now have the whole series. There's a new one coming out in July I believe.👍 8y

The first book in the Inspector Banks series and fortunately not the first one I read. Dated attitudes toward women, gratuitous titillation, and little reason to care whodunnit. Don't start with this one.

LauraBrook Thanks for taking a hit for the rest of us, rp! It's a non-BB! 😉 9y
rabbitprincess There are better instalments in the series, e.g. Piece of My Heart. 9y
rabbitprincess And on the plus side I am giggling over the cute little parachuting book icon. Makes bailing on a book more fun. 9y
