Moby-Duck
Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea & of the Beachcombers, Oceanograp hers, Environmentalists & Fools Including the Author Who Went in Search of Them | Donovan Hohn
Selected by The New York Times Book Review as a Notable Book of the Year A revelatory tale of science, adventure, and modern myth. When the writer Donovan Hohn heard of the mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science and geography. But questions can be like ocean currents: wade in too far, and they carry you away. Hohn's accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive world of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories. Moby-Duck is a journey into the heart of the sea and an adventure through science, myth, the global economy, and some of the worst weather imaginable. With each new discovery, Hohn learns of another loose thread, and with each successive chase, he comes closer to understanding where his castaway quarry comes from and where it goes. In the grand tradition of Tony Horwitz and David Quammen, Moby-Duck is a compulsively readable narrative of whimsy and curiosity.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Finished listening to this #Nonfiction #audiobook about rubber ducks.
But, honestly, it's so much more than the hunt for a shipment of lost children's toys. Hohn shares his journey across the world exploring how interconnected the world is and how durable our trash really is.
This book is a marathon and requires endurance to make it through but IMO the length is worth it.

Not sure why this #audiobook is rated so low 🤔
Regardless, I'm excited to begin this #Nonfiction adventure and finally move this book from my #TBR stack.

I thoroughly enjoyed this romp through the oceans, chasing the elusive The First Years‘ bath toys that went overboard in the early 90‘s. I‘ll never look at the ocean or a “made in China” label the same again.

I‘m loving all the literary references in this. Hohn taught high school English, and it shows. 😀

Nute I couldn‘t wait to read what this book is about after reading the title. I want to read this now! 4y
Lcsmcat @Nute I heard about this book years ago and just found a copy this year. It was worth the wait! 4y

Mehso-so

🦆🦆 The travels far and wide (including crossing the Pacific on a container ship) and the facts about how our globalized world works and how the ocean is a part of it, we're fascinating. However, I found the author insufferable. A few Moby Dick references we're to be expected, but this contained an entire essay, plus several other tangents unrelated to the actual thesis of the book.

Looks like a fun book to me!

#TBRtemptation post 8! I think you get the gist of the book from its extensive sub-title, lol. And the main title is fantastic 😁👍🏻. Who wouldn't want to follow a bunch of rubber duckies around the world? You'll learn about shipping conglomerates, scientists in the Arctic, maverick sailors, & Chinese toy factories. Science, mythology, economics, & the climate, all get to play a role. Sounds like quirky fun! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

drokka My brother was talking about just this thing at the week end. I'll have to tell him there's a book about it. 7y
Hooked_on_books This book is great! There's info about the oceanic gyres and how/how quickly floating items can move through the ocean. If you aren't anti-plastic and pro-recycling before you read it, you will be after. 7y

Ugh. This had such promise! Such an interesting premise! Yet three weeks later I'm barely a third of the way through. It's such a slog. I'm apparently not in the right mindset. Mostly I'm finding it boring and more about his sea trips than anything interesting about the flotsam. Though I am committed to even more severely cutting down my usage of disposable plastics.

keithmalek I agree. I couldn't get through this one. 7y

In the corner, a surfboard leaned against a fence, and a pair of wet suits, one bright blue the other bright red, hung from a clothesline. They looked like melted superheroes.
