A World Without You
A World Without You | Beth Revis
"A story thats both heartbreaking and hopeful." Publishers Weekly, starred review A heartrending, beautifully complex look at mental illness, life, and loss. I tore through the pages, and, days later, this story still has a hold on me. Alexandra Bracken, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Darkest Minds series and Passenger After the unexpected loss of his girlfriend, a teenage boy suffering from delusions is convinced that he can travel through time to save her, in this gripping new novel from New York Times bestselling author Beth Revis. Seventeen-year-old Bo has always had delusions that he can travel through time. When he was ten, Bo claimed to have witnessed the Titanic hit an iceberg, and at fifteen, he found himself on a Civil War battlefield, horrified by the bodies surrounding him. So when his concerned parents send him to a school for troubled youth, Bo assumes he knows the truth: that hes actually attending Berkshire Academy, a school for kids who, like Bo, have "superpowers." At Berkshire, Bo falls in love with Sofia, a quiet girl with a tragic past and the superpower of invisibility. Sofia helps Bo open up in a way he never has before. In turn, Bo provides comfort to Sofia, who lost her mother and two sisters at a very young age. But even the strength of their love isnt enough to help Sofia escape her deep depression. After she commits suicide, Bo is convinced that she's not actually dead. He believes that she's stuck somewhere in time that he somehow left her in the past, and now it's his job to save her. Not since Ned Vizzinis Its Kind of a Funny Story has there been such a heartrending depiction of mental illness. In her first contemporary novel, Beth Revis guides readers through the mind of a young man struggling to process his grief as he fights his way through his delusions. As Bo becomes more and more determined to save Sofia, he has to decide whether to face his demons head-on, or succumb to a psychosis that will let him be with the girl he loves. From the Hardcover edition.

This is about Bo, a teen who believes he can travel through time and attends a special academy for teens with mental illness, and his sister, Phoebe, and how Bo‘s mental illness affects their family. After his girlfriend Sofia‘s death, Bo starts a downward spiral and believes he can save her with his “power.” It could have been shorter, and TBH, I still don‘t know what‘s true and what isn‘t!

This book tackled tough material and was insightful. It was sometimes tough to follow, but part of that may be by design.

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did. The first half dragged on and on, and definitely could have benefitted from some additional editing. The story picked up in the second half though, and by the end I was definitely invested in what happened to Bo and the rest of Berkshire Academy.

Bo believes he has the ability to travel through time. His delusions take him to a school for other kids with "superpowers," a love interest, and tragedy.

I haven't yet read this book, and though I've seen mixed reviews of it, I'm intrigued to learn how Bo's story plays out. #TBR

This story focuses on a brother and sister, Bo and Phoebe, and the struggle the mental illness takes on everyone in a family.

After finishing I'm still not sure whether Bo suffers from mental illness or if he actually can travel in time! The author does such a great job writing it that you can't decipher what's actually real or not especially when you read the epilogue.

I really enjoyed this book.

Well then...this book was terrifying and confusing and a little bit wonderful.
It is about a boy with a mental illness and we're along for the ride as he slides deeper into his delusions.
Honestly, I still don't know what was true.

This book has two perspectives, but my favorite was the brother. His girlfriend has disappeared into the past because of his secret power. Or has she? I'm a sucker for unreliable narrators, and this one had me book-binging.

BookNerdBritt I really enjoyed this one! I'm also a huge fan of unreliable narrators. The sister's perspective was an interesting way to keep the story grounded. 8y

My experience reading this book was as much story as it was a chance to peek inside the mind of an author. The stickies reminded me just how much thought predicates plot, character and theme decisions. This book reintroduced me to the beauty of these decisions. I felt for Bo's sister Phoebe as she tried to compensate for Bo by being perfect, driven, stable. It's a story I'm still sitting with - that I think I'll be thinking about for some time.

Interesting idea and creative approach to mental illness, but the characters and plot were not compelling. I would have preferred the story if the kids really did have super powers!

I kind of wish I hadn't read certain information on the book jacket before reading. It would have made the first reading more suspenseful. That being said, I would still like to re-read this already. So many emotions. I love how Revis writes Bo's perspective. He has a fascinating brain.

I'm a sucker for a good unreliable narrator, & this book DELIVERS. The only difference is that the reader knows what's real & what's not while we watch Bo (who thinks he's a time traveler) struggle to come to terms with the truth. Even though you know he's in a mental institution (occasional chapters from his sister's POV provide perspective), you can't help but to root for him on his quest to save the girlfriend he thinks is trapped in the past.

LiteraryinPA Wow, this sounds really powerful and intense. 8y
BookNerdBritt @LiteraryinLititz It is! The author based a lot of it on her relationship with her own brother who suffered from mental illness. 8y
