A World Without You
A World Without You | Beth Revis
"A story thats both heartbreaking and hopeful." Publishers Weekly, starred review A heartrending, beautifully complex look at mental illness, life, and loss. I tore through the pages, and, days later, this story still has a hold on me. Alexandra Bracken, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Darkest Minds series and Passenger After the unexpected loss of his girlfriend, a teenage boy suffering from delusions is convinced that he can travel through time to save her, in this gripping new novel from New York Times bestselling author Beth Revis. Seventeen-year-old Bo has always had delusions that he can travel through time. When he was ten, Bo claimed to have witnessed the Titanic hit an iceberg, and at fifteen, he found himself on a Civil War battlefield, horrified by the bodies surrounding him. So when his concerned parents send him to a school for troubled youth, Bo assumes he knows the truth: that hes actually attending Berkshire Academy, a school for kids who, like Bo, have "superpowers." At Berkshire, Bo falls in love with Sofia, a quiet girl with a tragic past and the superpower of invisibility. Sofia helps Bo open up in a way he never has before. In turn, Bo provides comfort to Sofia, who lost her mother and two sisters at a very young age. But even the strength of their love isnt enough to help Sofia escape her deep depression. After she commits suicide, Bo is convinced that she's not actually dead. He believes that she's stuck somewhere in time that he somehow left her in the past, and now it's his job to save her. Not since Ned Vizzinis Its Kind of a Funny Story has there been such a heartrending depiction of mental illness. In her first contemporary novel, Beth Revis guides readers through the mind of a young man struggling to process his grief as he fights his way through his delusions. As Bo becomes more and more determined to save Sofia, he has to decide whether to face his demons head-on, or succumb to a psychosis that will let him be with the girl he loves. From the Hardcover edition.

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did. The first half dragged on and on, and definitely could have benefitted from some additional editing. The story picked up in the second half though, and by the end I was definitely invested in what happened to Bo and the rest of Berkshire Academy.

Bo believes he has the ability to travel through time. His delusions take him to a school for other kids with "superpowers," a love interest, and tragedy.

I haven't yet read this book, and though I've seen mixed reviews of it, I'm intrigued to learn how Bo's story plays out. #TBR

This story focuses on a brother and sister, Bo and Phoebe, and the struggle the mental illness takes on everyone in a family.

After finishing I'm still not sure whether Bo suffers from mental illness or if he actually can travel in time! The author does such a great job writing it that you can't decipher what's actually real or not especially when you read the epilogue.

I really enjoyed this book.

Well then...this book was terrifying and confusing and a little bit wonderful.
It is about a boy with a mental illness and we're along for the ride as he slides deeper into his delusions.
Honestly, I still don't know what was true.

#octphotochallenge #bestnarrator

This book has two perspectives, but my favorite was the brother. His girlfriend has disappeared into the past because of his secret power. Or has she? I'm a sucker for unreliable narrators, and this one had me book-binging.

BookNerdBritt I really enjoyed this one! I'm also a huge fan of unreliable narrators. The sister's perspective was an interesting way to keep the story grounded. 3y

My experience reading this book was as much story as it was a chance to peek inside the mind of an author. The stickies reminded me just how much thought predicates plot, character and theme decisions. This book reintroduced me to the beauty of these decisions. I felt for Bo's sister Phoebe as she tried to compensate for Bo by being perfect, driven, stable. It's a story I'm still sitting with - that I think I'll be thinking about for some time.

This box left me feeling at best, disappointed, and at worst, ripped off. The quarterly YA is $50 per box. I could buy everything in this box for $39 with free shipping on Amazon. And that's rounding up. Am I paying $11 extra dollars for the bookplate and "annotation?" If that's the case I'll stick with Uppercase. Color me unimpressed. I don't always love everything in OwlCrate but their stuff is unique and I feel like the value is there.

Adventuresbetweenpages I love Owl Crate. I thought about Uppercase but I just like the special stuff in Owl Crate more! And $30 a month isn't bad at all for what you get. I'd be made at this $50 box too 😭😭😭 3y

Interesting idea and creative approach to mental illness, but the characters and plot were not compelling. I would have preferred the story if the kids really did have super powers!

I kind of wish I hadn't read certain information on the book jacket before reading. It would have made the first reading more suspenseful. That being said, I would still like to re-read this already. So many emotions. I love how Revis writes Bo's perspective. He has a fascinating brain.

I'm a sucker for a good unreliable narrator, & this book DELIVERS. The only difference is that the reader knows what's real & what's not while we watch Bo (who thinks he's a time traveler) struggle to come to terms with the truth. Even though you know he's in a mental institution (occasional chapters from his sister's POV provide perspective), you can't help but to root for him on his quest to save the girlfriend he thinks is trapped in the past.

LiteraryinLititz Wow, this sounds really powerful and intense. 3y
BookNerdBritt @LiteraryinLititz It is! The author based a lot of it on her relationship with her own brother who suffered from mental illness. 3y

Yay! I received my Quarterly Co. Literary YA box! Each quarter an author curates a box geared towards YA reads. This box was curated by Beth Revis and it featured her new book A World Without You. The box's theme was time travel. It also had a signed book plate for Revis' book, 2 other time travel books, a magnetic cable photo holder and an Emily Dickinson card with quote stickers! I'm excited to read these books and I can't wait for next quarter!
