This book was a mess but the beginning was really promising so it kept me reading. I kinda wish I'd given up though.

I'm in the Dolomites during an icy December and something monstrous is afoot

Modern #gothic meets The People in the Trees. I liked the first 2/3 of the story but the last part fell flat for me.
I'm new to the horror genre, and while I appreciaed the aesthetics, I found parts of the plot to be either unbelivable or disrespectful/problematic. Ex. Why did Luca leave in the first place? and how did they have a non-pregnant woman lactate? I don't have enough word count to go into the rest I found just...wild.
A book that was, truly, only ever interesting for a single chapter, and that was like chapter 2 or 3. Also, it's Stupid City in here. Honestly, if it had been as aggressively doofy as it managed at its best I would have called it a so-so, maybe. I can be generous in a hypothetical!
This book has me missing Mexican Gothic something fierce - Noemi would know if it had been three weeks or just one!
My last read of 2020-a strange read for a strange year. It was a slow-burn, gothic horror in the beginning-which I loved. Then it took a turn and was like a separate book. I was a little fatigued and unimpressed by the end.

#throwback to a few months ago, when my front lawn was my haven and the sun was my God. 😭 💔 I had a killer year for books so far, including this one that I read at the end of the summer! An incredible blend of scientific and gothic thrills. This book had my favourite trope: a massive spooky mansion in an isolated village. Do you have a story trope you never tire of?

This was a surprise! For something I thought was going to be a horror, it definitely is more about finding family. I really enjoyed it.
I‘ve only read the first chapter, but can already feel that I‘m going to be fully engrossed in this. Is it spooky? I really hope it‘s spooky!
Not what I was expecting. Paranormal fiction. Bert learn she's the last living member of her ancient family line. Sadly, the writing was not fabulous. Improbable, which is totally fine, I can suspend belief with fiction. However, the strange way the main character reacts to the events just made me dislike the book. Plot-based, which at least helped keep things moving. 🤷🏼♀️
Starting this holiday weekend off on the right foot! 🛀 📖 🍷 (my kindle and another backup book in the top right peeking in too!) #bookandbath
Spent part of Father's Day reading by the pool. This book is fluffier than I thought it would be, but that's fine by me. A little fluff may be just what I need right now. 🏊♀️
Overall, this is a book you have to read for yourself. I know there will be some people who read it and won‘t like it and that‘s totally okay. But others will just devour it. It‘s a very different book so the only way to know is to read it for yourself.

Suspend all disbelief when reading this book. There is nothing & I mean absolutely nothing that is believable. That being said, after a slow start, the book really picks up as the author channels the best elements of gothic fiction. And then there‘s a twist & the book shifts from gothic into something else. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Does the story work quite as well as the author intended? Not really...but it is an entertaining escape & I enjoyed it.
Oh my, how I enjoyed this book. A Gothic mystery set in modern times. Who wouldn't want to find out they have a surprise inheritance? Of course, it comes with a castle in the Alps, but also a family curse. You need to read this book if you like suspenseful novels.
It snowed AGAIN today. (I actually enjoy snow/winter but honestly, not in mid-April.) And the governor announced schools are closed for the remainder of the year. All of which is to say I made a batch of Lemon White Chocolate Chip cookies and am enjoying one along with the tagged book which has transported me to a brooding castle in Italy filled with the requisite odd and quirky characters. Because sometimes you just want cookies, coffee & a book.
This was super fun to read!! Bert Monte finds out she is the last living heir to the Montebianco family‘s fortune high in the Alps of Italy. In order to claim it she must go there in person. She ends up sort of trapped there and finds that her family has massive secrets. Wonderfully atmospheric and suspenseful throughout. I read the entire story in two big chunks!! I loved it!!
Thank you @WilliamMorrowBooks for sending me this copy for review!!

THE HUNGER author @Almakatsu is back with THE DEEP, mixing history and horror with spectacular results. Library Journal called THE DEEP "A riveting, seductively menacing tale of love, loss, and betrayal set amid the glamour of the Titanic." Today on #read99women she's previewing the new novel from the author of ANGELOLOGY, Danielle Trussoni's THE ANCESTOR. http://www.greermacallister.com/blog/2020/3/15/read99women-alma-katsu
Always read the preternaturally brilliant Danielle Trussoni with your black cat. THE ANCESTOR arrives in April. I‘m loving it.
