Tom Hanks is a wonderful narrator for this story the writing is just so good yet a little long in this one.The story follows Danny and Maeve and their childhood home The Dutch House with a mother who disappeared and a emotionally distant father, his new wife and children, and later Danny‘s wife and children this novel looks at two siblings who find home with each other

TheKidUpstairs @TrishB I went into it not expecting much. Despite being a Patchett fan, the description just sounded 'meh' to me. But then I found myself completely enthralled, couldn't put it down. 4y
TheKidUpstairs @MelissaSue81 @HOTPock3tt @WhiskeyMistress you all obviously have wonderful taste! 4y

I kept seeing this suggested and finally borrowed it. It did not disappoint. Stayed up incredibly late reading it, so don‘t start if you are busy the following day. Enjoy!

#Bookreport Miss Marley was a great prequel to A Christmas Carol. The Dutch House on audio gets all the stars and is on my #Bestof2020 book list. I hated for it to end and need to read more Ann Patchett. I‘ve only read The Magician‘s Assistant. I‘ve given myself permission to not finish #LitsyAtoZ by reading Virgil. It‘s feeling like homework more than anything else.

Cinfhen I‘m glad u gave yourself a pass/ there‘s nothing worse than hate reading for a challenge!! I can recommend these 3 by Patchett 4y

Cinfhen This one is popular too but not my favorite 4y
Deblovestoread @cinfhen. Thanks for the recs. Bel Canto has languished on my shelf for years although I don‘t know why. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Freespirit I am reading the Dutch House and loving it💕 4y
BookishMarginalia Good decision! The 2021 #LitsyAtoZ link will be up soon! 4y
Deblovestoread @BookishMarginalia Thanks for the heads up, Gloria. 2021 is the year of slaying the TBR. I think this year will be all books from my kindle...I cannot pass up a good deal. 😂 4y

Today's book haul! My local library had a super underwhelming sale today (thanks, Covid), but I still found these gems. I had Artemis and Commonwealth before we moved and I was happy to add them back to the collection. 💕📚

I went book shopping yesterday! I bought The People in the Trees new, but the other five are from the thrift store. I was so surprised to see The Guest List there because it came out this month. I‘ve already read it and didn‘t love it, but I know others who will.

I buy 99% of my books secondhand and was excited to be back in the store. Unfortunately, my experience was dampened by all the people disregarding the simple safety measures...

TEArificbooks Great haul 5y
EKonrad I know what you mean! Why are people not wearing masks?!? 😫 5y

candority @EKonrad Exactly! Or staying 6 ft apart and following the very simple directional markers for the aisle?! It was driving me nuts by the time I left 5y
fleeting I love People in the Trees! 5y
candority @fleeting I‘m happy to hear that! I haven‘t heard too many people talk about it, but I‘ve wanted to read it since I read A Little Life. 5y
fleeting I know, it's really underrated. I read that first before A Little Life. :) 5y

Loved this. Read on audio - a real copy of this might need to make it's way into my bookshelves sometime.

I loved spending time with Danny and Maeve. Beautiful writing.

Just finished this lovely book. A glimpse into a family, exploring the ties that bind us and the way loss can impact people in different ways. Incredibly well written, and wraps you up in the lives of the characters. A good book.

Meaw_catlady you will have to hand it over to me next 5y

Beautiful cover and beautiful book. Loved the relationship over the years between Danny and Maeve. Seems brother/sister relationships like this are rarely explored so deeply. Totally engrossed in their lives and imagining the Dutch House, their father, and delving into each characters motivations. A good read that helped me escape my corona anxiety. #covercrush #booked2020

Crazeedi I enjoyed this one too 5y

I loved this book! I adore the cover and, for me, it‘s one of those where you *should* judge a book by its cover - the writing is just as beautiful.

I‘m using this for #bookclubworthy for #booked2020 as I have so many questions I‘d like to discuss with an IRL book club, but I‘m not in one! 🤣 (A couple posted below so no spoilers here...)

squirrelbrain What did you think of Maeve‘s behaviour? I can‘t figure out if she was manipulative, or just hurting. 5y
squirrelbrain Is the book about The Dutch House, or Maeve, or even Danny? (edited) 5y
ElaineR Got this sitting staring at me but soooo many books vying for my attention at the minute. However Bel Canto was a truly beautiful and I've read a couple of her other books as well. She's such a beautiful writer. Really want to savour this when I do get to it. 5y

squirrelbrain What is your view of Andrea? Did she ‘deserve‘ her ending? 5y
squirrelbrain @ElaineR - it was looking at me for a while too, from the TBR shelf, but I picked it up when it was featured on the Women‘s Prize for Fiction list earlier this week. Definitely don‘t wait too long to read it! 5y
Fridameetslucy I‘m reading patchers commonwealth now - if you want to do a book discussion - let‘s do it! I‘m in 5y
squirrelbrain I enjoyed Commonwealth @Fridameetslucy but loved The Dutch House more. Have you read any other Patchett books? 5y
Fridameetslucy @squirrelbrain I‘ve read many but Bell Canto is my favorite 5y
squirrelbrain Bel Canto was my favourite @Fridameetslucy, but I think this one has just overtaken it slightly. 5y
ElaineR @squirrelbrain praise indeed and exciting to hear! 5y
Crazeedi @squirrelbrain @Fridameetslucy I really enjoyed this one too 5y

I haven‘t been able to stop tearing up since I finished this. It‘s not a page-turner in the traditional sense, but it‘s such a pure distillation of love and loyalty and family that I couldn‘t put it down.

Boy I've read some great stuff in 2020 already. This is a masterpiece. The characters come alive, balanced with enough plot to keep things moving. Just the way patchett unfolds info about the story in the first chapter is wonderful. I haven't read everything by her but I've read a lot and this hands down is my favorite.

Megabooks How the little one? Have you read Free Food for Millionaires yet? I‘m just starting it. 5y
8little_paws @Megabooks he's good!! I haven't started it yet. I have a stack of library ones to read first. But I'm almost done with them, just chipping away!! 5y
