State of Wonder | Ann Patchett
LONGLISTED FOR THE ORANGE PRIZE FOR FICTION 2012 There were people on the banks of the river. Among the tangled waterways and giant anacondas of the Brazilian Rio Negro, an enigmatic scientist is developing a drug that could alter the lives of women for ever. Dr Annick Swenson's work is shrouded in mystery; she refuses to report on her progress, especially to her investors, whose patience is fast running out. Anders Eckman, a mild-mannered lab researcher, is sent to investigate.A curt letter reporting his untimely death is all that returns. Now Marina Singh, Anders' colleague and once a student of the mighty Dr Swenson, is their last hope. Compelled by the pleas of Anders's wife, who refuses to accept that her husband is not coming home, Marina leaves the snowy plains of Minnesota and retraces her friend's steps into the heart of the South American darkness, determined to track down Dr. Swenson and uncover the secrets being jealously guarded among the remotest tribes of the rainforest. What Marina does not yet know is that, in this ancient corner of the jungle, where the muddy waters and susurrating grasses hide countless unknown perils and temptations, she will face challenges beyond her wildest imagination. Marina is no longer the student, but only time will tell if she has learnt enough.

“Full of big ideas and marvellously peculiar characters.” Oh I did love this. It was quiet, gentle, crazy, peculiar, completely absorbing. I fell hard for all those characters and it broke my heart 🐍

Really enjoyed this unique plot with all its drug discovery research aspects. This is a journey amidst Amazon forest with all the wonders & dangers where both self discovery & drug discovery goes hand in hand. I like the characterisation & intricate details ( ignoring some science facts, as it is fiction) This is my first 5 star read of the year 🥰😊😀

A fascinating read set mostly in the Amazon, Dr Annick Swenson is working on a drug which could help women's lives. But the pharmaceutical company haven't heard from her in ages, they send another doctor but then receive a letter saying he dead. Finally Dr Marina Singh is sent and what she discovers is astounding. I didn't really think I would enjoy this but I was very gripped from the beginning.

SamAnne Might be my favorite Patchett! 2y

Not sure why I haven't read this book before because Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors. Love her character development and her strong descriptions of setting. Also everything is not neatly tied up in a bow at the end and perhaps that's why she always leaves me wanting to come back for more of her writing.

Pharmacologist Dr Singh goes deep into the Amazon forest to try to find the body of her coworker Anders (my husband‘s name) at the behest of his wife Karen (my name). (What a bizarre coincidence!) and to learn the progress of another doctor‘s attempt to find a drug to prolong women‘s fertility. Her search for Anders falls to the side as she assimilates into the tribe & learns about this miracle drug. Very slow at the start but picks up steam ⬇️

Texreader about a quarter into the book. A very entertaining and unique read although I kept questioning the author‘s descriptions of the natives. But perhaps I‘m being too “woke”? I thought the development of the main characters was excellent. I‘ve never read Patchett before but she‘s clearly an accomplished writer. Glad this was my pick for #authoramonth. I enjoyed it very much. @Soubhiville 3y

Ok those of y‘all reading Ann Patchett for #authoramonth, just she tend to write paragraphs that are longer than sin? Or is it just this book? I‘m enjoying the book but this is driving me crazy! If this is her style I don‘t see me reading another one. It‘s kind of like having the font too small to read. It‘s just taxing.

Ruthiella I‘ve read this and a few others from her but I don‘t remember the paragraph length. I guess that doesn‘t bug me. I have noticed in other books however, that I NEED chapter breaks! 🤔 3y

Jennifer, thank you so much for this book, the Valentine, and the candy! It totally made my day yesterday. I thought the rules of the capitalistic, head of big pharma, handbook stated that when you have a rogue scientist in the middle of the Amazon you send paid mercenaries to kidnap them and bring them back. Ann Patchett, she believes in a much kinder way. You send your secret lover, many years younger than you, lab partner to the previous 👇🏼

Reggie guy you sent down there who everyone believes is now dead. Ann Patchett‘s writing is top notch and she made some great points about what science and big money mows down in it‘s goal of the greater good. But this story- from it‘s slow, sad, first 100 pages, to an opera house that had no business being in here, to the last couple chapters that have set me aflame, it‘s kinda a no for me. So we‘ll just say so-so. 4y

I‘m halfway through State of Wonder and and just feeling like it‘s the less exciting literary version of The Congo. I don‘t even like any of the characters in SOW and it‘s covered in this thick pall of heat, insects, and sadness. At least in The Congo you had hippos eating people and Amy. Also, don‘t tell me but I don‘t think Anders is dead. I think that‘s me wanting this book to be more exciting. 🤞🏼Here‘s to the second half being better.

Every Patchett I‘ve read has been beautifully written and this was no different. But my head just couldn‘t get past the improbability of the story about the development of a life-altering drug in the Amazonian jungle. I think it was a bit too far-fetched me to fully enjoy - between a pick and a so-so.

This was kind of a pointless book. I took it on a road trip and had nothing else to read and then I couldn‘t just not finish it. It finally got interesting at the very end, I did like the way it was all wrapped up. The first two hundred pages were boring, filled with such pointless details and backstory that had nothing to do with the plot.

Ann Patchett is a wonderful writer. The vividness of her descriptions in this book frequently had me catching my breath. But... I found it really hard to believe in the set-up for the story. Why send researchers in quite a different field in search of a renegade scientist? And the problems regarding the drug under development were immediately glaringly obvious. Maybe this is why I never felt connected to the characters. A pick with reservations.

BarbaraBB I agree, the premise was unrealistic. Also why would she continue taking Lariam (there are alternatives!) and why the relationship with Mr Fox? What did it add to the story? Despite these things I also really liked it. 5y
LeeRHarry I really liked this one - best Patchett I‘ve read so far. 5y
CarolynM @BarbaraBB And Marina's relationship with her father appeared meaningful to start with but then didn't seem relevant by the end. The sex with Anders seemed somewhat gratuitous too. On the other hand, the scene with the anaconda literally made me shudder and squawk out loud! (edited) 5y

CarolynM @BarbaraBB Did my previous comment appear under a spoiler? I tried to put one on but I'm not sure if it worked. 5y
CarolynM @LeeRHarry The fourth I've read and my least favourite, I'm afraid. 5y
Cathythoughts I‘m still sticking with The Dutch House as my fave ... and I loved Bel Canto. I DNF this tagged one & I‘m not inclined to go back. Also DNF Commonwealth, but I‘d like to return to Commonwealth.... .... I look forward to whatever she writes next 5y
rwmg This was my favourite of hers I've read. So atmospheric 5y
CarolynM @Cathythoughts Those are the ones I've read too and I thought they were all great. Commonwealth is my favourite. I'm going to try this one next 5y
CarolynM @rwmg It certainly was atmospheric! 5y
BarbaraBB The spoiler worked and yes, the relationship with the father seemed irrelevant too in the end. I did most like Annick and the conversations they had. It was engaging, no more no less for me. 5y
CarolynM @BarbaraBB Thanks😘 5y
Reggie @BarbaraBb @CarolynM I hope she went and quit and dumped Mr.Fox. and then went back to get recertified to practice medicine. I also want to know what Anders was eating out in the Amazon for months that he was healthy enough to have enough strength to have sex with Marina. And what happens to Easter I am livid. I secretly hate this book, but she writes so well. Ughh this book. (edited) 4y
BarbaraBB @Reggie I just scrolled back to read my own review. I can‘t believe I gave it a pick (and that I read it only a year ago!), I still get annoyed by the things you mention! 4y
Reggie @BarbaraBB lol, there are some books I have definitely let slide by with a pick, so I totally understand. But yeah, still bugged by this one. 4y
CarolynM @Reggie @BarbaraBB Yes to all of that and there were other irritating aspects - the Australian backpackers for example (or maybe that was just me😆) but no matter how much the content was annoying me I enjoyed reading it. Run has become my favourite Patchett. 4y

#BookHaulChallenge

I‘ve only read her Bel Canto (loved it) and this is on my tbr.
A pharmacologist travels deep into the jungles in Brazil in pursuit of a scientist and must fight her way back. Sounds like a perilous journey.

My top six books so far this year...! All 5 star reads! 👍🏻

GloVerdino I think State of Wonder was the first book that made me cry, Easter broke my heart ❤️ 5y
Caroline2 @GloVerdino Yeah it was so sad about Easter. But he was reunited with his real family, his poor mum and dad thought he was dead! Plus they took good care of that doctor so maybe the tribe wasn‘t that bad?? 5y
chapter_fifty2017 Love " state of wonder " so underrated!! 5y
Caroline2 @chapter_fifty2017 me too!! My fav book so far this year. 👍🏻 5y
