Loose Woman
Loose Woman: Poems | Sandra Cisneros
NOW AVAILABLE IN EBOOK FOR THE FIRST TIME With her novel THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET, Sandra Cisneros introduced one of the most lyrically inventive voices ever to emerge from the barrio. Now she gives us a book of poems with the lilt of NORTEO music and the romantic abandon of a hot Saturday night. Celebrating the cataclysms of love and mapping the faultlines in the Mexican-American psyche, LOOSE WOMAN is by turns bawdy and introspective, flagrantly erotic and unabashedly funny, a work that is both a tour de force and a triumphant outpouring of pure soul.

National Poetry Month: Day 13! ❤📖

Here is another favorite by Sandra Cisneros, called Vino Tinto. I love the lush imagery in this poem!

If you're wondering what book this is with poems I keep taking pictures of, it's a journal I put together years ago that is just filled with all my favorite poems. I printed them out and taped them all in there like a crazy person! 😂 It was very comforting to carry it with me!

#NationalPoetryMonth

TrishB I have one of those too 😁👍🏻 3y
Branwen @TrishB That makes me feel a lot better about doing it! I'm glad! 😃💕👍 3y

Mehso-so

Warning: I have a lot of thoughts about this collection, which I expected to love & didn‘t.

In her poetry collection, “Loose Woman”, Sandra Cisneros reveals that she‘s A MESS. And proud of it. To her, it seems to show that she‘s living. I‘m torn between thinking, “How brave of her to show that she‘s a mess. How free,” & “Girl, make better decisions” (especially about men), & “Alyisha, it‘s not cool to judge other women. Stop that right now.” 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/4: Cisneros seems to lean hard into the negative stereotypes of what a Woman is — “sexual/promiscuous”, “emotional”, “crazy”, & yeah, even “homemaker” (albeit, for herself alone 😏✊🏻) — while absolutely *refusing* to be ashamed about any of it. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 2/4: Sometimes, allowing yourself to be those things & feel those things feels honest; it‘s a relief. *Always* claiming to be those things and feel those things, though? That seems constructed. Or maybe just unhealthy. Which begs the question: am I being ableist? And: am I being sexist? Am I being racist? Is my dislike learned? Or, is it a genuine, critical response to art? Tonally, this was a challenging collection for me. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 3/4: Unfortunately, I also didn‘t love the poems themselves. They seemed somehow both too blunt & too full of figurative language all at the same time. (edited) 6y
See All 10 Comments
monalyisha 4/4: I think we need straightforward terms about womanhood & our bodies in our discourse — AND in our poetry, especially since there‘s not currently space made for them *anywhere.* Cisneros succeeds at bringing this need to light. Unfortunately, she also brings the term “pee-pee” to light & I‘m not so convinced we need that.🤷‍♀️ (edited) 6y
DivineDiana I hear you! Personally, I adore beautiful language and those type of words, while authentic, do not appeal to my aesthetic. Thank you for your honesty. 6y
Weaponxgirl Thankyou for an honest review, always appreciated 6y

VeganCleopatra This photo is utterly depressing as bullfighting is horribly cruel. 6y
Booksnchill Is this a poetry collection? Love the imagery 6y
monalyisha @VeganCleopatra Sorry, girl. Didn‘t mean to start your day with negativity! I purposely chose one that was more of a stand-off than an active fight. But I understand your objection & respect your commitment to getting it out there! (edited) 6y

monalyisha @Booksnchill Yeah! I read “The House on Mango Street” recently & loved it, so I decided to try one of the author‘s books of poems. I don‘t love it, actually. 🙈 6y
Craftylikefox Wonderful imagery. I always make the bed in the morning before leaving. A nice way to think about it now 😊 6y

Another one-poem, messy morning for me. But we did it! We made it through January & I‘m proud to have clocked 31 straight mornings of #poemsbeforephones.

I‘ve been thinking, though (see above for real-time image): going forward, I plan to continue my daily reading but post *only* when something strikes me as particularly beautiful or poignant.

For those who‘ve joined me, THANK YOU! 😊 Feel free to continue posting, hashtagging, & tagging me!

I came THISCLOSE to skipping out on my #poemsbeforephones resolution for the first time today. I unexpectedly had to be at work an hour earlier than normal (long story, but: blame it on the snow). Since I commute, this significantly impacted my morning routine! At the last minute, I hurriedly crammed a single poem in before rushing out of the house like a bat out of hell! 🦇🔥 I *think* it was about morning glories? 🤷‍♀️🙈

DivineDiana You are a warrior! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
monalyisha @DivineDiana I love that the only way in which I‘m capable of doing “warrior” involves morning glories. 😆 6y

4 poems this morning & I actually really liked one of them! It‘s titled “Cloud.” It‘s jam-packed with metaphors & similes, which is maybe a little much, but I loved the one pictured above.

It also started with a Thich Nhat Hanh quote: “If you are a poet, you will see clearly that there is a cloud floating in this sheet of paper.” ☁️

3 poems this morning, which brought me to the end of the second (out of three) sections. I can‘t say I‘m upset about nearing the end of this collection. It‘s not that I‘ve vehemently disliked it...it just hasn‘t been my favorite.

3 #poemsbeforephones this morning.

I didn‘t love anything but I did learn the word “dimity.”

dim·i·ty
/ˈdimədē/
noun
a hard-wearing, sheer cotton fabric woven with raised stripes or checks.
"a nightcap in white dimity edged with lace"

DivineDiana I like the imagery of “ handkerchief and crumpled glove”. (edited) 6y

I read 2 or 3 poems this morning before completely misplacing my book. I‘ve checked every place — logical & completely stupid — I could think of. Did I make it *into* the bed? Did I put it in the fridge when I got milk for my coffee? It‘s GONE. It‘s a neat trick that I did, I guess. 🤷‍♀️🎩🐇 Should I take it on the road?

#poemsbeforephones

Lcsmcat Oh no! 6y

MommyOfTwo 🤣 I hate when I do that. Like when you put something in a place where you‘ll never forget but then can‘t find that place. 6y
DivineDiana Perfect cartoon! I usually find mine under the bed! 😉 6y
BridgetteM I have done the same thing with two books. They disappeared never to be found again. Hope you have better luck finding your book! 6y
monalyisha UPDATE: I recruited my husband to help me look. He found it... but not easily. He looked for a good 10-15 minutes straight (mostly because he was trying to make up for the tiff we got in this morning 😅). It was on top of the bureau, on top of my white jewelry box, closed. It‘s a thin volume, & the white pages were facing out. I moved it to make the bed...so I wouldn‘t make it into the bed & LOSE IT. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TERRIBLE. 😆😂 6y
Bradleygirl awwwww totally sympathize. My short term memory abandoned me a couple years ago after thyroid surgery 🤷‍♀️ 6y

7 poems this morning.
Sometimes I accidentally type #phonesbeforepoems & then have to laugh & erase it. 🤷‍♀️

The above lines also work for @Chrissyreadit ‘s #HappilyEverAfterSwap! I like the juxtaposition of fairytales & Texas; you‘re not in Denmark anymore, Princess!

I love the night madness/bat simile. 🦇

#poemsbeforephones

Last night, I dreamt that I forgot to read any poems this morning & totally ruined my New Year‘s Resolution streak. But! Good news! It was just a dream! Oh, thank god. 😅 I‘m clearly lacking for drama in my life (not complaining).

I read 6 poems this morning. The most I can say for the collection is that the poems always have great titles. I wish I felt the same about the poems themselves. 😕

Redwritinghood Good for you! Wednesday mornings just aren‘t great for me. I always seem to miss reading on Wednesdays. 6y

#poemsbeforephones:

I started a new poetry collection this morning by Sandra Cisneros. I just read & completely fell for “The House on Mango Street” (courtesy of @ladyneverwhere & #NewYearWhoDis), so I went into “Loose Woman” with high hopes. I read 10 poems this morning...but nothing has truly spoken to me thus far. My favorite was “Something Like Rivers Ran,” about sex & the dissolution of barriers (including language & binaries).

DivineDiana I started a new collection today as well! This challenge is helping my #mounttbr! On my shelves with a bookmark receipt from 2011! 6y
monalyisha @DivineDiana Nice! It‘s definitely helping mine, too. I‘ve never done a daily challenge before; it‘s working out pretty well! 6y
