Reading the Landscape of Europe
Reading the Landscape of Europe | May Theilgaard Watts
7 posts
Come along on a field trip with the esteemed American naturalist May Theilgaard Watts to see how nature, history and culture have written their stories on the landscapes of Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Britain. She makes a lively guide, knowledgeable, literary, witty and opinionated, drawing on botany, ecology, and geography, as well as literature and folklore, to explain how a place came to look and feel the way it does.In this sequel to her popular book Reading the Landscape of America, Watts explored the hills of Italy, the grouse heath of Britain, the Black Forest of Germany, the limestone plateaus of France, and much more, explaining the forces that shaped these landscapes and continue to change them. Illustrated with dozens of pen and ink by the author. Includes a key to identifying the trees of Europe.

Mid-year report on #readingeurope2020. In addition, I‘ve read Crucible for #France and I am currently reading The Alps for #Switzerland. I have books I‘ve bought to read for #Croatia #Cyprus #Denmark #Malta and #Slovenia

22 books read, 29 to go.

I‘d love suggestions for the remaining countries! Help!

BarbaraBB I loved this book for Hungary 4y
BarbaraBB For Czech Republic you could go with any work by Milan Kundera 4y

Update on #ReadingEurope2020, I am not deliberately choosing books from Europe, but I am noting when I read something by a European author. These are the countries I've read, now that we are nearly 1/2 way thru the year (more than one book for some countries). See comments below for book titles: ETA for some reason my photo of the map is not posting 😟

arubabookwoman France: The Masterpiece; Swann's Way/// The Netherlands: Rituals///// Norway: Will and Testament///// Sweden: After the Fire///// Scotland: A Question of Blood///// Ireland: This Must Be the Place///// England: Mary Barton///// Austria: Rock Crystal///// Spain: Death in Spring///// Hungary: Abigail (edited) 4y

Well I have finally completed the #ReadingEurope2020 reading challenge and what a fantastic challenge it was. I have read so many books out of my comfort zone that I have enjoyed and learnt from. I always say I don't enjoy history but realised that is not quite true. Read alot of war related books and found them really interesting.

@BarbaraBB @Librarybelle thank you for this fantastic challenge 😍

Librarybelle Congratulations! That is amazing! 4y
suzie.reads @Librarybelle thank you 😊 just wish I'd saved a better book for the end 🤣 4y

Librarybelle I don‘t listen to many audiobooks, so I can‘t think of any at the moment. If I do, I‘ll let you know! 4y
HannaPolkadots How about The Bird Tribunal by Agnes Ravatn? 4y

When you sign up for #readingeurope2020, you get some links to what countries are in Europe. I felt this was the better link. The other link had countries I felt were not in Europe. So I will follow this list. I thought I‘d post it for anyone trying to decide whether to do this challenge.

Marina_h I just had a look at the first link. Lebanon, Jordan, Syria... in Europe?? I agree with you. That list isn't accurate 4y
suzie.reads Much better list but I would split the United Kingdom up 🙂 4y
Texreader @suzie.reads Me too! 4y
Andrew65 @suzie.reads So would some of the U.K. nations at the moment! But I agree on the map it should have the different countries. @Texreader (edited) 4y
