The Inugami Curse | Seishi Yokomizo
18 posts | 12 read | 20 to read
A fiendish classic murder mystery, from one of Japan's greatest crime writers In 1940s Japan, the wealthy head of the Inugami Clan dies, and his family eagerly await the reading of the will. But no sooner are its strange details revealed than a series of bizarre, gruesome murders begins. Detective Kindaichi must unravel the clan's terrible secrets of forbidden liaisons, monstrous cruelty, and hidden identities to find the murderer, and lift the curse wreaking its bloody revenge on the Inugamis. The Inugami Curse is a fiendish, intricately plotted classic mystery from a giant of Japanese crime writing, starring the legendary detective Kosuke Kindaichi. Seishi Yokomizo (190281) was one of Japan's most famous and best-loved mystery writers. He was born in Kobe and spent his childhood reading detective stories, before beginning to write stories of his own, the first of which was published in 1921. He went on to become an extremely prolific and popular author, best known for his Kosuke Kindaichi series, which ran to 77 books, many of which were adapted for stage and television in Japan. The Inugami Curse is one of Kindaichi's most famous mysteries and has twicce been adapted for film in Japan.

Oh ho hoooo the melodrama! Tried to be twisty but dragged it out too long. Vicious people and sad people, various 'dirty secrets' that were only such because it was the 50s and earlier. People making other people miserable all over, at which point no reveal makes up for the overall mood. Tried to be gothic in description, just ended up overwrought. ⚠️Ableism, attempted SA, homophobia, misogyny, suicide

On the one hand, this book was a lot of fun, every bit as bonkers as the Honjin Murders. It also has a killer cover. On the other hand, the writing is pretty clunky at times. This book was 316 pages long, and you could easily have shaved off a hundred pages without losing anything. Detective Kindaichi's inner thoughts were mostly him reiterating events that had just occurred in the story, like a summary recap. Also, for a detective who's 👇

The_Penniless_Author ...supposedly worked some of the most infamous and gruesome murders in all of Japan, he seems surprisingly squeamish and apparently unable to understand the concept of motive. From how much he was "pulling at his hair" and "breaking out in a cold sweat", I'd expect him to be bald and perpetually drenched. Nynaeve didn't smooth her skirt half this much in WoT. Still, I enjoyed it despite all that. If you can borrow or buy cheap, go for it. 9mo
Ruthiella It‘s definitely on my list! Maybe a sophomore slump? 9mo

In February 194_, Sahei Inugami - one of the leading businessmen of the Shinshu region, the founder of the Inugami Group, and the so-called Silk King of Japan - died at his lakeside villa in Nasu at the venerable age of eighty-one.

Rearranging my bookshelves 🥰 It looks like I'm down to only 6 Japanese mysteries and thrillers...

vivastory Thanks for posting this! I have been meaning to read this Shimada book as I really enjoyed Tokyo Zodiac Murders when I read it several yrs ago. I also greatly enjoyed the Higashimo & all of the others are on my TBR 1y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory I've just ordered myself a few more off Amazon. Will post them when they arrive. It's a shame that more haven't been translated / or are tricky to get hold of. I wouldn't say I "enjoyed" the Tokyo zodiac murders because there was A LOT of women being chopped up in it, but I respected it enough to want to read another. 1y
BarbaraBB Please share them, you know I‘m a sucker for Japanese thrillers and mysteries too. Have you read these? 1y

RaeLovesToRead @BarbaraBB Ooh, thanks for the recommendations!! 👀 I will check them out... (and probably Add to Basket 🙈) 😁 1y
MicheleinPhilly I‘ve bought a bunch of these based on @BarbaraBb‘s reviews but have yet to read any of them. 🤦🏻‍♀️ #StoryofMyLife 1y
RaeLovesToRead @MicheleinPhilly I suggest starting with The Master Key ❤ it's a good'un 😊 1y
MicheleinPhilly I stacked it at some point! 1y
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly I know what you mean 🤣🧡 1y
MicheleinPhilly I have read People Who Eat Darkness. I read it while my wife was away on a business trip which was idiotic of me. @BarbaraBB 1y
RaeLovesToRead @BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly I don't tend to read true crime stories (I'm a sensitive soul!). Perhaps I should, as it would diversify my experience. It frightens me what horrible deeds humans are capable of 😔 1y
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly You‘re right, that‘s a book you should read in the sunshine surrounded by people! 1y

The second Detective Kindaichi book translated into English... I'm hoping for another Golden Age inspired murder mystery...

Loving the bizarre cover. (And the red legs contrast with my yellow tights today).

Another fab Japanese read, I‘ve learned that these are termed ‘Honkaku‘(orthodox) or ‘Shin Honkaku‘ (new orthodox) thanks to the Shedunnit Podcast. A disjointed and antagonistic family gather for the reading of an unusual will, bloodshed follows; the detective, Kindachai, must peel away the layers of animosity and lies to find the killer.

batsy I enjoyed this! I've been meaning to read The Honjin Murders. 3y
LeahBergen What a great cover! ❤️ 3y
veritysalter I really hope Pushkin Vertigo continue with the Kindachai series, I have loved this and ‘The Honjin Murders‘, Yokomizo wrote 77, but only two are translated in to English. 3y

Starting well. In 1940s Japan, the autocratic head of the Inugami family has died, leaving behind a will that cause discord between the remaining members of the clan.

I enjoyed this installment in the Kosuke Kindaichi series. It‘s the 6th in Japanese but the 2nd to be translated into English. The murders are delightfully gruesome and there is at least one great nod to John Dickson Carr (specifically The Crooked Hinge).

batsy I enjoyed this a lot! I've never read John Dickson Carr and really should :) 3y
rabbitprincess @batsy The Crooked Hinge might be a good place to start then! I also liked The Mad Hatter Mystery, because it‘s set in London. Both of those were reprinted by American Mystery Classics so should be easier to get a hold of 😊 3y
batsy @rabbitprincess Oh, nice! Thank you for the recs. 3y

The fact that they're confirming this guy's identity via handprint and the forensic analyst has said he will need about an hour to confirm the identity is giving me strong Crooked Hinge by John Dickson Carr vibes 🤓

Another foreign classic murder mystery from #PushkinVertigo this time from Japan. The writing feels a bit clunky at times. There‘s some repetition and jolting changes in narrative perspective. I‘m not sure if this is the result of the translation, characteristics of Japanese mysteries, or poor editing. The story kicks into high gear in the final 100 pages. If only the first 200 were as engrossing. Still a good read for murder season! 🔪⛩

charl08 Yup, struggled to keep my attention too. Hoping his other ones are more gripping throughout. 3y
rabbitprincess Looking forward to seeing what I think! I have to read The Honjin Murders first. 3y
iread2much The changes in narration are probably due to translation. Japanese can be really difficult to translate when it comes to subject in a narrative. Subject is generally implied, not stated in Japanese. 3y
batsy I enjoyed this a lot. Enjoyed the build up and found it very atmospheric. 3y

I think sometimes a book can have nothing wrong with it but something just doesn‘t connect with you. I wanted to like this and I‘m not sure why I didn‘t, but I kept finding my attention drifting badly and I lost track of people. When I found out who the murderer was I wasn‘t very interested. I don‘t think it was a bad book we just didn‘t vibe together.

This started out slow, but before you can say chrysanthemum (you'll find out, lol) shit got weird & creepy! An isolated winter setting & a rich family seething with secrets. To top it off, an oddball private detective named Kindaichi, who first appeared in The Honjin Murders. Although these books are standalones, I'll definitely be reading that one too. Set in the 1940s, I loved the atmosphere & period details. I greatly enjoyed this. #NetGalley
