It's always fun to go into a Patrick Ness book with an idea in your head and then have him switch and flip and turn it all about until the book is something completely different than what you were expecting. It's not exactly an action-packed thriller of a dragon story, but Ness never disappoints with the suspense, and I'm pleased with the story that turned out to be about humanity all along.

Although this took me a long time to read, please don‘t take that as an indication of its quality — just my up-and-down reading life. A fantastical journey through a world just a sidestep from our own in the surface, full of magic, dragons & doomsful prophecy on the surface; a heartfelt examination of the struggle, hubris & true magic of being human underneath. Patrick Ness always makes me feel things, and this engaging book was no exception.

Unfortunately this one fell flat for me. I just wish it was more. I wanted more magic, more dragon, more crazy. For everything going on didn't seem like anyone was too concerned. And I just didn't get enough on the characters to feel deeply. Idk it just fell flat unfortunately for me 2/5

“On a cold Sunday evening in early 1957–the very day, in fact, that Dwight David Eisenhower took the oath of office for the second time as President of the United States of America—Sarah Dewhurst waited with her father in the parking lot of the Chevron gas station for the dragon he‘d hired to help on the farm.”

Now THAT is an opening line. 🔥🐲

Burn did not set my world aflame. While I didn‘t feel the depth of this story in the way that I hoped to, it was entertaining and I cannot deny that some of the characters were truly wonderful.

Ness chose the perfect setting for this book. Set in the cold War Era. It tackles racial injustices, the fear of Russian spies, parellel uninverses and DRAGONS! However the swapping of POVs got a little messy, it would switch randomly and without a text saying who's pov it was. Because of the pov issue I'd give this 3.5 stars I stead of 4

Dragons, multiple dimensions, a teenage assassin, I thought this was great! I love when a “bad guy” has multiple levels that make you feel for them. Ness addresses homophobia and racism thoughtfully. Overall 👍👍

Normally I love anything by this author, and for the first part of this book I thought I'd end up giving this one lots of praise but the second half fell apart for me.

I love the historical setting mixed with dragons, but once things moved over into another universe I lost interest.

TheAromaofBooks This one is on my TBR based on its cover alone haha 3y

When I ship another box of books off to my sister I like to celebrate by picking up a book she would never read. Dragons? A teenage girl at the center of a prophesy? Two things that would cause her to pass and cause me to perk up with anticipation. I loved the alternate history 1950‘s setting and dragons just make everything better.

Thank you so much @Reggie I set your package aside and opened it when I got home from work to kick off my three day weekend the right way. You know Reese‘s are my favorite and won‘t last long and I am really excited about both books. The cover of Burn alone makes me want to rethink my weekend reading plan. I never know what to expect from a Patrick Ness' novel, but I always love them!
Burn is set in the '50s, rural America and there are dragons, a cult, secret service and a lot more.. 🐉🔥🇺🇸🇷🇺🛰💔☠🤯
I'll say no more, I don't want to spoil it to anybody.. Just do yourself a favor and read this book (or any other novel from this author)❣

Sooooo good. Like 😮🤯😭😮💙🐉 🙌—in no particular order because my brain is still scrambled—good. Best of all?!? The book reads as if there will be a sequel which is great because I definitely want more. I think this is a good story to dive into without knowing too much so no spoilers...but, I will say 1950s America, dragons, an assassin, a cult, a society on the brink & a girl who is the key to it all comes together in a great story. I loved it!

I loved this book so much!! You got the ordinary seeming mixed-family farm girl who will somehow save the world, her kinda boyfriend who she helps with the prejudice (acting on him being Asians as well as everybody else) deputy, the self-righteous scholar one-eyed dragon, the mislead gay assassin who learns to love... and a crazy prophecy about MAYBE defeating a dragon goddess. The slight character growth felt so real. Everythings connected #lgbtq

I‘m loosing my mind!!! In a good way. So good. Sooo the portal (apparently!??) opened, causing both Sarah and Kazimir to fall through - and then the assassin. To which Kazimir turned human, and their enemy human turned into a dragon when she followed??? So now they‘re in an alternative dimension of their life. This world has no dragons - which I‘m glad they took a moment to say that‘s so weird. “It is like a world without music.” #dragon

LIFE OF 2020. This poor teen. He‘s set up as an assassin to kill a “nobody” - important only due to the geography of what is to happen - and here he is trying to put at ease his kinda-boyfriend. He also seems to be way down the rabbit hole of being a Believer (i say cult, not religion) #dragon #lgbtq

It was at this moment I knew I was going to love this dragon. This little, rare blue sarcastic snarky, one-eyed dragon. I love any book with an intelligent dragon in it. Especially one where the dynamics of dragon life goes alongside American history and hateful prejudices between species. #dragon

This story was unique. A coming of age story, along with magic, some love (interracial, LGBTQ+) and some villains (loveable and not so much).

“What was wrong with this world? There were no dragons. Did men feel they needed to take their place?” Alternate worlds in the Pacific Northwest, both on the brink of nuclear war in 1956. What happens when dragons are thrown into the mix? And a cult of religious fanatics, gay teens falling in love, racist prejudice towards Black & Japanese Americans... there‘s a whole lot going on here!

"Dragons think men lie," her father said, offering an explanation but no apology, "and require at least one other to witness every legal agreement."
"Couldn't the witness just lie, too?"
"Of course, and of course it happens, but at the very least, the guilt spreads. Two men are compromised, not just one."
He shrugged. "Dragon philosophy."
