Again Again | E. Lockhart
20 posts | 18 read | 13 to read
In this novel full of surprises from the New York Times bestselling author of We Were Liars and Genuine Fraud, E. Lockhart ups the ante with an inventive and romantic story about human connection, forgiveness, self-discovery, and possibility. If you could live your life again, what would you do differently? After a near-fatal family catastrophe and an unexpected romantic upheaval, Adelaide Buchwald finds herself catapulted into a summer of wild possibility, during which she will fall in and out of love a thousand times--while finally confronting the secrets she keeps, her ideas about love, and the weird grandiosity of the human mind. A raw, funny story that will surprise you over and over, Again Again gives us an indelible heroine grappling with the terrible and wonderful problem of loving other people.

I‘m not a huge fan of multi-verse stories in general, so I‘m not opining on that part. All the rest was deep, very deep, and well done.

🐳🐳🐳🐳 for Adelaide discovering love and forgiveness and sense of possibility. Lockhart‘s writing about people‘s inner selves is a note perfect gut punch.

Lockhart writes such strong stories about flawed people. It‘s a love story that isn‘t a love story. A family story. And a story about possibility.

What makes Lockhart's version of alternate universes so affecting is that it's not about Adelaide finding the right universe or making the right decision to save her romance. From early on, it's about Adelaide facing & coping w/her own unhappiness. I occasionally found the jumps between universes confusing to track; however, it's such a real portrayal, esp. of unhappiness as a teenager, that it touched my heart.

While it took me a while to get used to the quick rewinds indicating multiple possible interactions for situations, Lockhart‘s style is what makes this more than your average YA romance/ family tragedy. In addition to great characterization + parts that made me cry, there are additional hooks for me: multiple dogs + descriptions of contemporary art installations + a project for a set design class. A surprising #audiobook narrated by Tavia Gilbert.

“Tragedy is a pinnacle of human experience,” Kaspian Lee went on. “Not that any of us want to experience it. But we like to think about tragedy quite a lot. That‘s why Shakespeare wrote tragedies, and the Greeks. It‘s why we like Fool for Love, the doomed romance.”

The teenager in this novel wonders what her mother means every time she adds a 🐳 emoji to her communication. Finally, she asks. Communication skills!

Megabooks What did it mean? 4y
Lindy @Megabooks It didn‘t mean anything! Her mother just wanted to add something cheerful to her text messages. Something to make her daughter smile. 4y

With the “thousands” of possibilities offered in this story, it was too hard to care about any of them because any of the possibilities could be something else so there was nothing to risk and no reason to care also hard because I truly didn‘t like any of the characters in any of their lives

#MayWrapUp! I managed to sneak in one last book in the nick of time, which is why so late. A lot of books I enjoyed this month! Anything you've particularly liked?

AlaMich I loved Longbourne even though I had not yet read PnP when I read it. It was a great book on its own merits. I did get around to reading PnP soon after, however. 😊 4y
