The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Novels (Slipcased Edition)
The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Novels (Slipcased Edition) | Arthur Conan Doyle
18 posts | 8 read | 8 to read
The four classic novels of Sherlock Holmes, heavily illustrated and annotated with extensive scholarly commentary, in an attractive and elegant slipcase. The publication of Leslie S. Klinger's brilliant new annotations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's four classic Holmes novels in 2005 created a Holmes sensation. Klinger reassembles Doyle's four seminal novels in their original order, with over 1,000 notes, 350 illustrations and period photographs, and tantalizing new Sherlockian theories. Inside, readers will find: A Study in Scarlet (1887)a tale of murder and revenge that tells of Holmes and Dr. Watson's first meeting; The Sign of Four (1889)a chilling tale of lost treasure...and of how Watson met his wife; The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901)hailed as the greatest mystery novel of all time; and The Valley of Fear (1914)a fresh murder scene that leads Holmes to solve a long-forgotten mystery. Whether as a stand-alone volume or as a companion to the short stories, this classic work illuminates the timeless genius of Conan Doyle for an entirely new generation.

“[He] sat upon the floor like some strange Buddha, with crossed legs, the huge books all around him, and one open on his knees.“

Is this not the usual position in which one reads 🧘🏻📖🤷🏻‍♂️

Bookwomble Story, "The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger". Illustration by Frank Wiles from the Strand Magazine, February 1927. 6mo
julesG Probably not at the times of ACD. I think it was more of a "straight wingback chair" period, but one can sit cross-legged in a chair, too. ? 6mo
Bookwomble @julesG I'm presently sat cross-legged on a sofa with this huge book open upon my knees - it seems a natural position 😄 I'd love a straight wingbacked chair though: perhaps a Christmas present to self! 🤔 (edited) 6mo

Three months and 900 pages later, I have worked my way through the beautiful annotated Sherlock Holmes edition of the 4 novels. There are lots of different illustrations and annotations. Some Sherlockian ideas are really out there, but I had the feeling that Klinger toned down the weird, compared to the Baring-Gould editions. One book down, two to go!

And the collected four Holmes novels...

vivastory A thing of beauty! 6y
saresmoore @vivastory I‘ve been on the lookout for these editions for about a year now. They are tough to find! 6y
Bookwomble The cover illustration of Holmes holding a harpoon (which he was using to experiment on pig carcasses) is by Frederick Dorr Steele for The Adventure of Black Peter, first published in Collier's Weekly in 1904. I'm stuck by how similar this is to Jeremy Brett's incarnation of Holmes - by far my favourite portrayal of the Great Detective. 6y
Bookwomble @saresmoore This made me look at when they were published, as I got them not long thereafter, and I'm shocked to see that they came out in 2005! I can't believe I've had them for over 10 years!!! 6y

As usual I'm managing to sneak in one more book this month. I do think that the longer Holmes stories are weaker than the short ones, primarily because of the long expository flashbacks, Sir Arthur, just give me the deductions! Even so The Hound of the Baskervilles is wonderful and so are parts of the others. An extra joy are the annotations; fun, detailed, odd & covering all kinds of obsessive Holmesian theories and debates #AnnotatingSherlock

julesG @Sarah83 is looking at the book and I am admiring the crochet. 😀 6y
JacqMac Very nice! 6y
Moray_Reads @julesG my mum made the blanket and I made the cushion cover. There's something particularly cozy about crochet 6y
Sarah83 @julesG you are right. But you also took a glimpse at the book. 😉 6y
saresmoore Lovely. 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore @ReadingSusan @JacqMac Soon it will be too cold to sit by that draughty old window, even with a hot water bottle! 6y
saresmoore You know, I‘ve never experienced anything like that. I‘m adding it to my list of reasons to relocate. 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore Draughty it might be but it can't really stand up against hurricanes! (And this 19th century window certainly wouldn't!) 6y
UwannaPublishme Now that's cozy! 😊👍🏻 6y
Suet624 I love your hot water bottle cover. Last winter I discovered the joy of a hot water bottle in bed by my feet. Delicious and oh so warming. 6y

In contrast with the rather dubious connection in the last footnote it's interesting to know that ACD was an active campaigner against draconian Victorian divorce laws #AnnotatingSherlock

You learn something every day. Joseph Swan held a British patent for the carbon filament bulb in 1878 while Edison's was patented in 1879. As part of a copyright settlement Swan became a partner in the British works and the lightbulbs were called "Ediswans" until Edison bought Swan out. Ediswan is often "corrected" in the Hound of the Baskervilles but ACD was right! #AnnotatingSherlock

The experts take issue with one of the canon's most famous lines. I agree with Mr Clyne, it's obviously about dramatic effect "the footprints of a giant Cocker spaniel", indeed! ?? #AnnotatingSherlock

I love contrasting all the different illustrations in this volume. On the left a German interpretation from 1903 and on the right the definitive work of Sidney Paget for the Stand Magazine 1901. Both show the meeting of Dr Mortimer with Holmes and Watson in the Hound of the Baskervilles

Sarah83 😍😍😍 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That looks like a great book! I bet @KVanRead would love it too. 7y
Moray_Reads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it's my favourite edition. The annotations are amazing 7y

KVanRead @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I would! Love seeing all the different illustrations from over the years in one place. 7y
Moray_Reads @KVanRead this edition might be for you. Lots of illustrations from around the world, contemporary photographs, exhaustive footnotes on plot-points, Victorian society and Conan Doyle's... sorry, WATSON'S narrative inconsistencies. I love it 🔎🎩 7y
Moray_Reads @KVanRead there's also a two volume set for the short stories! 7y

Have you ever wondered just how serious Sherlock Holmes was? Never fear, someone has broken down the statistics for you! (I love this annotated edition, it's thorough to the point of insanity) #AnnotatingSherlock

LeahBergen It sounds like it! 😂 7y
saresmoore Gasp! Moray, if my family asks, I will blame you for the sheer length of my Christmas wishlist this year. 7y
mjdowens Can someone show me what "twinkle" looks like??? 7y

Moray_Reads @saresmoore I can't recommend these enough. I particularly like that the annotations are "in-world" so they're fully invested in the lovely tradition that Holmes and Watson were real. Which they obviously were *cough* 7y
Moray_Reads @mjdowens I think of it as a lively sparkle in the eyes and maybe a hint of a smile 😉 7y
saresmoore OBVIOUSLY 7y
Sarah83 So great.🤗 How many books do you have about Sherlock? 7y
Moray_Reads @Sarah83 maybe 40-50 books? Unfortunately most of them are still stored at my parents' house so I only have a handful in my flat 😧 7y
Sarah83 Have you seen my Sherlock shelf? 😍 I think, I have quite as many as you. 😍 7y
Moray_Reads @Sarah83 I have loved your many Sherlock posts! They make me miss my own collection 7y
Sarah83 Can't you bring your Sherlock books to your flat? 7y
Moray_Reads @Sarah83 I don't have space for them but maybe it's time to rescue some of my favourites! 7y
Sarah83 Mhm. Or you take pictures, so you can look at them any time you want to. 7y
JazzFeathers I realised he's not the stern fellow we're accustomed to think about when l read a few of his short stories la summer. Should we blame thr actors? 7y
Moray_Reads @JazzFeathers I don't know. My favourite Holmes is Jeremy Brett and he plays the character with plenty of humour and even Benedict Cumberbatch's high-functioning sociopath version has a laugh or two. 7y

After some coy hints on A Study in Scarlet Sherlock Holmes' #cocaine use is revealed, the famous seven percent solution as named on the next page. I adore these editions, the annotations are exhaustive and fascinating with general historical context for issues like cocaine use as well as discussions of its place in the Holmes canon #rockinmay

JazzFeathers Looks a woderful edition 😍 7y
Moray_Reads @JazzFeathers it's a real goldmine of information including differences in UK/US editions, illustrations from around the world and fun speculation about Holmes' part in history if he had been real - why didn't he catch Jack the Ripper? (Or did he?) 😉 7y
Sarah83 looks so gorgeous 😍😍 7y

Cleared out some shelf space for the kittens to use as a hangout... So far only Tilney has taken the bait. Whatever keeps them from pulling the books off the shelves is a win (hopefully it lasts). 😸
