The six books I plan on reading next week. So many books, so little time. Therefore I am trying to plan my reading better so I get it all done! Also decided I have to read at least one book a week that is not crime!

Tove_Reads @andrew65 I think 5/6 of these books are part of your reading repertoire as well. Finally getting to read Dee Valley and Echoes, which I should have read ages ago. 2y
Andrew65 Read 3 of them, need to read two others 9Anderson and McCleave) but don‘t know the Roger Stelljes series. Always love Maeve Binchy.

I am reading more historical fiction recently, but need to read more books from other genres. Still not found anyone to replace Maeve Binchy but am enjoying our Kristin Hannah reads.
2y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Have you read Sarah Lark‘s New Zealand series? Reading it right now 2y

Tove_Reads @andrew65 Recently read mostly crime, but some his fiction, nonfiction as well. Have been bad at finding good historical fiction lately 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘ve found a couple of new historical fiction authors recently, but depends on what sort of historical fiction you like. Very rarely read non fiction these days.

Sarah Lark is new to me, will have to check the series out.
2y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I enjoy long family sagas, old timey countryside stories, exotic locations and unique stories, John Boyne, Ken Follett and Susan Howatch kind of historical fiction. No WWll 2y

I finished my #doublespin book for June! A slow reading month, but I did get a bingo, a few days late. @TheAromaofBooks
I‘ve had this one on my shelf for many years & am glad I read it. As usual, Binchy weaves a story about a small Irish town & its characters over a long period. Clare is from a poor family but is determined to get an education. I wish Binchy had resolved Clare‘s issue w/ her degree at the end. I hope Clare achieved her goals.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3y

Part 4

Question 4 of 4

cobwebmoth I hated the ending. I don't want Clare to go back to David. His attitude was despicable. 5y
EadieB She should have given up on David and focused on her schooling. She could get someone to help her with the baby while she finished school. Then she could focus on the rest of her life and not feel so trapped. 5y
JacqMac Yes @cobwebmoth and @EadieB She should have taken the baby and went back to school. David doesn‘t deserve her and she shouldn‘t sacrifice her happiness for him. 5y

Part 4

Question 3 of 4

cobwebmoth I didn't like the way things ended for Gerry. It just felt like such a sad waste. I realize that Clare was relieved to be rid of his advances, but I felt like her reaction was a bit much. 5y
EadieB Gerry put too much pressure on Clare and Gerry wouldn‘t take no for an answer. His business was failing and he was not in a good frame of mind when he died. Clare had too much to deal with at the time of Gerry‘s death and she was just relieved not to have Gerry pressuring her anymore. 5y
JacqMac I didn‘t like what happened to Gerry either @cobwebmoth and I agree that her reaction was overblown. I did like that Clare reassured his sister that it was an accident and not a suicide. 5y

cobwebmoth I don't think so. But I don't think she belongs with David either. 5y

JacqMac Nope. Gerry wouldn‘t have been a good choice. Clare needs her studies. 5y

Part 4

Question 1 of 4

cobwebmoth In her mind she hadn't planned on being a mother until she had an established career and was in her thirties, so I don't think it's surprising that she would struggle with being a young mother. 5y
EadieB I think young mothers experience a lot of hormone changes and taking care of a baby 24/7 is very draining. Having time for your husband does not always happen. Could be she was experiencing some type of depression especially since her life plans were not going in the direction they were suppose to. 5y
JacqMac I agree with you both @cobwebmoth and @EadieB It was a combination of things. Depression brought on by life changes and by hormones and the pressures of being a new mom. 5y

I found this one a lot harder to get through than other Maeve Binchy, an author whose books I love - although much of this may be down to work commitments. Overall it was a very enjoyable book, but did feel disappointed by the end - almost felt as if there wasn‘t an end to the book. I wanted to know what happened next! No, I needed to know what happened next!

EadieB @Andrew65 All of her books seem to leave you hanging at the end. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB True! 5y
JacqMac @EadieB @Andrew65 I agree. She ended her a lot of her books that way. I don‘t mind so much. In a way it makes the characters even more real for me. 5y
See All 12 Comments
EadieB @JacqMac it‘s just the way she writes so I guess we just have to get used to it! @andrew65 (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I felt this one left things even more up in the air than some others. @JacqMac 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I kind of think that one could probably put together that the marriage was doomed and Clare should get out of it as men who have affairs usually don‘t stop unless they make a new commitment which is possible but Clare would have to learn to trust again. @JacqMac 5y
JacqMac @Andrew65 @EadieB I remember feeling that way about Scarlet Feather. Maybe she heard, because then she wrote minding Frankie and it kinda helped. Lol 5y
EadieB @JacqMac I haven‘t read Scarlet Feather but I have read Minding Frankie. @Andrew65 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Things weren‘t right for Clare! She needed a new Beginning away from Castlebay. 5y
Andrew65 @JacqMac @EadieB I like the way some people reappear in other books. 5y
CarolynM I cried a lot when I read this book. I really felt for Clare. 5y
Andrew65 @CarolynM I agree, someone with such great hope to end up trapped and not being able to achieve her potential. 😢 5y

Part 3

Question 4 of 4

cobwebmoth Heartbreak. 5y
JacqMac I don‘t think Clare is going to be happy. Love can only fix so much. I think David is going to be too busy to notice when things start to go bad. 5y
EadieB I think their relationship can be patched up if they are both in agreement and David changes his ways. They also need to get away from Molly. 5y

Part 3

Question 3 of 4

cobwebmoth I don't think that Sean had ever really considered the reality of being back in his hometown. He had been gone so long that he had romanticized it in his mind. And facing the music after that long would have been difficult for everyone involved. 5y
JacqMac I think he forgot what a tiny town is like. And that without his mom or his priesthood, he really had no connections or friends left. Angela just might have made the right decision by keeping it all a secret. 5y
EadieB I think Angela made too much out of Sean‘s leaving the priesthood. It ended up not being a big deal. I think Sean left quickly because there really wasn‘t anybody left for him in his hometown since he was gone too long. 5y

cobwebmoth I don't think he had any right to be that angry, but I do think the marriage is doomed. 5y
JacqMac No, he had no right to be so angry. But I also think the marriage might be doomed. 5y
EadieB Gerry cannot have a claim on Clare. A relationship is a two-way agreement. I also think Clare will end up not happy with her marriage to David. 5y

Part 3

Question 1 of 4

cobwebmoth I was so disheartened when I got to that part. I felt it would be an end to all of Clare's plans. I think it was "right" for David to go back to his father, but I don't think Clare can ever be happy there, especially with the odious Mrs. Power nearby. 5y
JacqMac This made me sad, too @cobwebmoth I don‘t think Clare will go back to her studies. And I think she is going to be really bored in that little town. 5y
EadieB It certainly did affect Clare‘s plans. I think David‘s change of plans is good for him. He will get lots of experience in his home town. 5y

cobwebmoth I'm afraid that it will derail all of Clare's plans.😔 5y

JacqMac I don‘t know. I‘m hoping David will be supportive. 5y
TheBookHippie @cobwebmoth I have that same fear! 5y

Question 4 of 5

EadieB I think it will tear David away since his parents do not want David to be with Clare and the same with Clare‘s family. They will not be happy either. 5y
JacqMac Yes and yes. I think that‘s the way it‘s supposed to happen, though. 5y
TheBookHippie I think it's intentional to happen ...yes and yes. 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie @EadieB @JacqMac I agree totally, college does change you and makes you grow away from your family. I was the first person in my family to ever go to college and afterwards felt like the interloper / outsider in my own family. However to be fair I always felt different and like an outsider in my family (for some reason). I consider myself to have a large number of autistic traits so do wonder if this may be the reason! 🤷‍♂️ 5y

Question 3 of 5

cobwebmoth I don't think any of these young men are right for Clare, but I like Gerry better than David. 5y
EadieB I like David more than Gerry. Gerry is nothing but a womanizer and when he finds out that he‘s not going to get Clare then I think Gerry will use the Tommy information against Clare. 5y
JacqMac Nope. I think Gerry would break her heart. Once she isn‘t a challenge anymore, he will go out and find a new one. David will be safe and stable and treat her with respect. 5y
TheBookHippie @EadieB I'm with you. David. But Im more with @cobwenmoth none are good enough. 5y
Andrew65 @cobwebmoth @EadieB @JacqMac @TheBookHippie Gerry isn‘t right for her, Gerry may think he loves her but Clare definitely doesn‘t love him. I agree that david will be a safer bet for her but feel she should be looking beyond Castlebay. 5y

Part 2
Question 1 of 5

cobwebmoth I was a little surprised that she would be the one to get pregnant, considering how protective Gerry was. But I think Gerry became more occupied with his business, so maybe he wasn't paying as much attention to his sister at that point. 5y
EadieB That definitely was a surprise since Gerry was like her watchdog! 5y
JacqMac I wasn‘t surprised. It‘s never good to be too sheltered. You don‘t get to learn how life works. And when you break free, you tend to go all out. 5y
TheBookHippie @JacqMac always!!!! Too much control leads to this a lot unfortunately . 5y
Andrew65 @JacqMac @TheBookHippie Agree Totally, not a great surprise. Once out of this ‘total protection‘ often take things to far whilst got that freedom. Found it quite rich what Gerry was doing with other girls / women whilst he was ‘protecting‘ Fiona. 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Angela is caring too much about what other people think. I think she needs to tell her mom. I think it will be a shock to her mom but I think her mom would like to see her son and family instead of them staying away for so long. I think in time people would get over his leaving the priesthood when they see how happy he is. Hiding the situation is worse than him leaving the priesthood. Truth is always better than lying. 5y
cobwebmoth I feel bad that Angela is caught in the middle of everything, but I do agree that she cares too much about the opinions of others. I don't think she trusts people, so she doesn't give them enough credit. 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I was surprised by their reaction as they didn‘t seem to give Clare any encouragement. It seemed like that were more concerned about what other people would think about Clare entering the competition. I can see why Clare didn‘t want to tell them in the first place. 5y
cobwebmoth Yes, I was surprised. I was very apprehensive about her telling them. I breathed a sigh of relief when they said she could go. 5y
JacqMac I was surprised. It didn‘t fit their narrative. But it is nice to see them supporting her. 5y
Andrew65 @cobwebmoth I was very surprised too. They gave no indication of valuing education and her learning, if anything they undermined it. I was surprised how they got totally behind this - I was expecting a very different reaction. 5y

EadieB I think Clare handled the situation just fine. Her father should not have corrected her so harshly as it seemed to make Clare look wrong. I think Molly was a little embarrassed when she found the money in her purse and I think that feeling of embarrassment is why she doesn‘t want to go back to the store. (edited) 5y
cobwebmoth I agree. No one likes to be proved wrong, but especially not someone as haughty as Mrs. Power. 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads The only change in Ireland that I can think of is divorce is now allowed. I think things have changed somewhat since the 1950‘s. I see more females working in professional positions which has caused a major change in family dynamics. I see men learning how to cook and do more of household chores such as; washing clothes, food shopping, and child care while their spouse is at work. Men are still being paid more than women. 5y
cobwebmoth I think some things have improved greatly since the 50s, but attitudes still really need improvement. I live in a rural community where many people still think that a woman should be a perfect housewife before anything else. 5y
EadieB @cobwebmoth I think it‘s more important to spend time with your children when they are young and let the housework go as the housework is always going to be there but the children grow up so fast and it‘s good to enjoy them when they are young. I think sometimes we put a lot of pressure on ourselves about how clean our house has to be. It‘s better to have happy well-cared for children. 5y
See All 8 Comments
cobwebmoth @EadieB Yes!❤ 5y
JacqMac I think the biggest change is that women now have more choices. It‘s ok to get an education. It‘s ok to get the job you want. It‘s ok to stay home and raise your children. 5y
EadieB @JacqMac I agree and that is a good thing! 5y
Andrew65 The book shows how much things have Changed, but still a way to go before we have total parity. @EadieB I see so many women who would like to spend more time with their children, especially in their early formative years but have to go back to work to afford the mortgage on the house. The picture overall is very variable. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 A working mother can still have quality time with her children on the weekends as long as she doesn‘t work overtime or too many long hours. Some women need time away form the children in order to feel like a real person again. Some women are prone to depression when they don‘t don‘t get dressed and get out of the house so it is all a matter of balance. 5y

This book is still available cheaply at Amazon if you want to join us. It is great fun! Come on you know you want to. If you plan to join us leave a comment below so I know to tag you in future.

In February we will be reading #CircleOfFriends

rubyslippersreads I‘m going to join in. 😊 5y
Andrew65 @Crewgurl when I look at Amazon.com (I am in the U.K.) it shows Echoes available for $1.27, and on Amazon.co.uk it is available for 99p. 5y
amiekreger I‘m joining in and I will try to keep up this time. 5y
Andrew65 @amiekreger Will be great to have you with us. 👍 Doesn‘t matter if you aren‘t able to keep up (life happens) but if you tag others in your answers we‘ll come back and discuss the book with you. 5y
Tove_Reads ☹️ My book never arrived. 5y
Tove_Reads Another copy is (hopefully) on the way, but won‘t make the buddy read. The library got me the ebook, but because I was meant to have my own copy I didn‘t place a hold, so... 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I blame that thing happening this spring in the 🇬🇧. It‘s a conspiracy against me! Tried to get about 15 books twice now... 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I stubbed my toes this morning I‘m sure that‘s Brexit‘s fault too. 😂 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I think the inflammation in my shoulder can be blamed on Brexit! 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘m blaming tonight‘s rain on it too! 👎 5y

Great news! Echoes is the next #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead which starts on 19th January, and at the moment Echoes is available for 99p in the U.K.! A great bargain and couldn‘t be a better time to pick it up. And in the US I‘ve just checked and it looks as if it is available for $1.26. A great time to join these fun buddy reads!

Just one complaint, Why portray it as Women‘s Ficition. I am not a woman but love her books!

ephemeralwaltz The term "woman's fiction" has got to go. Literature has no gender 5y
Andrew65 @ephemeralwaltz Totally agree! Feel same about the phrase chick lit! 5y
ephemeralwaltz @Andrew65 ugh! Don't even get me started 😂 5y
TrishB It‘s lazy marketing! 5y
Andrew65 @TrishB Totally! 5y

Last #spinepoetry, I promise! This was too much fun. Being partial to thrillers, I think this one's my favorite! 😱#marchintoreading

I'm late to #funfridayphoto but I couldn't let this one pass! My first adult books were by the spectacular Maeve Binchy. The first author I read with complicated Irish heroines who were vulnerable and brave and authentic ?? "She must be positive and cheerful, and never let them think her education and her hopes were a threat to them". Maybe she's not what I'd put at the foreground of feminism today but she blew my mind as a preteen ❤️
