A remarkable, sweeping historical novel based on the incredible true life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas, a free woman of color who rose from slavery to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful landowners in the colonial West Indies. Born into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Monserrat, Doll bought her freedom--and that of her sister and her mother--from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur, merchant, hotelier, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent. Vanessa Riley's novel brings Doll to vivid life as she rises above the harsh realities of slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life: a restless shipping merchant, Joseph Thomas; a wealthy planter hiding a secret, John Coseveldt Cells; and a roguish naval captain who will later become King William IV of England. From the bustling port cities of the West Indies to the forbidding drawing rooms of London's elite, Island Queen is a sweeping epic of an adventurer and a survivor who answered to no one but herself as she rose to power and autonomy against all odds, defying rigid eighteenth-century morality and the oppression of women as well as people of color. It is an unforgettable portrait of a true larger-than-life woman who made her mark on history.

Born enslaved on #Montserrat, Dorothy works her way to freedom and eventually a business empire stretching across multiple nations. Based on a real person, this novel looks across Dorothy‘s entire life. It‘s long but worth the time. I enjoyed this.

#ReadingAmericas2023 Also works for #Dominica #Greneda #Guyana

It took me a while to get into this book, but by the end I was so glad I stuck with it. Sad to say I knew next to nothing about the history of slavery in the Caribbean, and this book brought it to life. Thanks @Texreader for bringing this book to my attention.

My May choices for #TitlesAndTunes

I picked Island Queen- kind of a literal choice. My song is Royals by Lourde. Queen—>Royals and it‘s a good song to listen to with the windows down when you‘re near the water.

Cinfhen I really enjoyed Island Queen and I love the pairing- clever 👑💖 2y

Based on the true life of Dorothy (Doll) Kirwan Thomas, born a slave in #Montserrat, she worked countless years to buy her (& her family‘s) freedom to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in the Caribbean. Repeatedly raped by her white brother, surviving multiple rebellions, saving a sister from auction, her beginnings were so harsh. She is written as a very real person, with her past very much shaping how she approached life. ⬇️

Texreader I would have liked a bit less about the many men in her life, although they were all clearly very important in her life. I would have liked much more of her business building, which was made all the more difficult for a freed black woman. The coverage of that aspect of her business life developed more at the end, especially when she had to buy slaves herself (she owned the most where she lived). The most impactful part of the book is her ⬇️ 2y
Texreader view of slavery from a tender age of five when she hadn‘t quite grasped that she was “owned.” As she grew up and through her life her views on slavery also grew up. It was eye-opening and poignant. #Dominica

The lawyer in me loved this quote, when the MC insisted on a marriage contract despite her daughter‘s insistence they were truly in love.

In my practice, a contract is always preferable to the handshake.

Reading this big one while visiting some islands kept me absorbed in the story. It isn't a light-hearted read, but I read it quick enough anyway. I learned plenty of things that I didn't know about a woman I was not aware of before. This story about strength, resiliency, and womanhood is a must read.

This is the only book I recorded in September. A 600 page chunkster, it was interesting as historical fiction about Dorothy "Doll' Thomas, the wealthiest free black woman in the Caribbean during colonial times.

This was a fascinating story about true story of a black woman that raised herself up from slave to one of the wealthiest & powerful landowners/business women in the colonial West Indies. This is a very difficult story to read and there are many disturbing moments (see comments for content warnings). Though I didn‘t 100% love it, as it is not that kind of story, I am glad I read it. 4⭐️

Dorothy Kirwan Thomas managed great achievements in spite of her tough beginnings. I love how Riley pieced together accounts of her life and created this historical fiction novel that gets inside Dorothy‘s head. We get to see her thoughts, feel her repugnance for the system she was born into, and also see her reasons when she‘s forced to do things she finds personally reprehensible. Though a fictional account, she‘s a woman worth learning about.

Living in the late 18th/early 19th century in the West Indies, Dorothy Kirwan (later Dorothy Kirwan Thomas) freed herself, her mother, sister, and children from slavery and went on to become one of the wealthiest landowners in the islands. Riley used mainly secondhand accounts to piece together her story: her life, loves, triumphs and stumbles, the light, the dark, and the grey. She is a formidable woman, well worth getting to know.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I loved Dolly so much that I bought it on audible after I read it and listened to the story read by Adjoa Andoh. Her accent made the story feel like I was listening to Dorothy tell me her story over coffee. Truly a captivating book. You really have to meet Dolly.
