The New York Times bestselling author of Elevator Pitch and master of psychological suspense returns with a riveting thriller in which the possible heirs of a dying tech millionaire are mysteriously being eliminated, one by one. "Linwood Barclay is a stone-cold pro." -- #1 New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill Tech millionaire Miles Cookson has more money than he can ever spend, and everything he could dream of--except time. He has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and there is a fifty percent chance that it can be passed on to the next generation. For Miles, this means taking a long hard look at his past . . . Two decades ago, a young, struggling Miles was a sperm donor. Somewhere out there, he has kids--nine of them. And they might be about to inherit both the good and the bad from him--maybe his fortune, or maybe something much worse. As Miles begins to search for the children he's never known, aspiring film documentarian Chloe Swanson embarks on a quest to find her biological father, armed with the knowledge that twenty-two years ago, her mother used a New York sperm bank to become pregnant. When Miles and Chloe eventually connect, their excitement at finding each other is overshadowed by a series of mysterious and terrifying events. One by one, Miles's other potential heirs are vanishing--every trace of them wiped, like they never existed at all. Who is the vicious killer--another heir methodically erasing rivals? Or is something even more sinister going on? It's a deadly race against time . . .

I‘d forgotten how much I liked this author and this was a cracker. Fast paced with multiple voices and threads there but still good characterisation and strong plot with more than a few twists along the way. A perfect read but for a sense of the ending being a little bit rushed.

kwmg40 I love Linwood Barclay too! I've even had the chance to meet him at book events, as he lives in my part of the world. 6mo

I'm 2 for 2 with this author and excited to keep plugging my way through his backlist! In this one, a wealthy man recently given a fatal genetic diagnosis decides to try and find his biological offspring (the result of a long ago sperm donation). But as he tracks them down it's clear someone else is too... because the people on the list are starting to meet foul play, one by one. I enjoyed the ride and give extra points for plot originality! 4⭐️

This is the second Barclay that I have read & thoroughly enjoyed. Although I saw a few of the twists, I was genuinely surprised by several others. Implausible at times, but a solid thriller. Will definitely be reading more by Barclay.

Hooked_on_books I agree! I discovered him recently and really like him, too. 2y

1) Started it this afternoon after my booster & now 300 pages in. Implausible? Absolutely. A total blast? Definitely.
2) I've used Goodreads for the past 5+ years but have recently become really dissatisfied with it. I honestly don't trust it as a long term tracking method, so I'm weighing my options.
3) The Sword of Truth. It was mentioned in a BookTube video that I was watching last night.

Leftcoastzen I‘ve been keeping track of books I‘ve read over the years in blank books . Date , title , author. No ratings or reviews. And , I wish I had started earlier. 2y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen In composition books or do you have a preferred journal type? 2y
BarbaraBB For a catalogue LIbraryThing has been my favorite for years and never disappoints. 2y

Liz_M I also love the LibraryThing catalog. I get to choose/upload the exact covers I want, I can customize categories and tags, and then search my to-read collection by a combination of tags. It's not visually pretty, but it is super flexible. 2y
vivastory @BarbaraBB @liz_m I thought of using Library Thing. If I keep using a digital only tracker I'll probably switch to LT, but I also want to start a paper journal. 2y
Leftcoastzen I thought about some standardized book , but I started in a little James Dean spiral bound , decided random blank book was the way I was gonna go . 2y

I read this book as it was recommended by Stephen King's Twitter account. My first time reading this author and I really enjoyed the plot along with the twists and turns. Enjoyable characters and the book moved along well. I'd read this author again!!

While I felt this thriller had few surprises (and I think the publisher‘s description gives far too much away), I still enjoyed the ride. I like Barclay‘s voice and bits of humor. If you‘ve liked his other books, I think you‘ll like this one!

I really enjoy Linwood Barclay‘s books. He writes well and I love the mystery thriller aspect of his chosen genre. Although I figured out the big mystery before the end I still didn‘t see half of the true ending.

I love Linwood Barclay's books and this one did not disappoint. It's a race against time and tech millionaire Miles Cookson has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Two decades ago, Miles was a sperm donor. He thinks he may have nine children and he would like them to inherit his money. Chloe Swanson embarks on a quest to find her biological father. Her mother used a New York sperm bank to become pregnant 22 years ago.

EadieB Miles and Chloe eventually connect but a series of mysterious and terrifying events shows that there is a vicious killer trying to erase his heirs. Who is this person or is something more sinister going on? This plot kept me glued to the book until the very explosive end. I enjoyed the characters and found them believable. Barclay is an excellent storyteller and has proved it with this one. 3y

I have been reading for decades and I just fully realized I hate Prologues. Ill read them then be slightly annoyed that the scene will basically show up again. I have started skipping them so nothing about the plot is given away.

This was fast-paced and thrilling with like able heroes and an interestingly familiar sounding main villain.. 👍🏻 I haven‘t read everything by Barclay, but the ones I have I love!

I'm a big fan of Linwood Barclay and this story did not disappoint either. Its well written, detailed and creepy. The plot is steady but building to a cleverly, dramatic ending. There are some brilliant twists along the way, some I guessed and some I didn't. Chloe was my favourite character along with Charise, she was brilliant. Gotta love a strong female character who can kick buttr. #netgalley 5*

rabbitprincess Can‘t wait! Linwood is an auto-buy author for me 😄 3y
