From Blood and Ash (Blood And Ash Series Book 1)
From Blood and Ash (Blood And Ash Series Book 1) | Jennifer L. Armentrout
A Maiden Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppys life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers. A Duty The entire kingdoms future rests on Poppys shoulders, something shes not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden. A Kingdom Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel. Hmm, I liked this-enough to read over 400 pages of it, but it fell short for me. It felt a little to juvenile to be fantasy for adult readers but way to adult for YA. The content was dark and violent but the MC was so immature that it was off putting and insincere. The world was interesting, I did like appreciate where she was going with it and I may read book 2 at some point. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks This one was a miss for me as well. I found the MC to be just so self-absorbed. 1y
emz711 Yeah I'm a little over 400 pages, got to the twist which I guessed was coming. She has a different book that just came out that I feel like is better but can't figure out why. The plot is almost exactly the same but way sexier. 9mo

A must-read for fans of ACOTR. After book one, this feels like a great series, as BookTok has claimed. The first half is a little slow as the world & character building is the focus. The last half of the book has a good pace, of course the smut makes an appearance too. I enjoyed this read & will continue with the series.

BethM I always get nervous when books are compared to my favorites. I feel like I rarely end up enjoying them 2y
JaneyWaneyB @BethM this is very much the same theme as ACOTR girl meets boy, boy is mysterious and is he what he seems, girl falls for boys...oh what is this a lie? If you like ACOTR this will be a comfortable familiar read but probably better series out there 2y

Definitely a lot of character development in this one, but by the end, I was completely invested. I've since started book 2 and cannot get enough. Yes there kind-of-spicy scenes, not the greatest, but... the story line is... **chefs kiss**

My sisters and I started a book club just for us. This was pick #2. If my sister hadn't picked it, I don't think I would've picked it up. I like pretty much all genres, but I read fantasy less often. I ended up really enjoying it. Anxiously waiting to read book 2 in the series, because we said we wouldn't move on until we have our book club discussion for this one. One sister isn't finished yet... 😕

Here is my #june2022wrapup if it wasn't for the blood and ash series...I would only have one. But that one is seriously long! Lol
3 audio books. All three are female authors. My favorite was from blood and ash. The other books after are slightly boring at times. I have completely stalled on the newest outlander book. I had to stop for fear of my life lol it was boring me to death🤷🏻 I will eventually gather my courage and go back to finish.

Well this one ended up being a pretty soft pick for me, borderline so-so. There was a lot about it that I did enjoy, and I did stick it out through all 613 pages, but this book was way too long for what it actually accomplished, and the way it ended meant that I felt like I had read an incredibly long prologue. A lot more sex than I was anticipating, to the point where it kind of felt like getting laid was all Poppy really cared about. I haven't⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) decided if I'm going to read book 2 or not (it's on reserve at the library). I know I complained a lot during this review, but I did actually overall enjoy the story, it just needed to be a LOT shorter.

TheAromaofBooks I think what really annoyed me is that Poppy supposedly really believes in her religion/that she is “chosen“ yet basically decides that her getting to have sex is more important than the lives of the people supposedly depending on her staying “pure.“ I get why she felt rebellious, but it made her come across as very shallow, especially since she rarely complained about any of her other restrictions. I'm also not a fan of the “your life isn't ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) truly fulfilled until you've had sex“ rhetoric, which was very strong throughout this story. There could have been an emphasis on a lot of the other freedoms that Poppy was missing, but sex became this borderline-obsession, the ONE THING that Poppy HAD TO EXPERIENCE in order to be a FREE WOMAN that really dragged the whole story down for me. 3y

TheSpineView Great job, especially considering it was a chunkster and not the best book on the shelf. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView - I'm kind of a bad reviewer because I tend to go on and on about the parts that annoy me when I actually enjoyed the book enough overall to give it a pick 😂 3y
TheSpineView @TheAromaofBooks I do that too.🙃 3y
Andrew65 Great 👏👏👏 3y
LitStephanie I agree it was a bit long. I really liked the book but agree with your criticisms. It gets bogged down sometimes, but I found that just when I started to really get bored, some exciting monster or battle would live things up. If you are annoyed by the focus on sex in this book, you will probably not like the second one. The second one is all about the love story ad nauseum. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @LitStephanie - That's good to know... I actually planned to read this one in January so I've had the 2nd book on reserve since then and still hasn't come in. So I guess I will cross the “should I read the next book“ bridge whenever it actually arrives! 😂 There was a lot about this book I enjoyed, so odds are probably good that I'll still wade through the next one lol 3y
LitStephanie When I made that comment, I was conflating the first two books and forgot there is a third, oops. The second one does have a lot of sex but also a lot of action and plot progression. I enjoyed it as much as the first. The third one tried my patience with the emphasis on love, love, love. Curious to see your review of the second one if you read it. 3y

This book definitely had good moments but it won't be a stand out of my year. I enjoyed the storyline and character development overall. The writing was mediocre. There was a lot of fluff including dialogue; it could have easily been told in 400 pages. I am interested to know what happens next but would rather continue reading the books that have been sitting on my shelves. *Looking to make new book friends?Join LiterALLy BOOKiSh on Facebook!

TheAromaofBooks I'm about 2/3 through this one and feel the same way - there is a LOT of padding in this book and I'm not sure how committed I'm going to be to reading several more 600pg books in this series! 3y

This one was a quick easy read, I wanted some high fantasy romance to distract myself during a difficult week. And this one ticked all the boxes of the genre-a beautiful tortured heroine, a dark and handsome hero, a secret, high stakes. Romance was ok, a little too spicy for YA, perhaps. The storyline is somewhat generic, not much happened for about 65%, yet pacing felt ok. I will probably keep reading, it kept me entertained enough.

Final blurb for this book—
It‘s been a couple of weeks since I finished the book and it still lingers. I‘ve read different things since then and find myself comparing characters and how I felt with the characters and feelings the book evoked. A book well done is when it lingers. I wish the books weren‘t so expensive or I would buy the next one faster.

50% in and not a lot of things are happening. It‘s an easy read, but the plot needs to hurry up and unfurl.

I initially picked up this book thinking it was more of a sexy-times story. Wasn‘t very much of that, but I got sucked into the story, of two kingdoms and magic and werewolves and vampires and sword fighting and on and on. Will absolutely be reading the next one!

blurb
EstherBluewood

Made it to 476, chapter 40. It‘s nearing the end of the book and, as a true beginning to a series, I have way more questions than answers. This book hasn‘t been what I expected and, while definitely being sexy, it wasn‘t the complete wildly sexual liberation I expected. Poppy has been liberated in many ways on her journey (see my previously posted quotes) but we are discovering that truth does not equal freedom. Not even love is free.

quote
EstherBluewood

It was strange to know myself and be so certain when I‘d spent so long not knowing myself.

quote
EstherBluewood

There is no way I could be in that bed with you and not be all over you in ten seconds flat. We wouldn‘t even make it to the bed before that happened. I know my limitations. I know that I‘m not a good enough man to remember my duty and yours or that I‘m so incredibly unworthy of you it should be a sin. Even knowing that, there is no way I wouldn‘t strip that robe from you and do exactly what I told you I‘d do when we were in the forest.

quote
EstherBluewood

Maiden or not, good or bad, Chosen or forsaken, I deserve to /live/ and to exist without being cloistered by rules I never agreed to.

blurb
EstherBluewood

I just finished page 325 and this is my realization. This book is about grief. It‘s about grieving for yourself and your loved ones. It‘s about grieving for what you lost and what you never had. It‘s about going over and over things that get taken away from you and what you can take back in your own hands to cope. It‘s about loneliness and how feeling pain is human. Feeling is human. Wanting is a necessity for all things living; feeling is human.

quote
EstherBluewood

“It‘s okay, you know?”
“What is?”
“Everything that you‘re feeling,” he said. “And everything you‘re not.”

blurb
EstherBluewood

225 pages in, just finished chapter 18. There‘s something nice about knowing that the hot love interest absolutely is attracted to your main character and so enamored that he can only compare her to a goddess in mortal form. It‘s a huge boost in confidence and let‘s you focus on other parts of their relationship/dynamic since you don‘t have to worry about if he likes you or not. Hawke is in the story and we are safer and more tantalized than ever.

blurb
EstherBluewood

A hundred pages in and I am here to tell you that this—so far— is not the fantasy book of sexual discovery that I was expecting. There is depth, plot, darkness, and the introduction to some friendly characters and intriguing societal questions to keep the story moving. Our steamy hero Hawke has not shown back up but in his place we have blood thirsty monsters, assassins, a growing body count, and a party! Everything I could want in a story!

I like fantasy, but it is really hard to find good writing that doesn't keep reminding me how unrealistic it is. This book has a good balance of believable characters and fantastical creatures. I couldn't put it down. It follows the adventures of a young woman who has been cloistered her whole life for some mysterious purpose by a religious cult as she tries to find freedom to do what she wants.
