Little Black Book of Stories
Little Black Book of Stories | Antonia S. Byatt
18 posts | 14 read | 103 to read
A new collection of stories from A. S. Byatt is always a winner, and this one takes an unexpected turn, bringing shivers as well as delights. Leaves rustle underfoot in a dark wood: two middle-aged woman walk into a forest, as they did when they were girls, confronting their fears and memories and the strange thing they saw in their childhood - or thought they saw - so long ago. A man meets the ghost of his living wife; a woman turns inexorably, but beautifully, to stone. A distinguished obstetrician and a young woman artist find they have sharply contrasting ideas about body parts, birth and death; an innocent member of an evening class harbours unexpected views on 'raw material'-The stories in this marvellous collection are by turns funny, spooky, sparkling and haunting. THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK holds its secrets, adding a dark quality to Byatt's famous skill in mixing folk and fairy tale with everyday life.

So, I feel that I maybe need to take a class on AS Byatt to fully comprehend what's going on here 😂 These are five dream-like tales, all rooted in art, mythology, and fantasy in one way or another which present the reader with unsettled characters facing their fears or uncertainties. I enjoyed 3 of these stories, and the other 2 were just okay for me. But Byatt is undoubtedly a master of language and character and I took my time with this one 👇

ephemeralwaltz ... as I enjoyed dipping in and out of her world inbetween my other current reads. Overall rating 3 ⭐, but very interested to explore her work further! Thanks again @Smarkies for this lovely copy. 6y
ephemeralwaltz And as I am trying to catch up on #SeptemberDanes prompts, I'm gonna mention that I've come down with the worst cold and #AllThatIWant is to get better so I can slip into a better mindset for reading this weekend 😭 @Cinfhen @Kalalatja 6y

GUYS! I forgot to mention that I got my first ever book-selling job!! 👏👏👏👏 It's just 10 days for a literature event/convention that's held every year in September in Barcelona but the bookstore that hired me is very well-known and I'm excited to be a part of the team. I feel like I'm getting the hang of it surprisingly quickly 😎😎 Now, after a long day, it's time to unwind before bed 🖤

Finally sat down to this one tonight. Byatt's prose seems to be meant to be read at night!- poetic and unsettling in a dream-like manner. I've only read "A Stone Woman" of hers but I'm looking forward to revisiting it. Thank you again @Smarkies! ?

Smarkies Hope you enjoy it! It looked like an interesting collection. 😁 6y

I was a little torn on the rating for this. Two of the stories "The Thing in the Forest" and "The Stone Woman" were wonderful, but the other three were merely okay. I highly recommend two of her other short story collections, The Matisse Stories and The Djinn in the Nightengale's Eye. #24in48

I'm all about #shortstories this month - and because of #scaretober they skew towards the ghostly or dark fairy tale variety. Pictured above are my #tbr short story collections. I'd like to give a special shout out to two collections I loved recently, but had to return to the library: Returning My Sister's Face and Slasher Girls & Monster Boys. #booktober

Kirstin Nice collection! 8y
brendanmleonard Fantastic stack!!! 8y
Laura317 I really want Slasher Girls and Monster Boys. Strangely, I think the cover is cute. 😜 8y

My first A.S. Byatt was an experience I would love to repeat. These stories are dark fairy tales, some w/magical realism. The stories cover topics such as WWII orphans, creatures in the woods, a stone woman, & more. Her storytelling is mysterious, foreboding, & haunting while bestowing commentary about society, relationships, & people. Eloquent yet precise, she never hesitates to keep you entranced. For fans of Kelly Link & Helen Oyeyemi. 🌒✨🗝

AWahle I just got this from the library! My interest was sparked by your previous post about this book. 8y
ohyeahthatgirl I love weird short stories and I love AS Byatt. I read Possession in a gender studies class and was hooked immediately. 8y
NovelGirl82 Anything you compare to Kelly Link draws me right in! Sold! 8y
BookishFeminist @NovelGirl82 I think you'll love AS Byatt then 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @ohyeahthatgirl I have yet to read Possession but it's on my TBR for February! I love weird short stories too and can't wait to read more Byatt! 8y
BookishFeminist @AWahle I hope you enjoy it! It's a nice little book, too so it won't take too long to read. 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook Yep I thought earlier OMG Stacie is going to have a field day today!! I hope you like this one but I bet you got tons of other options today 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @BkClubCare She is! I can't wait to read more by her now that I've opened Pandora's box 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @Lindy You're welcome! You probably would like this 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @chelseahannac Enjoy! I've heard a lot of byatt's stuff is similar too- can't wait to dig into more of her dark fairy tales 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @Seshat I plan on it! Possession is on my TBR for February since it's a romance 😀 8y
Lindy I don't remember the romance aspect of Possession but I do remember how strongly I engaged with the book. Like I was possessed! 8y
BookishFeminist @Lindy It may not be very romantic, who's to say since I haven't read it! It says it's a romance on the cover, so I guess I'll find out in February. 😀 8y
brendanmleonard This sounds amazing; ty again! 8y
BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard Anytime! I have a feeling AS Byatt will be a new fave author of mine. She seriously sounds right up your alley. 😀 8y

I really liked the first story and the rest were just ok. For me, personally, they were on the long side for short stories. I found myself skimming on a few of them. Just wasn't the book for me.

LitHousewife I may be blaspheming here, but I've not liked what I've tried to read by her at all. 8y
DiruVamp @LitHousewife the first story had a lot of promise but I didn't enjoy the rest at all. I was very disappointed. 8y

The perfect end to a long day of catching up on work. Late night Chinese food, wine, and reading. 📖🍽🍷

Spending some more time with AS Byatt tonight since these stories are amazing and it's her birthday today! ✨

#BookishBirthdays #BooksandFood #BooksandWine

shawnmooney I'm sure you're aware of the half-century feud between Byatt and her sister, Margaret Drabble? It's rather delicious, in a sad way; or is that sad, in a delicious way? 8y
Dragon Purple chopsticks are cool 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney No I'm not familiar with it! This is my first time reading Byatt & I've never heard of Margaret Drabble. 😱 I have some googling to do. 8y

BookishFeminist @Dragon Thanks! They're light sabers 🤓 8y
Dragon Wow @shawnmooney who knew they were sisters!! Gotta go and consult Google 8y
Dragon Even cooler😎 8y
LiteraryinPA Yum! Looks like a fun night! 8y
LeahBergen Yes, @shawnmooney ! It is delicious, isn't it? And I'm a huge fan of 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist @Dragon @LeahBergen Yes their feud - they haven't spoken to each other or had any contact in maybe 50 years? – is legendary. I know a bit about their feud but have yet to read any books by either of them! :-) 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney @LeahBergen @Dragon Oh shit!! The feud about which one of them could include their mother's tea set in her book!! That got REAL. 😂😂😂 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist It makes sense – you know, the Brits and their tea… :-) Their feud reminds me of another famous one, between Ann Landers and her twin sister Dear Abby. Fascinating! 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney DUDE do you have any more literary spats? I need to know more about these things! I need to live vicariously through these people for a bit 😂 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist Why don't you and I start one here on Litsy? It could make us famous! Oh wait, it usually sequences in the way around, doesn't it? :-) 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist Other literary feuds: John Irving vs. Tom Wolfe; Colson Whitehead vs. Richard Ford; Mary McCarthy vs Lillian Hellman; Dale Peck vs Rick Moody; Norman Mailer vs Gore Vidal; Gabriel García Márquez vs Mario Vargas Llosa; VS Naipaul vs Paul Theroux; Henry James vs HG Wells; Joseph Conrad vs DH Lawrence. The list is not exhaustive, nor did I have all of these feuds imprinted on my brain – Google helped. 8y
shawnmooney I see there's even been a couple of books, at minimum, written on the topic. 8y
Dragon @BookishFeminist @shawnmooney who knew that writers are so feisty ? 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney hahaha I bet the feud between Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal is juicy 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I'm pretty sure the Mailer – Vidal feud played out on the Dick Cavett show, and can be readily viewed on YouTube… :-) 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney YES! Hahaha also Truman Capote and Gore Vidal. I guess Gore got into feuds with everybody? 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney also I love how on the cover of the Literary Rivals book it's ___ v. ___ for the whole cover but then there is just SALMAN RUSHDIE v no one because its literally the entirety of Islam when Khomeini issued a fatwā against him 8y
LeahBergen This is awesome! I think everyone hated Truman Capote and some point 8y
LeahBergen Oops! Meant to tag @shawnmooney in the above, too 😀 8y
Zelma Omg, I ate hours ago and that Chinese food is making me hungry. I want some takeout and a pile of articles about literary feuds right now. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen @shawnmooney @Zelma LORD BYRON ON JOHN KEATS:
“Here are Johnny Keats‘ piss-a-bed poetry, and three novels by God knows whom… No more Keats, I entreat: flay him alive; if some of you don‘t I must skin him myself: there is no bearing the drivelling idiotism of the Mankin.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
8y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen This article, man. “[Ulysses is] the work of a queasy undergraduate scratching his pimples.” -Virginia Woolf on James Joyce 😂 no one throws shade like authors do! 8y
LeahBergen I know!! That one killed me! 8y
LeahBergen Had to edit that last one (late night typing 🙄) 8y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen Oof I know how that goes except it's all the time typing for me 🙄😂 8y
brendanmleonard Aw yea so glad #bookishbirthdays is a thing 👏😭🤘 8y
BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard Hahaha yep! Have you been using it too? I love that we're all giant nerds and look up authors bdays 😭🤓 8y
BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard Hahaha of course you have. I just clicked on the hashtag and it's totally your thing with me being completely unawares. I need to go to bed 😭 8y
LitHousewife This makes me hungry for dinner and it's just after 8am. Yum! 8y
Zelma @BookishFeminist @LeahBergen @shawnmooney Mark Twain is harsh! Digging up Jane Austen and hitting her with her own shin bone? Damn! 8y

Well my, this story got dark quickly. Seriously guys, these stories are so good. They are so dark and haunting and affecting. Her writing is magical yet leaves me with a pit in my stomach. 🌳🍃🤐

How have I not read AS Byatt before?

#ReadWomen #BritishBooks #ShortStories

KVanRead Have been meaning to read more of her forever. ❤️❤️❤️ 8y

DiruVamp Ok I'm officially hooked I need this one ASAP!! 8y
BookishFeminist @GinaAnderson Yes I'm beginning to learn she is wonderful! Do you have any favorites of hers? Aside from Possession? I definitely want to read more of her after this one! 8y
BookishFeminist @DiruVamp Yes you do! I swear I'm going to read her entire backlist when I'm done with this collection 💅🏼 8y
GinaAnderson @BookishFeminist In addition to Possession, I've read Babel Tower and The Children's Book. I liked Babel Tower better but both are very satisfying. 8y
Lani_bug What genre does she write? 8y
Caryl @BookishFeminist - Valentine's Day/February would be a great time to start Possession. I loved that book, and I want to read this one, too. 8y
KVanRead @BookishFeminist That would be perfect timing. 8y
BookishFeminist @Lani_bug Hard to describe- this is a book of fairy tales 8y
BookishFeminist @GinaAnderson Those both sound wonderful! Adding them to my ever-growing TBR. 8y
BookishFeminist @Caryl @KVanRead That's what I was thinking! I'm not huge on Valentine's Day but I use it as an excuse to read love stories and romance since I don't usually gravitate toward those type of books without an excuse, lol. 8y
KVanRead @BookishFeminist I'm not much of a romance reader either but Possession is the perfect one for book and history nerds🤓 8y
Caryl Ditto what @KVanRead said. It is such a cool book! 8y
BookishFeminist @KVanRead @Caryl That makes me even more excited. Thank you both! 8y

Back a Starbucks reading because I needs the coffee after staying up way too late last night to finish my book.

So excited for this little book of short stories! They read like dark, foreboding fairy tales, and so far remind me a bit of Kelly Link. Hoping this will be book 4 in the #BookishOlympics! Still #GoingforGold. 🏅

BekahB This one sounds interesting! I'm still hoping to get the gold for the #bookisholympics too. Not sure if my strategy to read multiple books at one time is going to work in my favor. I guess I'll find out! 😄 8y
DiruVamp Ohhhh this sounds good! 8y
