Cheer Up: Love and Pompoms | Crystal Frasier
21 posts | 21 read | 13 to read
A sweet, queer teen romance perfect for fans of Fence and Check, Please! Annie is a smart, antisocial lesbian starting her senior year of high school whos under pressure to join the cheerleader squad to make friends and round out her college applications. Her former friend BeeBee is a people-pleasera trans girl who must keep her parents happy with her grades and social life to keep their support of her transition. Through the rigors of squad training and amped up social pressures (not to mention micro aggressions and other queer youth problems), the two girls rekindle a friendship they thought theyd lost and discover there may be other, sweeter feelings springing up between them.

What a wonderful book. It packs a fantastic and heartfelt message in so few pages. Beebee is a quite trans girl who is active in cheerleading, Annie a hell on wheels personality that just wants to be left alone. However, Annie‘s anti-social personality might make it hard to get into college no matter how good her grades and test scores. So at her mother‘s behest, she joins cheerleading.

LibrarianRyan Annie and Beebee used to be friends, before Beebee transitioned. Their friendship is rekindled through cheer. Annie learns to be more social and get along with people, and Beebee leans to stand up for herself, not just to classmates who think they are doing the right thing, but also to her overprotective parents. This book is just so heartwarming. From page one to the end, a reader wants to know these girls, and be part of the squad. It is so 2y
LibrarianRyan reaffirming to see that the cheer mates, cheer for more than sports. They cheer for their teammates to be the best they can be, and to be themselves. There is everything to love about this book. EVERYTHING. 2y

This comic about former best friends (a cis lesbian and a trans girl) falling in love on the cheerleading team was cute but not quite developed enough. I wanted more of everything and less of a rushed story. I think a bit of editorial work to flesh out the characters, their relationships with each other, and their motivations would have gone a long way. That said, there are a lot of poignant moments, attention to nuance, and fun illustrations.

Blue is today‘s color and full of some great YA graphic novels. Cheer Up especially surprised me since I don‘t usually LOVE cheerleading books but this one was simply amazing not only for queer themes but body positive ones as well. Such a great book as were the rest of these ones.

4.75⭐ I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has some great commentary on how to be an ally and how to stand up for one's self, while also having a fabulous mix of humourous moments, loveable characters, and a sweet love story. I highly recommend it.

Longtime friends Bebe, who‘s trans, and Annie, who‘s a lesbian, shift into a different kind of relationship in this sweet romance set during their senior year of high school. Author Crystal Frasier is trans and comics artist Val Wise uses “they, them” pronouns. Wise‘s artwork is realistic, bright and colourful, with expressive faces and assorted body types. Lovely, queer slice-of-life. #LGBTQ #YA #GraphicNovel

I loved this charming comic. The characters were fun, and I liked the dynamic between Annie and Beebee. The way this book handles the situation where characters treat B special so that they themselves look good for their charity felt powerful as well. #Comic #Transgender #LGBTQ

That‘s a wrap for #bookspinbingo for November! The tagged graphic novel was my #doublebookspin for this month. It was a cute sweet graphic novel about Bebe who is a trans girl trying to figure everything out while being a cheerleader. Her fellow cheerleaders want to put her in the spotlight but she doesn‘t feel comfortable with it. So with the help of Annie she learns to tell the others how she feels. Bebe also starts to have feelings for Annie!

Lovesbooks87 @TheAromaofBooks thanks for putting this together every month. Can‘t wait for next month! 3y

This is very sweet. And it includes some gentle context and guidance for people looking to be good allies, mostly centered around listening to the people you are trying to support.

I owe a big thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a free ARC of this book.

It‘s been a little while since I‘ve read a graphic novel, so I really enjoyed this book. It was an adorable queer romance with a great plot and amazing characters. I especially loved Bebe! The pacing was a little too quick, but I understand that that‘s normal when it comes to graphic novels.

Could not be any more in love with this stunning graphic novel about a brash outsider forced to join the cheerleading team and the newly elected captain scared to make a scene after coming out as trans last year. Friendship, budding romance, and all the feels. I cannot recommend this sweet story enough!
