I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I wasn't expecting much as I've seen a few bad reviews, but I really liked it! The twist came very, very early, but it works. I think this would make a great Netflix series.

My second book club also chose a psychological thriller this month. The premise of this sounded good, and the first section built up some tension nicely, but then it all went a bit pear-shaped; I got really bored by the story. It‘s the least “thrilling” thriller I‘ve ever read. So, still a 100% record of not liking psychological thrillers….

This was a light, suspenseful read great for a beach vacation, but a lot of it was beyond unbelievable & not deep 😂

I have mixed feelings about this. I wouldn‘t classify it as a thriller. The twist comes too early taking the wind out of its suspense sails, and making it more of a domestic fiction novel. I was hoping for a jaw dropping twist to present itself at the end, but not much else happened. It‘s hard to say more without spoilers. 😬 I did enjoy Day‘s writing, but there were some issues with how mental illness was portrayed and some tired tropes. 3⭐️

Just what you would expect from a domestic thriller. I won‘t remember this next year, but it was entertaining enough of a listen in the moment. For me, this genre is a bit like a fast food sandwich - tastes great at first and afterwards I wonder why I ate it. 😂 I do like a good thriller movie though!

Day does some clever stuff with shifts in perspective and time, and this makes you feel like you‘re always seeing things from different angles but never quite as they are. In spite of this clever construction, what bothered me is that this novel left me thinking unfavourable things about women, particularly women and reproduction. Ultimately I don‘t feel like this world needs more narratives that construct women in this space as unstable.

It took me a long time to get through this... not sure if I wasn't in the mood for it or if it just left me a bit cold .... It has a good twist and is very cerebral; I liked the way it dealt with sensitive issues- fertility and mental health. I don't know... it just didn't leave me terribly satisfied 🤷‍♀️

This library book has been buried under some things, I forgot I had it 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m getting some weird vibes from the story, is it going to go Pacific Heights on me?

I was intending to go for a Booker book this afternoon, but I‘m tired and feel like something more chilled out. Which I‘m thinking this will be. Meg Mason praises this one … 🤞🏻😊

Just stacked this after @JillR ‘s review and looked it up on kindle …. 99p ! Delighted 😃

Psychological dramas are not my favourite genre and I was feeling smug that 100 or so pages in I‘d figured this one out. Or had I? Turns out I hadn‘t at all. The writing was great, and I like that it got me!

Had a break from it today and devoured Magpie in one sitting. It is so very good, really enjoyed it and absolutely loved the the ending.
I have been completely grounded by my asthma during the heatwave. This means all I can do is try to stay cool, calm and rested. Lots of reading time as unable to do anything else atm. 🥵🔥🌡

This may be an unpopular opinion, but this book was a whole STRUGGLE for me. There wasn't one likable character for me, and I think that I, more than likely, thought that it was a thriller, where, it's actually more of a slow-(not-so-much-)burn family drama. Lots of people liked this domestic thriller lots more than I did. Your enjoyment will depend on your tolerance for a narrative style which seems like it‘s telling you what happens rather than showing you. A couple desperately trying to get pregnant, their lodger, an unreliable narrator, a twist…it has all the elements, but it was just okay for me.

Jake, Marisa, and Kate. 3 people brought together by the desperation of wanting a child. Marisa and Jake are the perfect couple, until the young, seductive Kate comes along and pulls Jake away. Or is it the other way around? This a psychological thriller that defines the importance of good mental health and how important it is to communicate. Can this relationship survive the desperate call of motherhood?

Kate found it odd that a grown man should have such a regimented yet cloying relationship with his mother.

A couple has problems conceiving and turns to a surrogate. Three-quarters of this book was a pretty good read but the last quarter…And my track record of mediocre books continuesLOL. Hope Litsy doesn‘t kick me out!😀

Happy Publication Week to this great domestic thriller- some of the twists are easy to see- but it‘s an interesting look at mental health and the pressure of procreating- overall it‘s totally implausible but definitely something that keeps you turning pages! I do think it is a well constructed story- and certainly not one I could put down! A definite discussion starter!!

Marisa and Jake have the perfect relationship and are soon expecting a baby. In order to make ends meet, they take in a lodger, Kate. At first Kate seems like the ideal roommate but soon it is clear she has ulterior motives. This was a fun one with a killer twist. The ending sagged a bit. Thx to NetGalley & @SimonSchuster for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is an odd but very interesting novel about surrogacy, parenthood, jealousy, and mental health. When Jake and Kate hire a surrogate, they assume things will go as planned as they willingly invite her in as their “lodger.” But does anything ever go according to plan? Ha! Regardless, it‘s an awesome storyline that will keep you guessing until the end!

Two fantastic authors read loved both their previous books can‘t wait to read Magpie& Reputation.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ For publishing year #2021 I chose this book that here in the UK was on top of many to-read lists last year. It was very engaging and gripping. The topics are mental health issues, women's infertility and motherhood. I liked the author' style of writing so I'll want to read other books written by her. This was a gripping, tense thriller about a couple trying to have a baby and they invite another woman to be their lodger. It's about motherhood and obsession. It has some twists and turns which I didn't see coming at all.

Well, that was a twist! This was a fairly quick read, with the need to keep reading causing me to stay up and finish it in one day.

Marisa moves into a new house with her boyfriend Jake, and they immediately start trying for a baby. But then their new lodger Kate moves in, and things start to become very unsettling.

No more plot for you lot…. I don‘t want to give anything away! Suffice to say it‘s *very* twisty-turny and I loved it!

Best to go into this book completely blind. Well-written and a quick-read.
