What Fresh Hell Is This?
What Fresh Hell Is This?: Perimenopause, Menopause, Other Indignities and You | Heather Corinna
26 posts | 10 read | 33 to read
'This book feels like your best friend talking to you over drinks - if your best friend is a shit-talking, patriarchy-smashing, intersectionally feminist professor of the history of reproductive medicine and also an endocrinologist with a side hustle as a comedian.' - Dr Emily Nagoski, NYT bestselling author of Come As You Are What to Expect When You're Not Expected to Expect Anything Anymore Perimenopause and menopause experiences are as unique as all of us who move through them. While there's no one-size-fits-all, Heather Corinna tells you what can happen and what you can do to take care of yourself, all the while busting pernicious myths, offering real self-care tips - the kind that won't break the bank or your soul - and running the gamut from hot flashes to hormone therapy. With practical, clear information and support, inclusive of those with disabilities, queer, transgender, nonbinary and other gender-diverse people, people of colour, working class and others who have long been left out of the discussion, What Fresh Hell Is This? is the cooling pillow and empathetic best friend to help you through the fire.

My doctorS lack the time/interest/ability to answer questions, so I‘m reading all the things. This book is not only more inclusive of people who experience menopause than other books I‘ve read, but Corinna also does a better job bridging home remedies with medical interventions.

Tamra There should be more open conversation on this subject to prepare women! 4mo
RebL @Tamra Agreed! You should see the shock in my younger friends‘ eyes when I start sharing what I wish I had known. 4mo

I feel every woman should do themselves a favor and read this book. I feels so validated right now. The quote at the beginning is everything! “This wasn‘t plain terrible, this was fancy terrible. This was terrible with raisins in it.” Dorothy Parker!

What an amazingly empowering book! It is written by a non binary person going through mid perimenopause themselves who has had a tough time of it, and it is very inclusive and life-affirming. I was woefully under prepared for my own changes and this made me feel validated and seen. It also has very useful coping strategies.

KristiAhlers I‘m actually reading it now. And yes! All of that. 2y

I don‘t think the information was particularly new if you‘re somewhat familiar with the topic through news, relatives, friends, etc. However, the book did a good job of compiling everything in one place. I‘m also currently reading Lara Briden‘s Hormone Repair Manual and so far Briden‘s book is more informative than Corinna‘s book. Corinna‘s is really more of a personal experience with information as the frosting. Briden‘s is medical.

I cleared by #bookspinbingo board for February, which if you told me I would at the beginning of this month I would never have believed it. I did DNF quite a few, but I had others that were insanely wonderful.

This is a very readable, darkly funny, patriarchy-critical, disability-inclusive, and trans-inclusive book about perimenopause. A lot is written from their personal experience, but it is also well researched and referenced. The section on trans women is written by a trans woman author. I like that it finishes on a very positive note about postmenopause.

Julsmarshall I loved this book! She did such a great job inserting humor into a subject that is often annoying and infuriating, even if it is a natural part of life. 2y
Suet624 😆😆😆 2y
JenniferEgnor Check out Dr. Jennifer Gunter‘s blog. She‘s my favorite ob/gyn. Always has the best advice, and covers it all! And she‘s intersectional😍 https://drjengunter.com/ 2y
Lauredhel @Julsmarshall right? The pacing and humour content keeps the reading experience pitched just right, for me 2y

Picking up this book... Because it appears to be relevant to my life, or will be soon. Also, wondering why the hell I'm 54 and still not menopausal. Bodies are weird.

Blanket is a Karoo Vintage in Stylecraft Special Aran #litsycrafters

DGRachel I think I read that perimenopause can last for something obnoxious like 10-20 years and as someone who, at 46, has been knee deep in that stage for at least 2 years - shoot. me. now. 2y

Lauredhel @DGRachel I THOUGHT I was perimenopausal a few years ago but it turned out to be RA/lupus. Still waiting for the fresher hell but it must be imminent surely 2y

I thought this was a good photo representation of the book 😂
This book is amazing. 4.5❤️
The writing is hilarious, informative, inclusive, and bluntly honest. It is a perfect read for any person going through or fearing menopause.
Get a cat, a glass of wine, some ice cream, sit down with this & prepare for some chuckles while also being slightly terrified..
I enjoyed this so much I ordered copies for myself & a few friends my age. 🍷🎉🍦😭😂

Librariana Will have to add to the TBR as I am in the peri stage 😁 Might not get a cat, but will definitely be down for including wine and maybe some cake whenever I do get to reading it! 3y

Fantastic! This answered so many questions and spurred on a lot of thinking on my part. Highly recommend for any person with periods nearing the age of 45. Seriously, this book is smart, hilarious and so so good! Finished just under the deadline for #Doublespin #bookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks
