Blood Scion | Deborah Falaye

Equal parts soaring fantasy, heart-pounding action, and bloody social commentary, Blood Scion is a triumph of a book. Roseanne A. Brown, New York Times bestselling author of A Song of Wraiths and Ruin This is what they deserve. They wanted me to be a monster. I will be the worst monster they ever created. Fifteen-year-old Sloane can incinerate an enemy at willshe is a Scion, a descendant of the ancient Orisha gods. Under the Lucis brutal rule, her identity means her death if her powers are discovered. But when she is forcibly conscripted into the Lucis army on her fifteenth birthday, Sloane sees a new opportunity: to overcome the bloody challenges of Lucis training, and destroy them from within. Following one girls journey of magic, injustice, power, and revenge, Deborah Falayes debut novel, inspired by Yoruba-Nigerian mythology, is a magnetic combination of Children of Blood and Bone and An Ember in the Ashes.

3.75/5 ⭐️ While I thought the ending was good, the majority of the book lacked the magic and power I thought this book would have. Check CW because this is based on child soldiers in Nigeria and it is very dark and grim #FoodandLit Nigeria 🇳🇬

Okay - this book right here. I am grateful @TheKidUpstairs for having me read it. This book took me smooth out. I wasn‘t ready. I was constantly having to stop and get my breath in some parts.

This book is 8.5 out of 10. I can‘t wait for the second book. I feel like I was left wanting at the end. This book is not for the faint of heart or the regular fantasy YA reader. This is in your face, and I wasn‘t ready, but I kept going.

If you liked Hunger Games - this is for you. I wasn‘t sure if I could make it, I mean I just wanted to rescue everyone from this fate that lay ahead for them. When the second book comes out, I will definitely rereading this one to get continue the energy to the next book, War Widow. Loved this AI pic - just makes me think of the book.

This book 🥴 has me in a chokehold. This book started off dark. Like, I switched from tea or wine fast. I am so grateful for @TheKidUpstairs for suggesting it. Also Buddha has decided to say hi. Running behind with my litsy mail, but task master Buddha says I should have it all completed by Monday lol 🐶🐾

TheKidUpstairs I got as far as Sloane's initiation earlier this month and I had to put it aside for a while. It was just too much at the time. I just picked it back up to continue! 13mo

Sleepy Casey + new book. I started BLOOD SCION last night and found the opening chapters so intense and immediate that I was annoyed with myself for needing to sleep. I‘m now a hundred pages deep and it‘s shaping up to be gripping and brutal.

dabbe Cozy Casey, I want to “beep“ that adorable nose! ❣️🐾❣️ 13mo
xicanti @dabbe I have to boop his nose at least three times a day. There‘s no way around it. 13mo

This was very well written for a debut. Taking the ides of child soldiers and putting it in a fantasy setting worked really well. I will say this book was brutal but I appreciate that the author was trying to show a harsh reality that few pay attention to. One of the better African based fantasies that I've read.

Chapter 31 of Blood Scion; girl are you SERIOUS?! I mean I know this book constantly mentions that these child soldiers have to pick between their humanity or survival, and that they can‘t have both, but omg! I can‘t believe she‘s leaving her new friends and isn‘t going to try to save them at all. This book is so intense but so so good. I have no idea where Sloane is going to go from here at this point, especially since Dane now blocks her path.

I‘m not quite sure what to make of this debut YA fantasy inspired by Yoruba-Nigerian mythology. The writing is good. the premise interesting & there are lots of twists & turns. It‘s a fun read. It‘s also extremely violent which isn‘t a problem in of itself IF the story warrants it. Unfortunately, I think the context for the violence isn‘t as well established as the author/editorial team believes. Promising, needed a little more work to be great.

Littens, I did the thing. I stopped watching the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer (and all the commentary because every once in a while I AM that much of a nerd) and started reading the book. So far, it‘s very entertaining…

Tonight‘s reading…assuming I can stop obsessing over the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer long enough to not only pick up a book but also to actually concentrate on the words on the page…I mean, have you seen the trailer?!? So good!!!

In all seriousness, I‘ve heard good things about this book and am excited to dive in. Love the cover!
