My January 2024 #5StarBooks. The sizes of the books are kinda related to my preference/ranking of the picks. With tagged book being my January Favorite.
This is my #JanuaryPick for my #BookBracket2024. The book has so much insight into the mental health and correctional world. Such a harrowing story, but so worth the read.
Wow. So, this was a great book. I felt that it really did a great job at talking about the mental health challenges of the girls who committed this crime. The lack of care these girls had for their mental and emotional health throughout their short 12 years was so heartbreaking (this does not minimize the victims struggle). I felt it was really well written. Highly recommend.

Fascinating case from my hometown. It really shows how terrible mental health resources/systems are in the US.
This book was so well written that the author completely faded into the background.
My big takeaway from it is that 12-year-olds should never be tried as adults, nor should they be institutionalized alongside adults. That either of those things happen is a serious failure in our judicial system.
I believe that this crime happened at all because of a lack of availability in our mental health services in the U.S.
Wow, I feel like this book deserves more attention. One of the most skillfully told and well-researched works of true crime I‘ve ever read. Shocking, heartbreaking, eye-opening - not to be missed!
“When Morgan Geyser was a toddler, ghosts would hug and bite her.”
Yikes! That‘s quite the opener.

#Bookmail I‘ve been hearing such good things about the Urrea, couldn‘t resist any longer! Really excited for the Barnhill novella - such a great cover. And tagged was a 2023 Edgar Award nominee in the Best Fact Crime category. I‘m ready to be gripped!
This is such an incredibly sad case. I live in Wisconsin so also got angry that these kids were charged as adults.
I‘m currently in the US of A this week 😉 and went to a Barnes and Noble store.
Here are my purchases!
This is a compelling story about mental illness and the horrible ways that we treat even children that are afflicted by it. It‘s also a story about the ongoing injustice of our judicial system that turns children into adults for political purposes and really is a barbaric situation that those who participate in can only hope that they will never face judgment.
This true crime book makes for a well-performed and engaging #audiobook. The same year as Hale‘s debut YA novel came out, three 12 year old girls walked into the woods in a Waukesha, WI park- and only two walked out. Focusing more on the perpetrators and their mental illness, Hale‘s latest book certainly will make for a discussion starter as she reveals idiosyncrasies of WI, and more details on the background of this horrible crime.
A good example of careful, compassionately written true crime about a very difficult case. The writer worked hard to balance respect for what an awful thing the victim went through at the same time as writing sensitively about the perpetrators‘ mental health and problems that adults should have seen earlier. You come out of it feeling that every part of the system failed all three girls. #scarathlon2022 @Clwojick
This one won't come out until August, but I devoured it! I really think Hale did a great job of presenting everything in this case, and really focusing on how and why Morgan and Anisa did what they did, while still being respectful to the victim, Payton (at the time called Bella). What happened to Payton was awful, and it's also awful how we treat kids with mental illness, and the whole super predator bs.
