The Witches of Moonshyne Manor
The Witches of Moonshyne Manor | Bianca Marais
16 posts | 12 read | 19 to read
A coven of modern-day witches. A magical heist-gone-wrong. A looming threat. Five octogenarian witches gather as an angry mob threatens to demolish Moonshyne Manor. All eyes turn to the witch in charge, Queenie, who confesses they've fallen far behind on their mortgage payments. Still, there's hope, since the imminent return of Ruby--one of the sisterhood who's been gone for thirty-three years--will surely be their salvation. But the mob is only the start of their troubles. One man is hellbent on avenging his family for the theft of a legacy he claims was rightfully his. In an act of desperation, Queenie makes a bargain with an evil far more powerful than anything they've ever faced. Then things take a turn for the worse when Ruby's homecoming reveals a seemingly insurmountable obstacle instead of the solution to all their problems. The witches are determined to save their home and themselves, but their aging powers are no match for increasingly malicious threats. Thankfully, they get a bit of help from Persephone, a feisty TikToker eager to smash the patriarchy. As the deadline to save the manor approaches, fractures among the sisterhood are revealed, and long-held secrets are exposed, culminating in a fiery confrontation with their enemies. Funny, tender and uplifting, the novel explores the formidable power that can be discovered in aging, found family and unlikely friendships. Marais' clever prose offers as much laughter as insight, delving deeply into feminism, identity and power dynamics while stirring up intrigue and drama through secrets, lies and sex. Heartbreaking and heart-mending, it will make you grateful for the amazing women in your life.

This is a very feel good book! So, if you need a pick me up, I recommend it. The messaging is incredibly positive: women power, women supporting women, and being your true self! However, in my opinion, there were a lot of plot points throughout the story that weren‘t addressed at the appropriate time. For example, we find out who is breaking into the house but none of the characters do anything about it. I have to give the book a…

When I‘m not reading from my 2017 short story advent collection (yes, I never read it so five years on, I‘m finally reading it), I‘m working on this one.

F? the Patriarchy but with Witches and I'm so here for that. Wonderful story of Found Family and Aging Disgracefully. "Aging gracefully is a bore. Aging disgracefully is something to be proud of."

Also my Thanksgiving Cactus continues to shine.

LiseWorks Lol, you mean your Christmas Cactus. It's blooming lovely colors, mine is white which is in bloom as well. 2mo

Bellies are full. Kitchen is clean. Settling in with my current read.

Five octogenarian witches and this: “I‘m just wondering what you‘re doing at our door.”

“Oh, I‘m here to fight the patriarchy,” the girl replies, smiling widely....... Ruth Bader Ginsburg is here with me, so that makes two of us.”

With that, she slaps her thigh, calling, “Ruth!” An Italian greyhound wearing a crocheted collar bounds to her side."

Loving it! ☺️

Totally didn‘t realize BM is Canadian so 👏🏻👏🏻 yay for Can Lit! An absolutely not scary witch tale centring on a coven of octogenarians getting run out of town and business by the local patriarchy. A social media savvy teenage loner comes to their aid and shenanigans ensue. I quite enjoyed it

Bianca Marais creates a feminist witch story for the 21st century. You‘ll enjoy this book if you crave a story with strong characters and clear lines between good and evil. It has a liberal perspective and affirms the natural diversity among the characters. If this appeals to you, then this story from Marais will have you laughing in pleasure.

Sorry in advance for all the posts! I need to catch up.

This book was very interesting and I love the way the story unfolded. Women in their 80‘s fighting against the patriarchy. There is an old mystery and a murder you have to follow along with and figure out. I really enjoyed it.

Today‘s #scarathlondailyprompt is #magic. My current read is a funny, poignant, magical book about a group of aging witches. Saw it on the library‘s new books shelf and couldn‘t resist. #librarymagic works on me every time.

This story touched on so many social issues that could make you wonder if it is too on the nose but then those well placed zingers go straight to the readers heart. It is a story for everyone to enjoy.

This book took a moment to get into as we jumped between the characters and timeframes, but I really enjoyed the humour, the female friendships, that the acknowledgement that the elderly may still have a sex drive...I noticed some reviewers didn't care for that part, but ask anyone who works with them - they are old, not dead. No worries though, there was nothing graphic. Overall it was a fun read and I gave it 3.5/4 stars.
