Hang the Moon | Jeannette Walls
29 posts | 27 read | 13 to read
From Jeannette Walls, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Glass Castle, comes a riveting new novel about an indomitable young woman in Virginia during Prohibition. Most folk thought Sallie Kincaid was a nobody who'd amount to nothing. Sallie had other plans. Sallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. Born at the turn of the 20th century into a life of comfort and privilege, Sallie remembers little about her mother who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old, the Duke has remarried and had a son, Eddie. While Sallie is her father's daughter, sharp-witted and resourceful, Eddie is his mother's son, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident, and Sallie is cast out. Nine years later, she returns, determined to reclaim her place in the family. That's a lot more complicated than Sallie expected, and she enters a world of conflict and lawlessness. Sallie confronts the secrets and scandals that hide in the shadows of the Big House, navigates the factions in the family and town, and finally comes into her own as a bold, sometimes reckless bootlegger. You will fall in love with Sallie Kincaid, a feisty and fearless, terrified and damaged young woman who refuses to be corralled.

This author wrote The Glass Castle, a book that stayed with me a long time. I thought this one would be good, it was. Set in the South when families ruled small communities, the story tells of Sallie Kincaid's life as the daughter of the town 'boss'. An engrossing story of how everyone lives were mixed up together in unexpected ways. This is a story of sometimes taking the law into your hands, when laws are unjust.
Recommend!

This was a really interesting historical fiction story. I really liked how the story progressed from Sallie‘s childhood onward and the relationships she had throughout the book as her life changed. Very well written and an interesting read.

This was a low pick. I love historical fiction and books about found families, but this story line just had too much going on.

Prairiegirl_reading I hated the glass castle so I‘m staying far away from this one!! 1y
TheLudicReader @Tamra I would have abandoned it at about page 10 if it hadn‘t been a book club pick. We met last night; no one liked it. @Prairiegirl_reading I thought The Glass Castle was good back when I read it, but this should never have been published. @dabbe haha. 1y

I am supposed to have this book read by Thursday‘s book club meeting but I am not enjoying it at all. Lily agrees it‘s a snooze fest. Anyone read it? Is it worth the slog or should I skim read?

Aims42 Ehhhhh, I pushed myself to finish it but looking back on it now, I feel a “meh” rating is more fitting 🤷🏼‍♀️ I got tired of allllllll the drama. (edited) 1y

This book took place in the 1920s, during prohibition. I‘ve never read a novel about this topic before. I loved the strong female characters. Being an avid fan of craft beer, I don‘t think I‘d have survived this era, lol. This story was about senseless laws laid forth by the government (my opinion) that begged to be broken. I can‘t imagine anything like prohibition happening in this day and age, but you never know. I enjoyed this book.

There was a rather interesting bootleggin‘ moonshinnin' prohibition story nestled inside this weird family dynamic. However, I was more caught up in the baby-daddy saga(s) and who was laid blame for failed relationships that just kept coming. It became a bit much when I had to start charting who slept with whom, who fathered whom and how they were interrelated.

MY GOODNESS THESE PEOPLE - ENTIRE FAMILY - WERE ALL CURSED WITH MAJOR OJO AND BAD JUJU!
I was rooting for Sallie Kincaid, a feisty and fearless, terrified, and damaged woman who refuses to be corralled, dismissed, or underestimated all throughout this one. This one has a little historical fiction and a whole lotta family drama.

All in all, I liked this book and would give it a solid 4 stars 👍 It definitely brought the drama, seems like every chapter I was thinking, “Now what? Can‘t anyone catch a break??”. But the characters were fascinating and I know I‘ll be thinking of this one for a long time.

So many #botm picks sounded good this month, but I had to go with Jeannette Walls, and I'm so glad I did.

Sallie Kincaid was treated unfairly by her stepmother as a child and was sent to live with her aunt.

When her dad brings her home as a teenager, Sallie learns about the family business as well as the twisted family tree.

She is a fierce heroine that I loved rooting for.

Prohibition in Virginia was a scary and exciting time.

4 ⭐️ I recommend this book for fans of historical and literary fiction. From the author of the memoir, “The Glass Castle,” comes a novel that transports readers to a Prohibition-era Deep South. I found this book to be a page-turner and devoured it! Sallie Kincaid is not a faultless human, but she is a character I can stand beside as she pushes back against arbitrary societal rules. This is a #bookspin read and I'm leading the discussion for the local B&N book club. I have to say I'm a fan of this coming of age read Sallie Kincaid was an intense but likeable and relatable character. Finally, a strong female read that doesn't try too hard and fails. @TheAromaofBooks
