The Moth Keeper
The Moth Keeper: (A Graphic Novel) | K. O'Neill
27 posts | 29 read | 7 to read
Being a Moth Keeper is a huge responsibility and a great honor, but what happens when the new Moth Keeper decides to take a break from the moon and see the sun for the first time? A middle-grade fantasy graphic novel about passion, duty, and found family. Anya is finally a Moth Keeper, the protector of the lunar moths that allow the Night-Lily flower to bloom once a year. Her village needs the flower to continue thriving and Anya is excited to prove her worth and show her thanks to her friends with her actions, but what happens when being a Moth Keeper isnt exactly what Anya thought it would be? The nights are cold in the desert and the lunar moths live far from the village. Anya finds herself isolated and lonely. Despite Anyas dedication, she wonders what it would be like to live in the sun. Her thoughts turn into an obsession, and when Anya takes a chance to stay up during the day to feel the sun's warmth, her village and the lunar moths are left to deal with the consequences. K. ONeill brings to life a beautifully illustrated fantasy world about responsibility to yourself and your community. The Moth Keeper is filled with magic, hope, and friendship.

Society in the desert is divided into two villages, the sun village and the night village. The night village worships the moon and is given the gift of night moths that pollinated a night blooming lily that keeps their village alive and prosperous.

I did not expect this book to be that deep. But it absolutely was. It‘s about found family, society, working together and mental health

3 ⭐Is the darkness something to be afraid of? Is it a life giving force? Is it a life stealing force? That is the question within these pages? Anya is the newest moth keeper. It is her job nightly take the moths to a place they can glow and become strong pollinators to the tree that keeps her society alive, and then put them to sleep again for the night. It‘s lonely. She lives in a society that lives by night but has always to feel the

LibrarianRyan sun on her face. She does get that chance but then argues within herself what is right? What is wrong? And is it OK to be afraid of the dark. This was an interesting book. It leaves one with a lot to think about. The illustrations are beautiful and fit the story quite well. Story is easy to read and will be loved by many. 4mo

I love K. O'Neill's art, but the story wasn't 100% there for me with this book. Lots of wordless panels that didn't convey to me what was going on, and I never fully connected with the main character's emotional struggle. Maybe the author gave me too much credit to be able to interpret her intentions, but a lot of the story felt vague or implied, and the art sometimes lacks detail, like she was used to drawing large and had to go small here...

I wanted to like this book, but I was bored and just couldn't stay focused on it. I loved the symbolism it brought in and the journey of self-discovery the character went on, but it wasn't enough to make me enjoy the story.

A group of people have decided to be awake during the night, and one of them is the moth keeper. Making sure that the moths take shelter before the sun rise to be able to pollinate a very specific tree.

A graphic novel about how everything works together in nature and that we are just a small part of this.

More beautiful art and gently inspirational messaging, as I've come to expect from this author. ❤️Community, responsibility, acceptance, healing, recognizing everyone's contribution, understanding when learning/mistakes, recognizing when the search for a nebulous 'more' comes at the expense of a real life to be lived and enjoyed, especially if the search is masking an issue that might be confronted and resolved, with the possibility for change.

The artwork was beautiful. The story was a little underdeveloped.

I had a great reading month in July. 20 audiobooks, 16 graphic novels and 6 novels. I also DNF one book due to animal cruelty and experimentation that was just too much.

I am hoping I can keep up in August even with work/school starting back up!

such a beautiful graphic novel that embraces being rather than searching. k. o‘neill‘s books are all wonderful (and if you have lepidopterophobia like me, the moths are illustrated in a gentle and non-detailed way, which is a huge bonus)

I almost forgot about this #RushAThon in August because that‘s a super busy month for me (mine and my husband‘s bdays & 10 year wedding anniversary) but I‘ve decided to do this casually.

📚Read the 4 graphic novels my friends lent me
📚Read the infographic book I have out from the library
📚Read The Moth Keeper
📚Read the library‘s community reads book

I was a little disappointed with this one but then Tea Dragon Society is a hard act to follow.

Muted colour palette, gorgeously illustrated but mostly silent and the abrupt past/present switching wasn‘t always super easy to follow.

This children‘s fantasy graphic novel by nonbinary New Zealand cartoonist K O‘Neill requires close reading of the illustrations to fully follow the action. The MC, Anya, feels she must prove her worth and do it without any help from others. It‘s a gentle story about kindness and participation in your community. #AllAges #LGBTQ #comics

This was an absolutely lovely graphic novel by the creators of the Tea Dragon society. And at its centre is the work of nurturing an annually-flowering Night-Flower, so that's my Flowers prompt done for #WickedWords @AsYouWish

I love the word O‘Neil brings to life in this! My favorite part was how amazingly expressive and narrative the long wordless sections that punctuated it managed to be.

A #graphicnovel with really nice art! I really enjoyed the mythology and the topics of found family, community, abandonment, and overwork that was explored. It was a bit more serious than I prefer, but I also think it's a very moving story about finding your path. Also, I loved how naturally #queer it was ❤️ i want more like this

Kenyazero I'm very much looking forward to reading this one 😍 2y

Adorable art style about a young girl who wants to shed light to others. She chose this lonely job because she is used to being alone. She believes she can do it while she struggles with loneliness. Her fear of the dark being overpowered by wanting to shed light for others. Yet she feels useless. Her friend is constantly looking out for her. Community is always there. While it didn‘t leave me feeling big feels, I loved the original story and art

Unfortunately this novel fell flat for me :-/

It will likely leave you pondering why. There were things I enjoyed about it. The
concept for this story was great and I liked our main character who was heavily introverted. I appreciated that.

Personally I wasn't fond of the art style and definitely won't pick up other books by the same author.

A nice story though.

In this gentle and quietly emotional full-length graphic novel by the creator of The Tea Dragon Society, a young fox girl takes on the mantle of the lonely and important job of Moth Keeper for her nocturnal village. But in the darkness, Anya must confront her past, her need for community, her mistakes, and her desire to live in the light. This is an enchantingly illustrated and softly illuminating fable about burnout, community, the natural world.

TieDyeDude Nice! I'm looking forward to this. 2y
