Resurrection Bay
Resurrection Bay | Emma Viskic
Caleb Zelic, profoundly deaf since early childhood, has always lived on the outside - watching, picking up tell-tale signs people hide in a smile, a cough, a kiss. When a childhood friend is murdered, a sense of guilt and a determination to prove his own innocence sends Caleb on a hunt for the killer. But he can't do it alone. Caleb and his troubled friend Frankie, an ex-cop, start with one clue: Scott, the last word the murder victim texted to Caleb. But Scott is always one step ahead. This gripping, original and fast-paced crime thriller is set between a big city and a small coastal town, Resurrection Bay, where Caleb is forced to confront painful memories. Caleb is a memorable protagonist who refuses to let his deafness limit his opportunities, or his participation in the investigation. But does his persistence border on stubbornness? And at what cost? As he delves deeper into the investigation Caleb uncovers unwelcome truths about his murdered friend - and himself. 'Viskic has created a genuinely unique and captivating character who deserves a place alongside Jack Irish and Cliff Hardy.' - P.M. Newton, author of The Old School and Beams Falling.

Finished this book soaking up the rays this afternoon. It got up to 73°F and I wanted to enjoy it before the rain tomorrow!

This was recommended to my husband from the Get Booked podcast. He never read it, so I had to.

Caleb is a deaf private detective. The mystery was good and I didn‘t see the bad guys coming! It was a bit violent but I flew through this book! Set in Australia

Found it hard to get into. Plot very convoluted and I had a hard time getting a grip of the characters. A bit violent as well for me.

I do think the plot for this was a bit convoluted, but I still enjoyed it. Caleb is a security investigator and has been deaf since early childhood. A close friend is brutally murdered and he is determined to find out who did it and why. Things become increasingly difficult as he is unsure who he can trust. He also has to deal with some issues in his past and with his ex-wife. I‘m not sure I have read a book where the main character is deaf. ⬇️

Bookzombie The reader sometimes misses pieces of conversation because Caleb does. I was satisfied that my suspicion about one character was correct, but I didn‘t quite expect the ending. I‘m looking forward to reading the next one. #Booked2021 #SetinAustralia #BookspinBingo (edited) 3y

Quality debut crime fiction published in 2015. Am pretty sure it‘s the first in a series now 🤔. A deaf protagonist with a Koori love interest, and set in my hometown of Melbourne. 👍🙌👏
Crime fiction is no longer a preferred genre for me, but I enjoyed this and might read the other books in the series when I need a palate cleanser in future.

Gillyreads Just finished the third book. Worth reading all three if you enjoyed the first one. 3y

Making a start on this #ozfiction that I received in my #AussieSecretSanta 📦👏. It‘s crime fiction set in Melbourne, my home town. Just the ticket when I‘m missing family & friends over there (I‘m 3000-odd kilometers away in Perth). On page 27 my home suburb of Altona gets a mention too 🥰. #currentlyreading

#2020Book37
The set-up in this thriller was great, but the big reveal at the end felt like a bit of a cop-out. All that aside, the best part of this book was reading about a man who works to solve crimes despite being almost completely deaf. He's a great character and I can't wait to read more about him.

Kimberlone The town I grew up in is located on a Resurrection Bay (I‘m guessing not the same one)! 4y

The main investigator was interesting but the plot felt convoluted and graphic violence was the engine to keep things moving.

LiteraryinLawrence I agree. I was interested in this one but bailed because the violence was a little much for me. 4y
Nebklvr @LiteraryinLititz It didn‘t get any less violent. I just started another by John Connolly that is the same way so probably going to dnf that one 4y

Stayed up late to finish this yesterday. It was mostly good - have to admit that it took me a little bit to warm up to Caleb and I really liked Kat right from the start. This one had lots of twists and turns and it kept me engaged through the unexpected ending. I have the second book ready to go next. Hope there are more Caleb books in the future.

⭐️⭐️ I usually gobble crime fiction in one sitting, and I expected this to be a page-turner, too. I, however, was disappointed by the convoluted narratives; there‘s totally no control there! On many occassions, the author tried to insert humor in between serious crime talks 🤔 If it was not for the curiosity of whodunnit, I would‘ve bailed on this 😫 The struggle was real when I was about 60% in, but I pushed myself til the end

My first Australian crime, murder mystery novel. An absolute fast-paced pleasure. Viskic adds interesting aspects to the traditional genre; the hardened PI is profoundly deaf and more dependent on sign language than he'd care to admit. His romantic partner is a strong, smart indigenous Australian woman #represent. So refreshing to have minority protagonists. I'll definitely be back for more in the series.

The usual crime novel tropes are here: damaged ex-cops working as private eyes, alcoholism, broken marriages, crooked cops. This book's main difference is the protagonist, Caleb, is deaf.

Caleb's deafness is shown as neither disability nor superpower, and it suffuses the book with fresh perspective. At one point, when Caleb is pursued by bad guys on a beach, he *sees* gunfire as plumes of sand around him.

Absorbing and witty to boot. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

HippieChickHomeschool How intriguing! I don't usually read crime novels, but I think I will just for a positive portrayal of deafness. 7y

This is Australian author Emma Viskics' debut novel. A Mystery but a little different. Caleb the main protagonist is an investigator and is profoundly deaf. The author hasn't used this as a hook, she simply includes in a matter of fact manner. I hope you all take a look at it, it's a great read and deserves some attention. It also gives a peek at our Australian life - apart from the murder!
