A Botanist's Guide to Society and Secrets | Kate Khavari
8 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
Brilliant botanist Saffron Everleigh is ready for her next thrilling adventure in the newest installment of Kate Khavaris mesmerizing historical mystery series. A cleverly plotted puzzle (Ashley Weaver) in the vein of Opium and Absinthe, this is perfect for fans of Rhys Bowen and Sujata Massey. London, 1923. Returning from Paris, botanical researcher Saffron Everleigh finds that her former love interest Alexander Ashtons brother, Adrian, is being investigated for murder. A Russian scientist working for the English government has been poisoned, and expired in Adrians train compartment. Alexander asks Saffron to put in a good word for Adrian with Inspector Green. Despite her unresolved feelings for Alexander, Saffron begins to unravel mysteries surrounding the dead scientist. As if a murder case werent enough, her best friend Elizabeths war-hero brother, Nick, arrives in town and takes an immediate interest in Saffron. Saffron learns Alexander has been keeping secrets from her, including a connection to Nick, who Saffron and Elizabeth begin to suspect is more than he seems. When another scientist is found dead, Saffron agrees to go undercover at the government laboratory. Risking her career and her safety, she learns there are many more interested parties and dangerous secrets to uncover than shed realized. But some secrets, Saffron will find, are better left undiscovered.

Book 3 in the Saffron Everleigh Mystery series came out in June but I can‘t seem to get my library to buy it yet in print, ebook or audio (even though they have the first 2) 🤬
Imagine my delight to find it at the library bookstore when I ran in to drop off my due-back books. And it was 50% off, so just $1.50!

This series was one of my favorite‘s from @Laughterhp ‘s 2023 #AuldLangSpine list. The gift that keeps on giving! 🤗 #SeriesLove2024

Just finished the 3rd book in the Saffron series! This one has her going undercover for the government. Lots of intrigue and bad guys. And the romance deepens! 🥰🥰 Which makes me so happy because it‘s not super dragged out!

I absolutely love this series.

julesG I loved seeing the romance deepen. I had fears this would be a very slow romance with a first kiss in book 6 or later. 5mo

This is the third book l read in this series, and I'm enjoying it.
Khavari is very good with characters. She can put them in very thorny situation and let them show what stuff they are really made of.
The setting is also very good and unique.
This said, the mystery is not as strong. In this book in particular, it was so confused that even now I'm not sure what happened.
Yet, the characters kept me in there 😜

Saffron is returning from a research trip & finds that her colleague, and former love interest, needs her help to prove his brother's innocence. After the death of a scientist sharing the same train car he's their only suspect. Once she starts to learn more about the scientist she uncovers more than she expected & the unexpected dangers that come with that knowledge. The book ends perfectly with the possibility for more.

The stakes are even higher for Saffron when she is recruited to help investigate the suspicious death of a Russian scientist who was working on deadly fungi.

Such an interesting series. I love the setting of 1920s London, the side characters are all fascinating (Elizabeth💖), & a resolution on the love 🔺! But Saffron really irritates me sometimes, & I dislike the brand new plot complication in the last 3% to hook you in the next one. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

I haven't found my rhythm yet 😟
I haven't even touched Dracula. I think that, at this point, I'll try to pick up again where l left off last year.

I am slowly getting back to some semblance of reading routine, so l hope that soon I'll be able to read regularly again.

My bujo tells me that this year (so far) I've only finished two books 😶
Reviews follow.

#NewYearNewBooks

When it #InvolvesPoison (& often toxic plants & flowers), botanist Saffron Everleigh is on the case. I was introduced to this historical mystery series through @Laughterhp ‘s #AuldLangSpine list last year & it made my list this year.

I‘m excited for the newest book (tagged) to come out in June. It‘s on my #SeriesLove2024 list. Start with the first book, tagged in the comments below.

GatheringBooks Oooh! How nice your layout and design for the prompt! 👌🏽🥰😘 10mo
