Luke Skywalker Can't Read
Luke Skywalker Can't Read: And Other Geeky Truths | Ryan Britt
26 posts | 18 read | 55 to read
Ryan Britt is . . . the Virgil you want to guide you through the inferno of geekery. Lev Grossman, author of the bestselling Magician's trilogy Pop Culture and sci-fi guru Ryan Britt has never met a monster, alien, wizard, or superhero that didnt need further analysis. Essayist Ryan Britt got a sex education from dirty pictures of dinosaurs, made out with Jar-Jar Binks at midnight, and figured out how to kick depression with a Doctor Who Netflix-binge. Alternating between personal anecdote, hilarious insight, and smart analysis, Luke Skywalker Cant Read contends that Barbarella is good for you, that monster movies are just romantic comedies with commitment issues, that Dracula and Sherlock Holmes are total hipsters, and, most shockingly, shows how virtually everyone in the Star Wars universe is functionally illiterate. Romp through time and space, from the circus sideshowsof 100 yearsago to the Comic Cons of today, from darkest corners of the Galaxy to the comfort of your couch. For anyone who pretended their flashlight was a lightsaber, stood in line for a movie at midnight, or dreamed they were abducted by aliens, Luke Skywalker Can't Read is full of answers to questions you haven't thought to ask, and perfect for readers of Chuck Klosterman, Rob Sheffield, and Ernest Cline. From the Trade Paperback edition.

📚📚📚 A collection of essays ranging from Star Wars to Asimov. While funny and interesting, when I read books like this, I get the feeling of geeksplaining by a gatekeeping fanboy. Britt is writing about his opinions & thoughts on these SFF legends & repeatedly makes attempts to assure the reader he isn‘t doing any of that & even makes fun of his younger self for doing so. Overall it‘s fun but not groundbreaking & isn‘t saying anything new.

A collection of essays regarding various science fiction books, films and TV shows! As with all collections some essays were better, others I may have missed the point a bit (as I didn‘t know the show or novel). A must for all science fiction fans! Funny, witty and thought provoking.

I remember why I added Carmilla to my reading list now, it was from reading this book that @Eyelit recommended to me here on Litsy, which mentioned Carmilla.

It always comes back to Litsy

rubyslippersreads You reminded me that last year I got the Audible version of Carmilla, read by Megan Follows. Need to listen to that this month. (edited) 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @rubyslippersreads #LitsyStrikesAgain! 👍. I bet it's good on audio too, and perfect for October. 7y

#bookmail Two books of essays about science fictions properties.

I've read the title essay from Luke Skywalker Can't Read and it uses the fact that no one in any Star Wars film is show reading or writing for pleasure, only interpreting data, to argue that all the denizens of the Star Wars universe are functionally illiterate. Should be goofy fun to offset the more serious Ender essays.

ephemeralwaltz Ooh fun! 7y

This just broke my brain. It makes so much sense! But now I must know: Which hobbits are the other Beatles? Is Brian Epstein Gandalf or Aragorn?! SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS!!!

Am I seriously the only person who prefers The Magician's Nephew?!

Ruri_kaichou I actually don't mind where it's placed in the series. 😅 But if I really had to choose, Magician's Nephew would be first because I like the Last Battle being last. 🤓😅😳 7y

Fun dip into nerdy waters. Short, easy listen. Narrator did a fine job.

Smart & geeky essays about a variety of topics: the path to the dark side is paved with illiteracy, monsters & their fashion choices, nostalgia and racial revisionism in Back To The Future, Shakespeare and superhero movies reboots, rise of the robots as Frankenstein stories, plus a variety of other topics that nerdy fans of all things sci-fi (like me) will love. Lots of Star Wars & Star Trek, but also Battlestar Galactica, Dracula, LOTR, & more.

monkeygirlsmama This sounds like something my husband would really go for. Thanks! 🙂 7y

Imagined conversation of Tolkien dreaming up LOTR after being pushed for a Hobbit sequel and trying to one-up CS Lewis on the metaphors. Earlier in this essay he talks about reading books in the order published and the infamous "The Magician's Nephew" Narnia book order controversy in comparison to the Silmarillion.

rachel_mbc Oh man, I have strong feeling about those Narnia books. I bought a boxed set of them when I started at my bookstore and promptly rearranged them to the correct order: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe will always come first. 😀 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice another one I'll add to my to-read list! I got this audio from hoopla through my library, and its a collection of science fiction related essays.... I'm really enjoying them all, not just this one Star Wars related one. 7y

Not only are they really more of a hieroglyphic, post reading society, but we are heading there quickly ourselves with emoji's, voice-to-text, visual clips, etc.

OMG! Things I've never thought of before... what's the quickest way to the "Dark Side" no reading and no journalism. This essay is messing with my mind today, because it's true and something I've never thought about regarding the series.

Hard to believe it's time for #augustwrapup already! My #stats for August are still high (though last month still holds a record methinks). I know I'll be slowing down in September because work will be completely crazypants. I enjoyed doing #augustofpages and look forward to September's photo challenge 😄 #augustohotochallenge (also, even though I hate even numbers, I love that my total is 42!)

I was expecting a light romp through geek culture; what I got was far more in-depth and interesting. A fun and often humorous read and I'm so glad my library had a copy. Many thanks to @Carol for bringing this book to my awareness!

Great nerdy book, which went more in-depth than I had anticipated. Warning: if you don't want spoilers about TV shows and books that have been our for years but you haven't experienced yet--read at your own risk.
My clock is 11:41 so I'm halfway done! I'm not going to make it by midnight EST but I'm determined to finish. Here's everything I've read so far in the #24in48 #readathon on this lovely #socksunday.

HOW DID I MISS SO MANY LITERARY REFERENCES IN STAR TREK!??? This chapter is seriously making me want to forget the #24in48 #readathon and go binge watch ALL THE STAR TREK.
🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖

Chelsey My honey and I were talking about the great SW vs ST debate and although we don't consider ourselves classical Trekkies we concluded that although the SW movies are entertaining, on the whole ST falls much more in line with our values systems. Not even getting into the racism in SW, but just based on Yoda's maxim, "Do or do not. There is no try," we are underwhelmed by the messages in SW. 8y
zembla @Chelsey I totally agree. Trek feels much more mature and nuanced to me. It made me laugh when J.J. Abrams said he wasn't a Trek fan because it was "too philosophical" — I guess that's why his Star Wars movie is so much better than his Star Trek movies, he's finally not boxing above his weight class ? 8y
Carol @christinamcc yeah there's a lot to be said for an actual fan working on producing more of the fandom. I watched 15 mins of his Star Trek and left the room. No thanks! Give me overacting--with big 💖- from Shatner, especially now that he doesn't hate fans so much. 8y

The titular essay is like one giant advert for the importance of the written word and how the discouragement of reading can lead to a disenfranchised and enslaved populous. While the book's content is skewing a little heavier and in-depth than I'd anticipated by the cover (NEVER JUDGE a book by its cover and all that) my nerdy self is on cloud 9.

MaryAnn1 The last sentence of your highlighted passage says it all🤓 8y

Book 7 is on the Kindle for easier reading in bed. At just over 6 hours logged I have a hella long way to go to come close to my goal for the #24in48 #readathon. I am totally rocking this Out of Print shirt, though. You can't see much of it but it has a bunch of date due stamps all over it.
