The Amateur Marriage
The Amateur Marriage | Anne Tyler
11 posts | 38 read | 15 to read
From the inimitable Anne Tyler, a rich and compelling novel about a mismatched marriageand its consequences, spanning three generations. They seemed like the perfect coupleyoung, good-looking, made for each other. The moment Pauline, a stranger to the Polish Eastern Avenue neighborhood of Baltimore (though she lived only twenty minutes away), walked into his mothers grocery store, Michael was smitten. And in the heat of World War II fervor, they are propelled into a hasty wedding. But they never should have married.Pauline, impulsive, impractical, tumbles hit-or-miss through life; Michael, plodding, cautious, judgmental, proceeds deliberately. While other young marrieds, equally ignorant at the start, seemed to grow more seasoned, Pauline and Michael remain amateurs. In time their foolish quarrels take their toll. Even when they find themselves, almost thirty years later, loving, instant parents to a little grandson named Pagan, whom they rescue from Haight-Ashbury, they still cannot bridge their deep-rooted differences. Flighty Pauline clings to the notion that the rifts can always be patched. To the unyielding Michael, they become unbearable. From the sound of the cash register in the old grocery to the counterculture jargon of the sixties, from the miniskirts to the multilayered apparel of later years, Anne Tyler captures the evocative nuances of everyday life during these decades with such telling precision that every page brings smiles of recognition. Throughout, as each of the competing voices bears witness, we are drawn ever more fully into the complex entanglements of family life in this wise, embracing, and deeply perceptive novel.

Marriage and family. It‘s not always easy. You have to work at it, compromise, and sometimes you find you are just not happy enough to stick it out in the long run. The characters also have many regrets in life, but life is about choices, growing, and learning along the way. Read this for a work program, senior center book club. #ReadHarder23 ~Read an author local to you #Pop23 ~A book about divorce

Cinfhen Sounds great!! Im going through a family drama phase right now - loving books about messy families and marriages spanning decades 😜💜 2y
squirrelbrain I love Anne Tyler, but haven‘t read this one. Great review! 2y
Cortg @squirrelbrain I‘ve only read one other book by her. I do have a copy of another one of her books that I‘ll get around to eventually. 2y
Cortg @Cinfhen It‘s a slower read, not much plot, not necessarily loveable characters but it‘ll make you look back and think about life. 2y
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain same here! I need to prioritize her titles I haven‘t read. 2y

This is the character study of a marriage. It spans decades, an aspect which was done very well, and while not plot driven, it still kept me on my toes with surprises along the way!

I felt invested in this marriage and family, and had strong opinions on some of the characters and their actions, which always equals a pick for me! #darguschmarkupfamilybookclub

Crazeedi This sounds really good. And I've liked the other Tyler books I've read 4y

Going to make sure to start the morning off right as we finish out our last few days in quarantine.

This is my pick for the new edition of #darguschfamilymarkupbookclub. I‘m loving it—Tyler really captures the nuances of marriage. Hope my family agrees!

Cinfhen Yay! So happy your family markup bookclub is still going on 💜🙌🏻 4y
Reviewsbylola Our most recent segment took almost two years but it‘s still chugging along. 😂 @Cinfhen I think The Liar almost killed most of us. (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Oh , that book was PAINFUL 😖 SO BAD 4y

Regret, disappointment, anger, misunderstandings and the usual brilliant Anne Tyler characterisation; big issues here but written in such a way it washes over you in a comforting rather than distressing way. There was so much more going on here than you initially think. I‘m appreciating Anne Tyler more with every book. And the last line... 😢

Cathythoughts Nice review! You enjoyed this one 👍🏻😁 4y
JillR @cathythoughts I did, Anne Tyler has not let me down this year! 4y

It's my reading group tomorrow and as well as my suggestion of Plainsong we are reading the above and i really enjoyed it. A story of a marriage over 60years and a couple unsuited in many ways.

An insightful exploration of family relationships, starting in the 1940s with a marriage between two people unsuited to each other. Chapters jump gradually forward in time, right up to the 21st century, giving an enjoyably epic sense to the drama, rather than getting mired in domestic troubles. Reminded me of Ann Patchett's Commonwealth and also Alice Munro's stories in Runaway. Audiobook narrated by Blair Brown is excellent.

BookBabe 😃 Oh, this sounds like a must for me! 👍🏻 8y
Lindy @BookBabe Yes, add it to your list. 😊 8y
