My Name is Lucy Barton | Elizabeth Strout

I‘ve read Olive Ketteridge and I‘ve been looking forward to meeting Lucy Barton! I enjoyed Lucy‘s life and the way Strout chose to tell her story. It‘s a sad story but I really enjoy her characters, relationship dynamics and storytelling. #Pop23 ~a book you bought from an independent bookstore #ReadHarder23 ~read one of your favorite author‘s favorite books (Taylor Jenkins Reid)

BarbaraBB I loved this one and all the ones following it! 11mo
Cortg @BarbaraBB I‘ll have to make my way through the series! Thanks! 11mo

I liked the overall story of Wendy, a 30 year old trans woman and the insight into her life in Winnipeg. Her trans friends, work (both sex work and at a store,) her dad and the mystery of her grandfather. It was sad but also hopeful. However reading about the amount of alcohol consumption almost made me nauseous and the sex was a bit much for my taste. All the triggers! #ReadHarder23 ~read a book about a trans character written by a trans author.

American Heritage month! Though I could see where the story was going, I found myself looking forward to extra long walks and a lot of cleaning just to listen to Daunis‘s story of her life as part Ojibwe and what happens when an investigation is launched into a meth ring amongst her community. I put a physical copy in my Little Free Library and I really home someone takes it home to read ❤️ #ReadHarder23 ~read a YA book by an Indigenous author

5feet.of.fury I loved this book, loved Daunis. I just started Boulley‘s newest today but only got in a few pages 12mo
Cortg @5feet.of.fury I‘m looking forward to reading her new one after the new year! 12mo

The Argonauts | Maggie Nelson

This is a raw memoir about love, family and gender. I really like what Nelson had to say and the experiences she shared. Parts of it were like being in her head. She would be sharing one story, and another would pop up and she‘d veer course and come back around with the original thought. Overall it was pretty good. #Pop23 ~a book with just text on the cover #ReadHarder23 ~a nonfiction book about queer history #Booked23 ~about reproductive rights

Larkken I loved this book. Glad it resonated with you too. 12mo

A friend from bookclub has been wanting me to read this for a while now. It‘s a great middle grades graphic novel to highlight deafness or really any disability. It touches a lot on feelings and being different from your peers. #ReadHarder23 ~a graphic novel that represents disabilities

I‘m not usually a fan of short stories. They always seem to leave me feeling unfulfilled and wanting more. These short stories were different. Twenty-one stories from authors of color; many different backgrounds, cultures and nationalities, all sharing a story about their time living in the America‘s southern states. Just a little snippet, enough to make you think but not necessarily needing more.

Cortg #Readharder23 read a book of short stories
#Pop23 a book that fulfills your favorite prompt from a past challenge/a book with at least a four-star rating on Goodreads
#Booked2023 a short story collection

#ReadHarder23 ~a challenge from the previous years challenge “Best_Writing of the year *Stonewall Book Award, Asian/Pacific American award, National Book Award
I really enjoyed this story. It was slow at the beginning but I loved the 50‘s era, LGBTQ+ and Chinese American history, San Fran ❤️

squirrelbrain Great review - I keep meaning to read this, but somehow just never get round to it. 🤷‍♀️ 1y
BarbaraBB Beautiful view too 😍 1y
Cortg @BarbaraBB Thanks! I was fortunate enough to finish the book at the author‘s alma mater. It‘s a gorgeous campus ❤️ 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm going to read this with the Sunday Buddy Read folks next month. I, too, planned to read it last year but kept delaying. 1y

Just as wonderful as I remembered. Witty and whimsical, the perfect read for an afternoon curled up on the sofa, feeling rotten with bronchitis! Cheered me up no end. So lovely on friendship and the joys of nature… the riverbank seems a pretty idyllic place to be.

Soubhiville Hope you feel better soon. 2y

I thought I‘d read this for the #readharder23 prompt “read a cookbook” - but it is so much more than that! Twisty traces food origins as a way to investigate his own background as an AfAm, and shows just how complicated both are. (+ Really great discussion of the place of genetic genealogy for those looking at “where they came from”)

*photo has nothing to do with the wonderful food mentioned in book, is only food pic on phone 😅

Marriage and family. It‘s not always easy. You have to work at it, compromise, and sometimes you find you are just not happy enough to stick it out in the long run. The characters also have many regrets in life, but life is about choices, growing, and learning along the way. Read this for a work program, senior center book club. #ReadHarder23 ~Read an author local to you #Pop23 ~A book about divorce

Cinfhen Sounds great!! Im going through a family drama phase right now - loving books about messy families and marriages spanning decades 😜💜 2y
squirrelbrain I love Anne Tyler, but haven‘t read this one. Great review! 2y
Cortg @squirrelbrain I‘ve only read one other book by her. I do have a copy of another one of her books that I‘ll get around to eventually. 2y
Cortg @Cinfhen It‘s a slower read, not much plot, not necessarily loveable characters but it‘ll make you look back and think about life. 2y
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain same here! I need to prioritize her titles I haven‘t read. 2y
