I really enjoyed this Deborah is perhaps one of the most annoying characters Iv ever read and a terrible mother ! Why do some women bother?I just don‘t know Anyway excellent short read but the ending !Would have been a 5star for me if it hadn‘t been such an abrupt ending not giving us any clue about the return of her husband and whether she jacked in her marriage and her child to Stay and party in London.Still highly recommend.Good old persephone

This 1946 novels turns the idea of the loyal war wife on its head. Deborah sleeps with man after man while her husband is off at war and her toddler is in the countryside with a nanny. #persephone
One of my new Persephone books - my husband got me a 6 month subscription for Christmas! #persephone
I have finally made the pilgrimage (and reined in my purchases to 3 books as I have soooo many other bookshops to hit and such a small suitcase 😆😆).

I‘m going to be recommending this book for a long time. Deborah is a dreadful, terrible person, but it‘s so fun reading about her!
“But Deborah resisted all of Madeleine‘s suggestions for companionable evenings; if I once give in, she told herself, I‘m done for, certain in her own mind that even a sherry party or a game of bridge could have only one conclusion. She martyred herself till her very martyrdom became her excuse for her release.”
Tonight‘s train home book: To Bed With Grand Music. This copy came from a friend - I should really check if she wants it back once I‘m done!
Can't wait to dive into my Persephone book haul. If you have never read one of their books you are doing yourself a disservice. One of my favorite stores in London and they ship to the us! 🇬🇧🇺🇸📚
#FunFridayPhoto - Luckily, the book I'm currently reading is sitting right beside me. I guess the aliens will get to watch me read about a young woman who sleeps her way around WW2 London. 🙄👾

#MarchIntoReading Day 1 - March #TBR
After failing spectacularly at keeping with February's TBR, I'm giving it another go in March.

Laski's tale of a soldier's wife getting caught up in the whirlwind of glamour and extramarital romance in wartime London reads like Fitzgerald, but with the added bonus of having been written by a woman and therefore approaching everything from the underrepresented female perspective. Laski's writing is perceptive, uncompromising, and caustically funny. You may not like anyone in this book, but you will find them all utterly convincing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My first buy from Persephone Books and I am enjoying it so much! #bookstagram #womenwriters #persephonebooks
Can finally cross Persephone Books off the London bucket list!
