"In Nottingham, England, widow Emma Taylor finds herself in desperate need of a job to provide for herself and her beloved daughter, Olivia. But with the legal restrictions prohibiting widows with children from most employment opportunities, she's left with only one option: persuading the manageress at Boots' Booklover's Library to take a chance on her. When the threat of war becomes a reality, Olivia must be evacuated to the countryside. In her daughter's absence, Emma seeks solace in the unlikely friendships she forms with her neighbours and co-workers, as well as the recommendations she provides to the library's quirky regulars. But the job doesn't come without its difficulties. Books are mysteriously mis-shelved and disappearing, and her work forces her to confront the memories of her late father and the bookstore they once owned together before a terrible accident. As the Blitz intensifies in Nottingham and Emma fights to reunite with her daughter, she must learn to depend on her community and the power of literature more than ever to find hope in the darkest of times."--Provided by publisher.

This section resonated with me! As much as I enjoy the convenience of digital and audiobooks, nothing can replace the joy I feel when walking into a bookstore or library!

I love books about bookshops…and this has become one of my favorites. I‘d never heard of Boots Booklover‘s circulating library situated in the Chemist‘s shop, so it was a revelation to me and a good excuse to head down a rabbithole! ⬇️

Bluebird A woman must conceal her status as a widowed mother in order to obtain a job due to laws of the time. She finds support, friendship and camaraderie amongst her neighbors and coworkers. I hesitated to read a book set during WWII as I am trying to read more positive and/or escapist type books at the moment. However, the book did not disappoint. It‘s about love, friendship and the healing power of books. Highly recommend to booklovers everywhere. 😀 3w

A heartwarming story about a mother and daughter in wartime England and the power of the books that bring them together. Emma Taylor needs to find a job to support herself and her daughter. She is a single mom and there is a war going on and Germany is bombing England. She signs up to send her daughter, Olivia, to the countryside to escape the bombs.

EadieB Books are mysteriously mis-shelved and disappearing, and her work forces her to confront the memories of her late father and the bookstore they once owned together before a terrible accident. I loved this story. There are many books mentioned throughout the book. Books that people are reading in order to not think about the bombs being shelled all over England. 2mo

I participated in The Back Room author event hosted by Hank Phillipe Ryan and Karen Dionne for the first time. It was a lot of fun seeing authors Madeline Martin, Rose Carlyle, Mansi Shah, and and Marybeth Mayhew Whalen discuss their latest books and interact with participants. I wrote about my experience on my blog. 💕

BE SURE IT IS IN YOUR TBR.

Takes us to London during WWII when married or widowed women were not allowed to work, when children were whisked out of London to keep them safe from the bombings, and to wonderful research done by Ms. Martin.

A can‘t-put-down one and another GEM by Ms. Martin that will have you shedding happy tears along with the sad ones. 5/5

Madeline Martin has done it again with “The Booklovers‘ Library” —a moving story that blends the magic of books with the struggles of wartime England. This book had me hooked from the very beginning, following the journey of Emma, a widow in Nottingham, as she navigates the difficulties of finding work, sending her daughter to safety, and discovering the power of community in the darkest of times. LOVED IT!

I am a sucker for books about books, libraries & bookstores so this one seemed like something I would enjoy. And I did, but will say this was not a very memorable reading experience. It‘s a perfectly lovely book about mothers & daughters, unlikely friendships, & the power of literature to help you through horrific times. But I think I‘m over the current trend of books about books, libraries, bookstores, and spunky heroines making it through WWII.

A woman gets a job at a lending library in Nottingham right as the war is beginning. There are a lot of books in this general trope and I think this one is worth reading.

You will wish you could go to Boot‘s Booklover‘s Library and talk with the people who work there and experience the warmth of the people and the organization of the library. P5/5
