One of my favorite movies, too. 💚

I'm late posting, but I did finish June's book in my personal 2022 Modern Library Challenge. A mixed reaction from me, as the writing style was “British-formal“ and seemed pretty dated. And it's basically a Romance which isn't my typical genre. But I did enjoy it.

I was surprised how well Forester handled the sex - he is franker than I expected while still maintaining his 1930s respectability.

I have a lot of conflicting feelings about this #bookspin choice. I picked it because it's by my dad's favorite author and I liked the movie growing up.

Even though it's an exciting adventure story, any real enjoyment I might have taken out of reading it was overwhelmed by it's racist language and attitudes. I don't think I'll be revisiting this one in the future, but I'm glad it's off my TBR :)

Meh. Took me a lot longer to get through this because I kept getting pulled out of the story. The characterization of Rose was so jarring- definitely written by a man in the 1930s! I wish there was more description of the surroundings because there was so so much potential. Also, the ending was just.. huh? It wasn't awful, but I found myself not really caring about the plot or the characters

Hoping to get this one done this week before classes start again! 🎒

1. I was named after Debbie Reynolds Tammy movies. I wished my name was Josephine from Little Women.

2. My daughter Chaya was named from a historical fiction about ancient Jerusalem. Her middle name came from two literary figures - Rose Wilder Lane and Rose from The African Queen.

I loved the movie and decided to read the book. Well...I see why some things were changed for the screen. That said, even with the different ending, a few uses of the n-word, and the revelation of Allnut‘s marital status, it was an engaging read. If you like a happy ever after ending with no ambiguity then the movie is for you. Took me two days to whip through and it held my attention all the way through. Different from the movie, but still good.

After hearing great things about the movie, I've been wanting to read this before watching it and although I haven't seen it yet I do supsect that this may be a rare case in which the movie is better. The story had the potential to be good but really fell flat for me. This takes place on the Ulanga River in Tanzania and there were hardly any descriptions of the landscape, scenery or wildlife, ect. Also not a fan of the ending 😒

I don't get many Saturdays off so today is a treat to be home reading and drinking coffee! 😍 (decaf). Had to take a break from 1984. Has anyone read this one before?

Day 21 of #riotgrams - #coolspines! These might not be the fanciest spines, but I think they're the most interesting set in my library. Barnes and Noble Modern Classics, which had a short-lived run in the late 90s/early 00s. This set introduced me to John Fowles, Lillian Hellman, Eudora Welty, Evelyn Waugh, and Flannery O'Connor. 💗📚
