The Native Heath | Elizabeth Fair

Pickpick

It surprised me how a story about interfering and gossipy people in a village could be so enjoyable and even page-turning at times. This was good escapist entertainment and I'm definitely interested in reading more by Elizabeth Fair.

Ruthiella I also now want to read more from E. Fair on the strength of this title! 😃 4mo
Librarybelle Escapist entertainment…stacking! 4mo
julieclair This was my first Elizabeth Fair, although another of her books has been on my TBR for quite awhile. Now I‘m motivated to move it closer to the top of that loooong list. 3mo
kwmg40 @julieclair I'll have to keep A Winter Away in mind. It seems like a good one to save for when the snowy season returns! 3mo

The Radiance of the King | Laye Camara, James Kirkup

#NYRBBookClub

Clarence has been shipwrecked in Africa, lost all his money gambling, and is about to get kicked out of the dirty inn where he stays. So he needs to meet the king, who will surely give him, a white man, an important job. Instead of the king he meets a beggar and a pair of teenage rascals. They help him stay out of trouble and accompany him to the south where the king will probably show up again. ⬇️⬇️

BarbaraBB What seems a story of Clarence's often Kafkaesque adventures, is in the end more a book about the nature of perception and openness to experience: Clarence is simply incapable of experiencing or understanding West Africa. 2y
BarbaraBB Because Camara Laye is from #Guinea I guess that the book is set there. #ReadingAfrica2022 🇬🇳 @Librarybelle #192025 #1954 (edited) 2y

Another great installment in this trilogy...our Fellowship may be split, they are all in some dark places, and could all use a helping hand.

On to book 3! (Tomorrow....)

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I should have added #192019 #1954 😉 (edited) 7y
tournevis Though may I say about the cover: OMG hair!!!!! 7y
8leagueboot Definitely look up the Hobbit in this printing. That's the one we had in our house and it took me forever to read it because I was so alarmed by the cover. Gollum seemed so much less frightening in the movies after that cover! 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @8leagueboot I have that one too! This is the set I bought in HS, and it's the anniversary set. Ugly covers all the way! 😱😂 What were they thinking!?! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tournevis Yes...Legolas aka Fabio! 7y
Chrys Oh dear I remember these, some covers just shouldn't be 7y

I great adventure in great company... but as we all know, all good things must come to an end and the fellowship that carried us far must now go its separate ways. What will book 2 hold in store for our weary travelers?

I've really enjoyed reading this book a chapter a day with a group. So nice to discuss with others as we go along with our own fellowship of readers. Thanks setting this up @freyaheart and #LOTRChapterADay

Daisey I agree! I knew I would love rereading these stories, but I'm appreciating the chapter a day aspect so much more than I expected. 7y
Jinjer Totally agree! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey Same here! I was really hesitant, afraid I'd lose the motivation by slowing down, or that it would interfere with the urge to read ahead when the story was hopping. But it actually worked out really well, if it was slow I could easily convince myself to read 1 chapter, and if it was moving I knew I'd get to the next chapter with everyone else so I didn't read ahead. It actually turned out to be a much better motivator than I thought. 👍 7y

JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey l'm really loving reading the book a chapter a day too. I think l'm absorbing thd story in a more meaningful way. Without the urge to read on. And l live sharing with the group. I've read The Lord of the Rings before, but this time is special 😊 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sorry @Leniverse When you said the 1st one, I thought you meant the Hobbit. This is the picture on my Fellowship, just with a black background/border. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Leniverse It's not as bad as the others...except Gandalf is white already, and is that supposed to be Sam eavesdropping? 7y
Leniverse Yeah, that's pretty bad. But not as awful as the others. 7y
