julesG I really enjoyed Vetinari in this one, this time around. And I don't really know why. 2d
willaful Well that's new. I don't think Pratchett has ever made me cry before. (Except his biography.) 2d

julesG @willaful It's happened to me too. This one and Shepherd's Crown 😭 2d
willaful I can't remember if I read this one before, which makes me think I must not have, though it might not have made such a strong impression when I was younger. I think this is one of his best books.

I loved the symbolism of the case. Vimes is so resistant to the trappings that came with marriage to Sybil that it was good to see one he truly loved, that represents how much she cares for him, and becomes a lifeline.

willaful And I loved his recognition and acceptance of the fact that it's time to let himself be more than a copper. He has to be a husband and father too. 1d

willaful I enjoyed seeing more about the relationships here, which had previously seemed a little one-sided. 1mo

julesG @willaful I agree. It was more balanced 1mo
willaful I'm curious about what the revisions were. I'm not sure if the edition I read was revised or not 1mo
julesG @willaful Erm?! ??? I only picked the "revised edition" entry from the database. But now I need to find out too. 1mo
BarbaraJean @willaful Yes! I really liked getting to know Sybil (and her past) better, and Angua's family was... illuminating (yikes). That scene where Sybil breaks into song is 💯 1mo
kwmg40 I enjoyed this one, mainly because of the characters that had larger roles in this book -- Angua, Sybil and the wonderful Gaspode! 4w

kwmg40 This story felt pretty dark for a Discworld novel, even if it did contain some very funny scenes. Two aspects that I liked very much: the continuing character development of Vimes and the hilarious and intriguing Dis-organiser. 2mo

julesG @kwmg40 The Dis-Organiser was hilarious indeed. 2mo
julesG Yes, the novel was darker than what we've seen so far, but it can't all be sunshine and rainbows. Not even on Discworld. I think Pratchett used the Watch novels deliberately to show the darker side of life. 2mo
willaful I think this was one of his more ambitious books and it's not entirely successful. But it's full of fantastic gut-punch scenes, as well as laughs. 2mo
julesG @willaful There's a lot packed into the story. This time round I noticed a lot of small things connected to history (wars, border disputes, fishing rights squabbles,...) that I didn't notice upon my first read or didn't know about back then, which make more sense to me and made the novel feel less 'unsuccessfully ambitious'. 2mo
