Pickpick

Cut your hair. Put on trousers. Pack your bag. And don't forget to pack an extra pair of socks.

kwmg40 After working through the Rincewind books, many of which were heavily dominated by male characters, it was refreshing to see a more diverse and interesting cast. I especially liked Igorina and Jackrum. I also liked how Pratchett poked fun at the conventions of warfare and at the propaganda that tends to surround wars. 2w
BookmarkTavern I think Maladict and Polly were my favorites. I‘ve always related to Polly a lot, being the caretaker so long it becomes habit. And I found myself paying a lot more attention to the politics and religious fanaticism of Borogovia. It feels a lot more relevant right now. 😅 2w

julesG @BookmarkTavern it does feel very relevant right now. 2w
julesG Polly is my favourite, but Maladict and Igor sure are second. And Jackrum, of course. 2w
BookmarkTavern @julesG I really didn‘t like Jackrum the first time through. I thought they were abrasive and a bully. But, on reread, knowing what we know about the character, I appreciated them a lot more. (edited) 2w

willaful @julesG OUCH! 1mo
TheSpineView There was a lot going on in this book. Loved the various ideas that Pratchett presented in the book. My favorite was the role of media as it pertains to the government. 1mo
julesG @TheSpineView I was astonished at how well the book has aged. 1mo
TheSpineView @julesG It did age well. I think some things will be timeless. 1mo
kwmg40 I really enjoyed this one. Coincidentally, I was reading The Golden Road by L.M. Montgomery for #kindredspiritsbuddyread and in it, the main characters start a newspaper, so it was fun to compare! As others have mentioned, the themes of the book are still very relevant today. 1mo
BookmarkTavern It‘s a little alarming how well it‘s aged! Journalism and what it owes to the people, versus how to work with the government and law enforcement, it‘s a narrow line to walk. Vimes and William‘s banter remains probably my favorite part of this book. And that final confrontation with William‘s dad! I forgot just how much that moved me. (edited) 1mo
julesG @BookmarkTavern Your review reminded me, I loved Otto and the antics about him turning to dust so often, but not giving up his profession. 1mo
willaful @BookmarkTavern Truly. I don't think anything going on now would surprise Pratchett, if he were still with us.

I think this is the best of the reads so far.
