Usually, books that languish on my shelves end up with a big 👎👎 from me when I do finally read it. I‘m glad this little gem bucked the trend! Published in 1989, I overlooked the fact that this was not an Own Voices book, because it was clear the author did her research and spent time in the culture she was writing about. I loved Shabanu, and esp her relationship with her family‘s 🐫 🐫🐫.

I know not how to capture in words the beauty of this charming novel. I love the evocative descriptions and most of all, Cassandra‘s voice, which is honest, and funny. I love reading her ponderings as she records everything in her journal. And what an array of quirky characters the household is. I wish I‘ve read this as an adolescent, and I can see why it has an enduring appeal.
Based on the title alone, I would not normally chose this to read. However, after many 👍 from littens I love, I decided to shelve my judgement and take a listen. And guess what...it‘s so much more than the title lets on and seems an important and timely read.

Saturday Surprises! #happymail from my dear friend and #penpal - @BekahPat 🤗 I love your “Disclaimer” on the cover and agree: this cover art does not match the synopsis. I‘m excited to dive into this soon. Thank you so much! #neverjudgeabookbyitscover P.S. - love your TX stickers!
Fact! I'm so loving this book! It's funny, insightful, poignant, current yet timeless... It's embarrassing, but I totally passed on this until now because I didn't like the cover, and at a glance it didn't sound like my thing. 🤦🏻♀️ #neverjudgeabookbyitscover
I'm always a little sad to see a book without its dust jacket. So when I open an unassuming hardback and find lovely front pieces like this I'm reminded to never judge a book by its cover. The Book is called Beloved Bondage by Elizabeth Yates. I couldn't find it on Litsy so I used a different one by her.😘 #bookstagram #vintagebooks #moon #neverjudgeabookbyitscover #peteandfreddys #elizabethyates
